amazing new shoulder rig

Titan Prototype in The Field

Titan Prototype in The Field

Hi Titan Fans,

I just wanted to share with you my recent experience with the Titan rig. I have been fortunate enough to have been working with Anders, Kostas and Fredrik at AeonCine on the late prototype stage of the Titan, specifically, using the rig on shoots and providing feedback.

**Note: I am not being compensated, nor am I affiliated with their company.

I am currently working with a unit and I can say without hesitation it is fantastic! The design and functionality are simply the best I've seen. Any changes I've suggested are ones that have already been addressed by others here on Reduser so I won't go into every detail, but I will say that any issue with respect to functionality or any design wish I've presented has been promptly addressed by Kostas. In most cases he was already aware of those issues and had already begun redesign work.

There are many great features to the Titan but my most-liked are the following:

1. The top plate. I love the articulating handle! I am consistently changing it's position forwards and backwards. This takes all of two seconds. Great feature.

2. The arms. They are light, strong and just right. If you have really long arms like me you can get both your own arms and the Titan's out in front in a comfortable position. If your arms are shorter you can adjust the rig into a more compact setup. They work. Period.

3. The base plate. Light, compact and so easy to adjust. The clamp down levers for rods are smart and easy to use and adjust tension as needed. The quick release for the arms unit is genius.

4.The battery plate. Any which way but loose. I know I borrowed that from Clint Eastwood but its true. The battery plate and arm can be configured to suit your personal stye for optimum balance and functionality. You want it vertical, then set it that way. Horizontal, sure set it that way. Arm it up or down as you wish.

I'm really looking forward to the final iteration of the Titan. A tremendous amount of thought and planning has gone into making a modular package that offers solutions we all face when shooting. I've opted for the complete rig but the great thing about this design is you can add components as needed and as budget allows. I've got a piecemeal package of accessories that I put together for my Epic and all I can say is these guys (the braintrust at AeonCine) are about to kick some butt with the release of the Titan.

If you've been on the sidelines waiting for the Titan I can say without hesitation it will be worth the wait.

Glenn

Did you get the unit for free? Var den gratis til Glen. The price, the price... Even by Danish standards too high. Disclaimer... I am from Denmark, we are known for design etc, I don't like the price point and this is just my opionion.

Paul hello I suggest you wait until next week to see whats coming up on the website.
I also suggest you have a more carefull look of what is included in the packages suggested, then just do a side to side comparisson with already available rigs. I can also help you do this if you are in any way confussed since the website is a little confussing at the moment, but I belive next week it will all be clear.
However there will be another starting rig that can stand side by side components and under 3k.
It would be better if you could write me and I can see your needs and suggest a package to you rather than keep repeating that the price is too high , simply because for what its offered its actually very good and even cheaper than the higher end. rigs manufacturers.
if you want an even better example mail me and I can be very specific.
Thanks again for your interest.

BTW Glenn is paying in full for his unit and the proto version will be replaced with a brand new production unit at the end of June - start of July.
We will have an official announcment very soon about preorders and production.

He's actually our first customer and have paid for the rig :). Of course with the agreement that he will be upgraded to full production unit when production is running.

Thank you for a very nice review and we're happy it's working out for you. We're working hard on the improvements that has been addressed and will continue to come with new innovative design that will hopefully change a lot of ways of working.

As for the price - this is not a handheld rig - this is full on camera equipment - so the price is not expensive. It's simply that certain things have been made in our design to make it work more efficiently for the end user and you can not get away with the fact that other equipment then doesn't cut the chase in being clever. Our complete version is a quick release platform
, a handheld rig and a quick release adjustable battery plate - take all this things in account and you see that the price tag is very competitive.

And as Kostas is saying - we are also to announce a rig that has most functions but is under $3000

I apologise for typos as this was written on the iohone

Do what you will. I think your stuff is beautiful. I know R&D is expensive but what made RED unique was coming in, and continuing to do so, at a price point that is not cheap but not 3K plus. My two cents, beautiful rigs, our of my league for what it is. Retooling of the companies infrastructure somehow should be able to shave the fat off this price... It's a small company from what I gather... Everything from Denmark should not have to be that bloody expensive unless you used George Jensen silver to make the units.

Paul as a designer and engineer of the Titan, I can go one step beyond what you say, and explain to you very analytically, because I really think you still dont understand what is included.
I can also tell you a lot of other usefull for your knowledge things and info about how this is made and with what quality in materials, and then you can come back and think about this.
Even if this is out of your range as you say, I would be very happy to do this for you because Iam a very objective person and never talk in general and I would like to be as precise as possible before I come into a conclussion.
Thank you for liking the design and for your kind words.I am always available for any questions and requests.

Paul,

As kostas is saying there's a lot going into this. To create something that is unique requires that it is different thinking than other design. Therefor this is not a handheld solution and all the different aspects of camera accessories are designed to work together effortlessly. I'm sorry if you, for example, have certain equipment already and is only looking for a handheld shoulder pad rig to add to your already existing gear - then this rig is not for you - BUT we are working on making parts of our design functional with already existing gear for those who would want it - just know that certain design functions will not be there, simply because most camera equipment design has not been thinking out of the box and is therefor from a design perspective not possible to adjust into the compact, ultralight and quick release design that we are doing - in saying so - you will still be a lot better of than with other manufacturers.

Actually I think the best way of ending the price discussion is by me saying I just did a calculation for what a very often mentioned 3d party camera manufacturer in this thread would cost to buy the equipment needed to be "comparable" to what our complete solution offers. I came to just under $2500 in parts - that doesn't really compare as the design doesn't even come close to offer same possibilities and it will not deliver same high end engineering as we will do. I'm not saying that their equipment is bad on the contrary it is very good - I'm just saying that for $500 more you get A LOT MORE and maybeim wrong - but I don't see that as being expensive? I actually see it as being extremely competitive

I will wait and see what you come up with. Looking forward.

And to top that , a side to side comparisson Titan with the above estimate will be offered just under 3k which is around 2k cheaper.
And you get a well balanced rig with extra usefull features. And not a front heavy mount. One that you can mount directly on Arri plates, and not have to have an extra QR-base or extra non compatible arri plate.
New announcments coming next week and the updated webstore. You will then understand what is being offered and at a very competitive price.
Anyone interested on whats included pl;ease mail me at kt@aeoncine.com or Anders at ad@aeoncine.com.

thank you

Red's Clutch is $4.900 if I'm not mistaken. That's not exactly cheap neither...

A BT Clutch is $3k! A Clutch sold for $2500 immaculate condition 3 days ago. Thats pretty reasonable knowing Red's got your back.

Adnan you are not being very accurate you are about 250 usd wrong , and at the same time you are talking about second hand equipment.
In both cases. So please try and be objective. We are talking about new equipment here.
THANKS

It's regrettable that you seem to have taken offence but its just my opinion and I'm very sure people are smart enough to know BT is 2nd hand and the price is ballpark. To suggest that I should be 'more accurate' in my posts is your opinion and you have the freedom to express it. And I have the freedom to reject it.

I worked 10 years in sales and the one principle that applies all over is the customer will pay extra for the same product to the company that has better customer service. Hence, the saying goes, "The Customer is always right." or "Never argue with the customer." etc. etc.

Word of mouth is a powerful marketing tool that can make or break a product.

I was mainly refering to the innaccurate price you have mentioned since BT is 3250 usd and not 3k . Iam not offended at all, I was just making my remark because it was indeed innaccurate.
No offence at all, or anything else .
thanks

Glenn thanks for your revew on the Titan proto and Iam looking fwd to some pictures from you and the Titan in the battle.

Im happy to hear that you guys didnt go the fast route, and release the Titan without giving the prototypes a real testing and listening to all the feedback from people at NAB! Do you care to show what improvements you've done compared to the original design? You said that the shoulder plate was being redesigned among other things?

I see the Titan like a long time investment, much like the red camera. After buying all the Red One gear, only to find very little fitted the Epic, I find myself reluctant to buy more accessories from Red right now. I want something that I can use on another camera if need be. Who knows, my next camera might be a Canon, not likely but who knows? It seems like the Titan is a kit, made to be adopted, and re-used with just a small amount of new parts... So I will follow this closely! I find the EVF/LCD mount very nice, and will die to try them out....

Hello. The Titan can already be used with many cameras, and not only small sized cameras including the RED ONE
So it doesnt matter what camera you want to work with the Titan will work with it.
In some cases all it takes is a riser plate.
I also have a new idea that Iam testing that eliminates the riser plates all together.
The reason why the Titan works with all is mainly because you can have the camera balanced dead center on your shoulder and then you can use it with large heavy cameras like sonys or Red one, OR, you can configure it to work with dslrs as a front heavy rig, or even configure it to work with them center nbalanced. It should really be called TRANSFORMER instead of Titan, hahahaha but ...
Of cource having the Arri compatability to go on sticks is another feature that makes life easier, and not only easier but at the same time have A CORRECT CAMERA PACKAGE that can be used CORRECTLY on a tripod head, and NOT a monster rig with handles and other stuff hanging down on the front or back while you have the camera on tripod.
here is the most importand points on the production rigs
Better ergonomic shoulder shape pad , wider and at the same time increase of angle adjustment to 20 degrees
Better levers that can be more accessible and easier to lock unlock
Improvement of the cam locks design
Addition of a back dovertail ARRI compatable back bracket that will lock your arri plates with a twist of a lever , adding to the cam lever Grip.
Addition accessories, like extension offset for the left hand side ( probably come as standard)
Additional monitor mount that can be mount on this extension part above have a very unique and fully adjustable viewing of your lcd directly in front of you and in the CORRECT possition.
redesigned telescopic arms for the top plate evf and monitor brackets and rails
adapter to 15mm rods bracket
Studio lightweight brackets that can come as a choice instead of 19 mm , or can be bought separatly and replaced when needed .
redesigned rosettes
thats a few....from the list, I hope Iam not confussing you, but you will be able to see it all very soon.
We will have everything online next week.
thank you all for your interest

It seems a bit unfair to compare second hand equipment to new equipment...
Now, both are very expensive and both seem to be high quality. I just don't think Red's accessories are cheaper here, if you compare what's in each kit.
