  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

All the Epic/Dragon Vs. Alexa/Sony threads are belong to us...

It's nearly that... I think the mid tones are a bit "brighter" in the new OLPF decode, so yes we see some more noise but I wonder if it's due to a different response to how the low light are decoded. Crushing a bit the low lights would give you probably the same results. Again... I'll wait for the DragonColor to give my jugment. ;-)

I agree about not judging too much till Dragoncolor, but you have to kind of judge given were shooting on these camera now.

Hmm,
To me it does not matter much. Things can allways be better ofcourse. But even with the current color science and the "old olpf" (yes its odd that tech now go old before you can even buy it) the dragon kicks ass... I need no charts to see it, the 6k frames delivered blows everything I ever seen in terms of motion imagery. So to me things are nothing but good, as good as, better than anything else and big posibility to get even better. So dragon will last quite a while i think, or atleast until nab when red probably show the next step up. :)

i think nobody from red ever mentioned a Dragoncolor soon to be released ... or even in the works

Jarred has mentioned Dragoncolor was in the works multiple times. There was never a timeline mentioned.

Agreed. Almost seems like these latest "calibrations" and "firmware" updates are themselves part of the new "Dragoncolor". Curious if there will be a RC4/RG4 to replace RC3/RG3...or perhaps they'll call it DC1/DG1 (Dragon Color 1, Dragon Gamma 1)...haha.

certainly, Bjork and PAt ,
it was just to share some frame ...
Even for me, the graphics are not worth much, once you've seen the image of DRagon is simply fantastic and rich.
However, wait until everything is ready before you judge ...
I'm sure we expect a lot of news ....

Anything you gain in the highlights was always going to come at the expense of the other end.

I'm torn on this. Not sure if it would be nicer to have lower noise in the bottom or 1 highlight stop. the top end is not where the noise problems occur.

If it's between noise and highlight rolloff i think i might take lower noise.

Well, since adding a stop in the top matches the Alexa high end, I feel like we should have a cleaner low end to truly be superior. I feel like it has to be better on both ends personally. I wish they could combine calibrations and use the previous low end calibration combined with the new added upper DR, better color, and lack of IR contamination.

On a clipped highlight the details it cannot be restored . a noisier shadow can be cleaned .

i would take a stop more on highlight over shadow without even thinking about it .

It's not just noise, it's losing a bit of DR in the low end as well.

try 'to do some real picture night or low light, but I am convinced that the difference between the two is minimal and imperceptible, while for the high lights is obvious.
I do not know maybe ADD manages to estrappolare everything and then we would have even more 'dynamic range and less noise.

Were both of your charts (from new and old calibration) shot with the same exposure?

I'm curious about why, and I hope it's not just because the Alexa has it? I'd rather have a half a stop more than the OLD OLPF but retain that clean low end, there is far more picture information to be had down there.
