  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

All the bad news...

Thanks Jim for the update.

Anticipating this delay, the past week I ordered lots of goodies for my Red One including the SSD module, 256 SSD, Red station, etc. to prepare my transition to Epic. Now I am sending the balance for my Epic-X, just to be ready in case we have a miracle and everything change positively in the supply chain. If not, my money will be safe on my Red account waiting for the Epic day.

1. Supply chain issues. This continues to drive us crazy. We have just gotten word of more delays with several key components from Japan for EPIC-X. We are now looking at late July to receive parts and for the production line to ramp up. We can make a lot of cameras… just need some critical parts.

First of all, thanks for the camera and continuing to slog through the issues bringing it to market. I've never been this excited about a camera.

Second, can you let us know how the "packages" are coming for Stage 2? I know you're busy getting cameras made; are the rest of the items in the Stage 2 Epic-X package also being manufactured in parallel? Or will there be additional delays for those? Will the whole "kit" arrive at the same time, or will it be a situation where the camera ships in October, and the last component in the kit arrives the following April?

Thanks for the up date...Hope August gets here fast... eheheheheh :)

The disaster in Japan was a horrible a disaster in so many regards, and continues to have a terrible effect on so many industries with the imaging biz being one of the biggest. I sympathize with RED. While its frustrating for consumers that are eagerly waiting for these cameras, there are tools now that can do a lot of things that people interested in RED products are after. Most are comprimized in some way(some in MAJOR ways) but large imager cameras are available for decent prices that can be accessorized to achieve a look that people want. If you have a story to tell, there is no reason to put off doing so. The camera in reality is a small portion of great filmmaking. If your story sucks on a Canon HV20, its going to suck on a RED UberGnarMonstro5000(patent pending). Script, lighting, innovative composition. Sharpen these to a razors edge. Buy a camera. Learn every facet of the camera. Tell your story.

I want Scarlet. Bad. I have been frustrated with RED in the past for failing to meet deadlines for sure, but thats more of a testament to the sheer awesomeness of their forthcoming product than a slam on their failure to achieve product ship dates. Having hoped for the best but feared the worst over the past few months, I just refreshed my shooting package. As much as Sony's (very obvious) practice of hindering their lower tier cameras to protect their higher end stuff aggravates me, I decided to purchase a NEX-FS100 + prores422 recorder which I received yesterday(along with my new27inch iMac :) ) Nice imager and framerates with the ability to use good glass. If I can't produce nice films with this, then I need to hang it up.

We're all here because we love the craft of digital imaging. RED is the first company, in my opinion, that you actually believe is in love with the art of filmmaking and not business posturing. It's for this reason that missed ship dates, or pricing fluctuations don't enrage me like a lot of people out there and make me go to the next message board over and slam RED for what amounts to things beyond their control(mostly ;) )

A company that loves this stuff, making a camera that does a shit-ton of awesome things for a great price? Trust me, when Scarlet gets here, I will be here, and so will everybody else regardless of what they say.

Until then, I am gonna go have some fun with my new toys! Good luck with the supply issues, I hope things work out soon.

All the bad news that I can think of…

1. Supply chain issues. This continues to drive us crazy. We have just gotten word of more delays with several key components from Japan for EPIC-X. We are now looking at late July to receive parts and for the production line to ramp up. We can make a lot of cameras… just need some critical parts.

2. Lens issues with Fixed Scarlet. We have lens production issues that need to be resolved before we can begin production. My bet is September.

3. Features. We continue to enable features in both EPIC and Scarlet… but every feature is not enabled at this point. We are enabling new features every week. Expect us to continue that trend and improve the features of the cameras steadily. EPIC and Scarlet share an unified code base so what gets enabled in EPIC gets enabled in Scarlet.

Engineering cameras that are as complicated and spec-intensive as these is not easy. We have set time targets and missed them. However, we have not missed any spec targets. To the contrary, we have exceeded them. Both EPIC and Scarlet produce images that are much better then we ever anticipated.

We are transparent. For better or for worse. We acknowledge that we are in uncharted territory. We have never done this. Neither has anyone else. While we hope that you can appreciate pushing everything to the Nth degree, we also know you need to make plans. No one wants to finish development and begin shipping more than I do. No one. Truly. But there is a reality that we bump up against. Our commitment to our customers mandates that we tell the bad news right along side the good news. So there you have it.

Now… if you want some good news… EPIC-M continues to go out in measured numbers and the images from these cameras are unparalleled.

There are far fewer people posting about missing EVFs because we are shipping regular amounts each month.

REDmags and R1 SSD Modules are shipping in reasonable quantities.

EPIC continues to be the choice for the highest budget features… because the images this camera makes are legendary. "This is the best looking footage I have ever shot... these are the best images I have ever seen!" John Schwartzman, Cinematographer of "The Amazing Spiderman".

We have just enabled an EPIC anamorphic mode with more pixels than 4.5K as well as 2K at 300fps (an example of beating specs) in the latest EPIC-M firmware build (for free).

Greame's Magic Motion HDRx is soon to be enabled in free REDCINE-X application...

We have a complete assembly line in California ready and waiting… just need parts.

The extra development time has been well spent. What we are fixing now helps every future customer.

I wish we had some traits of the big guys… but I wouldn't trade our program for anyone's.

God love us all…

Jim

good question.

RED have revolutionized digital cinema already.

The effects have been felt even lower down the "food chain". Cottage industry producer/director/one-man-studios like me are reaping the rewards of RED's pressure already. Even though the RED One isn't quite the camera I need right now, the non-RED camera I am shooting with only appeared because of RED's pressure on other industry players.

When RED bring the benefits of large sensor, RAW-like, high-res HDR shooting to a more agile and more affordable package, I'm absolutely sold. No-one else looks even close to doing it, frankly, so the least we can do is be patient :-)

Jim, you and your guys have already indirectly benefitted my shooting a lot. I'm really looking forward to the day I can pay you some cold hard cash for the revolution!

If only everyone would remember (and support you for) this. I hate to see you frustrated because of immature impatience, and personally I think God loves the irrepressible. Well, I do ;-).

Hmm. Bad news?? My first thought was, "Why is Jannard posting dates when he said he wouldn't?" He must know quite a few more production details (on the macro and micro scale) than he did a month or two ago. While I don't expect Jim to post details, it's a good thing that the production/recovery picture in Japan is getting more clear - and not just for RED, but for hundreds of millions of Japanese and their customers.

Thanks for all you do.

sorry guys , what is the most updated thread that explains all the options and prices for Epic-x and scarlet , knowing that stage 2 is closed i am wondering about stage 3 for epic-X and scarlet

thanks

g

While we wait, have you guys come any closer to a price on the EPIC-S package price? Although, i'm sure i'll have enough money by the time they come out, it would be nice to know what i'm shooting for! Anyways, however long it takes, is as long as it takes. There's no way for you guys to control what happens to Japan and such.

Thanks Jim, I've worked with a lot of hungry, passionate entrepreneurs who live, eat, sleep, breath and dream their business 24/7 - and none had this level of vision or fire in their belly to make something so significant. So I can only imagine how much it hurts to be hit this hard by things outside your control.

Appreciate the update and can't wait to get my hands on Epic - whenever it's ready. In the meantime keep up the great work and enjoy those cigars :)

Thanks for the update Jim! I have a trip on July 21 that I REALLY want my EpicX on. Sounds like that might be a bridge too far, but i'm going to keep hoping :-)

its not that hard to wait.
who can say he has the cam social network was shot on right on his desk while waiting for the cam the hobbit shoots on? :)

Hey Jim Thanks for the update- very appreciated! It was very nice to meet you at the RED presentation a few weeks ago, me and my girlfriend were seating front row, very happy to meet you!
I know how it is to feel frustrated, I'm waiting for my EPIC-M to arrive for over a month now... but I understands its hand made and there may be a list of order before me, I have upcoming projects and I don't want to shoot with my DSLR, I refuse to shoot at least the best ones with anything other than my EPIC-M, I hope it gets here soon. Until then I'll try not to be too frustrated :) This update made me feel better. Thanks for being transparent. I love that about RED.

Well Jim, at the Red Day at the Tropicana, you stood across the table from me and told me that I'd have my Epic-X by August.

It sounds like you will deliver right on time.

(There was just a minor misunderstanding, entirely on my side!)

:smile5:

Not long at all!

Not long at all!

Thanks very much for the update. When I think of how quickly June arrived after the FCP X sneak peek in April, September doesn't sound that far away for Scarlet! Yes, there could be additional delays, but each time the estimate slips, it slips by less. So we're getting close! :emote_happyhappy:

Thank you for the update. Even bad news is good for us to hear. It keeps thing in perspective.

thanks Jim, this kind of transparency is greatly appreciated.

Can I ask if Red Ray is affected by supply issues ? We don't hear much about RED RAY anymore, and I find it one of the most exciting innovations on deck.

Can you share anything there without tipping your hat? Thanks in advance.
