Yeah, why when you go to the movies do you have to eat crap food? Popcorn or candy and soda. WTF?

I'm in Ketch, do I have to come the Italy?

What is next?

I tell you Peter... One of the things that is coming next is our soon to be announced Global Movie Theater Chain in full 3D 4K glory bigger then IMAX, that actually will have a MUCH WIDER showing criteria for Stories... And I promise yo that will not only be the Image on this HUGE screen coming form RED LASER Projectors that will please you, but the design, comfort, quality of foods and beverages, and most importantly also the reduced pricing... ;)

RED has been bringing some insane stuff to us, sometimes late some times really late, but this time... PERFECT TIMING... ;)

I have a couple of shelves full of underwater footage from some of the coolest places in the world. Shot on recam, Betacam, D3, digibeta, DV, Etc. - 720x486 - all tops in their day. :-( I was always frustrated that that was the best we could do without spendings tens of thousands on film (even with $60k cameras) yet the still guy could spend $3k on a Nikonos setup and $20 on film and equal the pros.

DSMC has finally given me that capability in a movie camera. At a price I can readily afford.

Many thanks, Jim

Michael, you read my mind. As a primarily underwater stills shooter for the last 15 years, I started shooting Nikonos V, then got into the Subeye (I still have numerous shots on E6 transparency that I love and hold up today) Then, I "graduated" to digital. First Nikon D-100, then 200, then 300, each one getting progressively better than the last, but in many ways still not equaling film (e.g. sun balls) Last year I had the chance to shoot R1-MX in a Gates housing and just fell in love! Now I own an Epic-X and Gates Deep Epic and just returned from Indonesia on Tuesday and drove out to Las Vegas that night for NAB... I have barely had a chance to review all my footage, but I know there is some gold there, and that gold will be good for years to come.

Simply stated, the raw workflow, the dynamic range, including the ability to hold the highlights and not blow out shooting directly into the sun ball, push the ISO (or pulling - even in post), not to mention that I can capture stills from moving images, makes this the best camera system I have ever shot underwater, or topside for that matter.

I'm thinking this will be the last system I'll have to buy for some time. Every time Nikon or Canon comes out with a new body you have to wait until the housing manufactures catch up. The 5D MKIII won't fit in the same housing as the MKII, the D4 is not the same as the D3. With the Epic, or Scarlet, the body stays the same and the guts change. Brilliant design!

Jim, Jarred, you guys have nailed it! I feel the same about RDC as I do about Apple (33 and counting since 1984) - So, when's the IPO? ;-)

I spread the word every time I travel -like I'm doing today coming back from a festival, but also did a camera workshop so I brought along one of my Epics.

I always hand carry so I take it through security and they all start asking questions. I give them the short history of Red and tell them many movies coming to a theater near them is being shot or has been shot with the very same type of camera they're drooling over.

Passengers, pilots, stewardesses & cab drivers all react the same way. With the 18-85 on it and matte box it's a pretty impressive beast.

Sorry... disagree. I guess I have for the past decade.

If you want your stuff to "be good enough" for now, you are right. But do you really want your prized footage to be important in the future? Imagine you have your best work on SD. Or looking forward... 1080P?

Jim

What Fergus is talking about is the "non prized" footage. Lots of corporate stuff we shoot has a very limited shelf life. People shoot realestate videos - only good until the property sells. Products, current announcements, news-type of materials. Tons of footage that's far from prized. Stuff that doesn't need to be ever used again. 1080p is plenty for that. It's also fine for most TV documentaries / magazines, and even regional commercials. Different markets, different needs.

You can shoot SD or HD for many things (like real estate sales). I am talking about content that is destined for all time... like anything important.

When every TV you buy at Walmart, Target, Best Buy, etc... is 1080 or "HD" is it really High Definition anymore? I have started calling 1080 today's standard definition. Last centuries resolution is low-res. 4K is the new High Definition.

One year from now... anything less than 4K at Walmart will not be good enough.

Jim, do you believe 3D will in a reasonable time become the same to 2D what color images have been the last decades to black and white ones?

Yes.

But a lot off things need to change... starting with delivery.

Passive glasses in cinema, I guess. What about 3D in TV?

Should add, personallly I wonder how long at all there will be TV broadcasting as we know it now. Once it goes to internet, then the common habit of viewing simultaneously what is broadcasted may quickly change.

4K good for all time? It's good to know some things will never change :)
Get some sleep, maybe?

I couldn't agree more with you Jim, 4K is just PERFECT!!

Lets look towards such a near future were this things are indeed changed and that 3D 4K (per each eye) are presented in their full glory... ;)

Yes of course you have to come to Italy, any one should come visit my beautiful Country... ;)

But no, this New Era 3D 4K Movie theater chain, is a "GLOBAL CHAIN" and will open with 100 theater in main cities across the globe... It is going to be HUGE, and it is what is needed the most, if we bring a spike and a push change to Distribution the way that Jim and RED have and are bringing it to Acquisition, and soon Delivery, meaning REDRAY and RED LASER Projectors then every one is in for a good time to come in Movie Going History... ;)

Can't wait to have the site up with all the info, drawings, presentations, and what we really are up to.

I love CINEMA, always have and now more then ever I'm determined to bring my stories to life in their most glorious form, RED RAW... finished in 4k, projected full 4K per eye in 3D on 100' screens within state of the art facilities, bringing something so unique in your cities that MOvies will be once again... MAGIC!!
