  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Adobe Premiere Pro And AE CS5 Help & Feedback

lol...thanks Mo...I know how to change a drive letter ... but like Rob said, the portable drives change constantly and sometimes you cannot use the original letter as another drive is using it (I don;t want to have to shuffle all the drive letters every time....a simple option in Premiere could fix all this) AE does a better job at managing proxies and locations

you might give each drive a unique drive letter.. when re-connect it just correct the letters to the right if something changed.. specialize one letter for drives that are not needed to be connected together..

and of course it would be better to change how premiere deal with drive letters.. this just an alternative solution to the problem..

For your information. As some plugins are not updated yet for CS5, I am currently running CS5 ProdPrem, as well as After Effects CS4 in the same OS (Win7 64 bit) no problems whatsoever. With the obvious glitch of Dynamic Link.

I have never run into that problem, I never use portable drives for various reasons, But I would try the new Cs5 project manager, it allows you to move projects and find footage

I'll check it out. But moving a project is not the same as a simple, friendly proxy system and folder re-assign system. Gee-wiz features are great, but I do feel that some core, simple issues like this still need to be addressed, and no one is addressing them because doing such simple programming does not give you the cover of magazines, nor draw crowds at NAB. I would venture, however, that simple interface issues affect the user experience MORE than any gee-wiz stuff.

I do not understand how you do not use portable drives. Do you shoot Red? 3 Days of shoot can easily fill 1.5 terrabytes. We have closets filled with drives in 3 locations. You put all this on internal drives?

This works sometimes, but not always, and can become tedious.

source settings dialog... (cont.)

source settings dialog... (cont.)

In AE select one clip in the project window and then select Interpret Footage, More Options and make your changes. Then go to File->Interpret Footage->Remember Interpretation. Then select the other clips and use File->Interpret Footage->Apply Interpretation

In PPro select all the clips and select source settings, the settings apply to all clips.

You name it - a dialog hidden under so many mouse clicks. Now do it like 600x per project :) and You will really want to... well... :smash:

The problem with remembered interpretation is one normally goes one clip after another in very long timeline and often there are intercut dialogues where the interpretation is identical for every other clip - absolutely forget about one setup for whole timeline, it really is set on a clip by clip basis.

If it was possible to have this interpretation dialog available say in clip parameters window in ppro (where trans, rot, scale is...), much like filters etc., so that one could ctrl-c ctrl-v copy it among clips... and, really, it is very important for red users, more than most plugins, for instance, so that I'd propose to move this menu to any location, where it is easily accessible, the settings are easy to copy and it is available on timeline!!, not on source file level - reason is one imports a project and has to match clips's colors one by one in the timeline.

Easy - just do it Yourself on any real world project, You'll confirm what I say here, I guess :)

Thanks and regards!

Understood... We know about that issue... For now the keyboard shortcut is the best we can offer. We are talking about enhancements here. We are also working with Rob to add better integration with RED tools...

Cheers

Sorry I meant I don't work with say a Red drive, I use a chain of Drobos. I have anti static moisture free plastic bins where I store drives, the Drobo uses drives you just slide in and out. Drive management is still old school for me, labeling and stacking.

These are all personal home projects for me, I would not recommend them in a business setting there are better media management tools. Check out Editshare.

Could somebody help me understand what is difference in performance (in CS5 working and rendering) between GTX 285 and FX 4800. There is major diffference in price, is fx 4800 worth of this? I cannot find any solution on this...

The FX4800 is playing as many layers with FX as your drives can supply (I tried 8!), while the GTX 285 is limited to three (wants to render if you apply an effect to the fourth).

If you don't need more than this, it's as good as the Quadro, I could do heavy FX on those three layers. I'd buy the GTX 285 now, save my money and wait until Adobe supports Fermi cards – the Quadro line will soon be outdated.

the new matte refine tool in AE is best Keying matte clean up tool I have seen, 1 click goodness. Cs5 keeps impressing me everyday. There little time saver enhancements they need to list. I am not sophisticated enough as a user to keep bumping into them everyday.

Keylight layer and Roto Brush + Refining matte layer Combination are sick

I should probably be posting this in Creative Cows AE forum, but since Dave is here I'd love to get his opinion. We're really looking forward to upgrading to Creative Suite CS5 and part of our upgrade process is to upgrade RAM in our workstations to 3GB/core, bringing most of our systems up to 24GB RAM. Right now our 8 core Macs are running 8 or 12GB of RAM.

However, we're not going to be installing the FX4800 card since we wont be using PPro. This isn't because of money, but because we're going to have to stay with FCP for editing - this is purely because of logistical issues, a great deal of us here would love to use Red in PPro, but it's just not possible at this time.

So my question is this, is installing all this extra RAM going to gain us anything for AE rendering? Or is it a waste of time installing this RAM if we're not going to be using PPro and the FX4800? Finally, would installing the FX4800 do anything to speed up AE rendering?
Thanks
Stuart

AE loves ram! I worked all cycle making sure it will happily use it. Setup MP with about 2 gigs per core and you will have 8 AE's running in the background for accelerated rendering and then another 5 gigs for foreground caching... Good setup! If you are using all the RAM in AE you probably want to quit FCP or setup another 3 gigs for other apps in your prefs... PPro and AE communicate RAM needs but FCP is on its own...

Cheers

Dave

The FX4800 doesn't earn you much, but RAM does! We were able to use brand-new Neatvideo 64 bit on 4K sources under CS5 with 16 GB, which always crashed upon us under CS4 (only in 4K, it was a memory issue, on 2K it worked well).

Hi all, I gave a chance to Premiere, today I tried to edit
a commercial in PP, but sincerely,
it's sucks. Freezing, crashing and freezing and crashing.
All my footage are red 4k hd, the timeline is 1080 red preset,
my mac is a 2.8 quad xeon ,osx 10.6.3, 12gb ram, and 4gb
raid, and GTX285 was quadro fx 5600 but I changed to
GTX285 for try mercury engine. And I unistall and instal
and again the Premiere Pro still isn't pro. However After
Effects,Encore and Photoshop are amazing. Adobe, nice try, but
was not this time.

Paulo, the problem is with your system. Ppro is stable on all our systems (MAC and PC) and it's very fast. I never thought I would say this, but it really makes FCP feel like an outdated editing app....oh wait...it's outdated! :ihih:

Being able to work in any format natively with no transcoding (not having to use any kind of transcoding or re-wrapping to Quicktime) is awesome!

I have pretty much the identical system other than 14gb ram and a SSD for the OS and apps. I have had zero crashes at all with Premere on my RED footage.

and BTW, Crashing doesn't mean it is not a pro app, I worked on Lustre and it was crashing.. I worked with final cut pro since version 2 and I would tell you this is the most crashing app I used.. I'm now working with Photoshop CS5 on MBP 4.1 with 4 Gigs of ran and when I open two panoramas together it crashes..

you have to figure out what makes it crash.. or ask for technical support..
