Adobe Announces Support for Mysterium X

David,

When I try to load R3D footage after installing the plugins in appropriate directories prescribed in PDF, I am getting error and my AE CS5 Trail quits.

Any Idea?

Error Message - Attached.
So, the plugins work with the trial versions?

I'm afraid not, since MPEG-2 is needed for preview. Unfortunately the trial is very limited – not Adobe's fault, but restrictions imposed by the licensors. Better try to find someone to demo a full version to you, it's worth it!

We just started looking at adding this support... Will most likely show up in the future...

Thanks for the update. It's quite amazing to see how good the old files from the early builds appear with the color version 2.

If you get this feature of importing the color grading from Redcine-X, then everything is perfect.

Previewing is done by MPEG-2, AFAIK.

I meant the R3d plugins. Or is that what you were referring to?

I think the plugins should actually work as they don't have mpeg in them. However you won't have any sequences presets because we use MPEG-2 for the preview format. But playback or setting up your own presets without mpeg2 should allow you to test wtih

Cheers

I started my editing career with Premiere 12 years ago. I eventually became a senior editor using Avid before buying my own Avid and starting a successful corporate and advertising production company.

I'm really thrilled to be using Premiere again and my Avid Adrenaline is now my backup system! Really Adobe you're back on track!

So I worked with Khan on his problem and I am hoping yours is as easy to solve. Khan made backup copies of ImporterREDServer and ImporterRED in the SAME location inside the app package. THIS WILL NOT WORK! Please move the old copies into a backup folder in your user directory. This should fix your problems. Good luck! If this isn't your problem send me a private message.

Adobe should let Mac Users of Production Premium and Master Collection do a one-time serial number swap from Mac to Windows version on upgrade to CS5. I'd be all for the HPz800 if I didn't have to buy full version of Adobe Software switching from Mac to PC. I've never really understood that policy.

Actually, this has been allowed for quite a while now, at least since CS3 -- maybe longer, but my brain doesn't go back that far. :-) . All you have to do is:

1. Make sure that you have an Adobe ID account. If you don't have one already, you can create an Adobe ID account on this page:

https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/membership/index.cfm?loc=en_us&nl=1

2. Register your current software to your Adobe ID account. Use this page to do this:

https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/gpr/index.cfm?1001=&nf=0&email=&v=1

3. If you are in the US, call the Adobe sales number: 1 (800) 585-0774 and tell them that you would like to purchase a cross-platform upgrade. They'll help with the rest. Outside the US, contact your local Adobe sales office.

If you are upgrading, you'll only pay the usual upgrade price. If you are doing this as a straight same-version platform switch (CS5 to CS5, for example), you'll be asked to sign a "letter of software destruction" and then pay a nominal fee for the new disks. IIRC, it's $5 plus shipping. Not much.

1- When you making a copy of ImporterREDServer into New folder, Make sure you move that folder Out from "Contents" Folder

2- When you making a copy of ImporterRED.bundle into New folder, Make sure you move that folder Out from "Media Core" Folder

Hi Michael,

This is probably a very ignorant question, but does CS5 After Effects have a 3D workflow, or ...

If not... is that a work-in-progress or do you know of a 3rd Party plug-in that supports it for the PC ( I'm assuming Cineform Neo3D would)?

I would have left eye and right eye footage on separate memory cards to import in...

After Effects doesn't have a specific setup for this however, it works pretty well from what I hear. Here is a tutorial:

Michael has been doing a ton of work here so he will have more info when he sees your question.

I look forward to Michael's response...

Thanks for the feedback Dave. In the meanwhile, do you know if the tutorial covers importing left eye and right footage? I have 60fps 1080p footage to bring in...

I am not sure... Michael has been doing most of the testing... I think the basic premise is that you bring in left eye and right eye and then use some simple expressions....

Thanks Dave. I had the exact same problem, moving those files out of the contents folder solved it! Might be worth putting a note in the read me to explicitly not put the orig files in the content folder and putting it there will result in a crash. I ignored the message the first time thinking it didn't matter where the originals were copied to.

For premiere I left it in the contents folder and it read the r3d files, though moved it out now just in case.

David, just a quick comment: The Adobe software automatically suggested to update from PPro 5.0 to PPro 5.01, and I accepted the update. As a result the manual update to latest R3D file importer was replaced by a newer version than that included in PPro 5, but with a version which does not support latest Color Science. Once updated manaually again to the latest version, everything works just fine.

Summing up, it's better to update first to 5.01 and only then manually update the latest R3D-files support.

I think step 6 points it out pretty clearly... In retrospect it could have been even more explicit. Glad it is now working for you...

After Effects is definitely used quite a bit for stereoscopic, not because it has many specific stereoscopic features (really just a few). It's strengths derive mostly out of it's pure flexibility. 3d compositing space, virtual camera rigs, etc make it possible to recreate the real world setup inside After Effects. Yes, you can bring in left and right eye footage and preview it. (only anaglyph at the moment). The tutorials and resources on the web are the best way to understand the best practices in AE. There are a few AE scripts out there to ease the setup.

We are planning for more specific stereoscopic support, but it's too early to say what we'll be shipping in the future or when. By all means, let us know what you want though. It's a work in progress.
