at the end of the day, if this new pricing strategy is so enormously compelling and amazing, why force everyone? if it's so perfect for everyone's needs, then we'll all doubtlessly migrate to the new program automatically, right? we'd be stupid not to; it's that amazing, right?

no, it's not. what once cost me ~$300 - $400 every 18 months or so will now cost me $600 a year. if i decide to stay in this industry, adobe gets a permanent draw on my bank account monthly.

not only that, but i HAVE to pay. forever. forever, and ever, and ever

that is the end of it for me. if this remains unreversed, i'm gone.

the real pisser is how much of an advocate i've been for adobe since switching. what a complete waste.

never thought i'd be looking at the FCPX feature list again. jesus.

Don't be surprised IF and WHEN you are surprised by FCPx as an NLE.....i've been on it now for a few months and am very impressed...i'd gladly keep my Suite updated with Adobe to own BOTH...but this new move by Adobe to me is just ridiculous. From a customer point of view it makes no sense to me to join the cloud. I've NO INTEREST at all in that...all i want is stable software with routine updates. To suggest that being part of the cloud makes it easier and faster for Adobe to make/do updates just seems like nonsense. What's wrong with automatic updates as in the past....? All marketing hype in my opinion to try and woe us over....not happening in my court. Good by Adobe, hello again apple and no more photoshop, and good morning Pixelmator.

I have to admit this: in the previous "Apple aims to win back editors.." thread I was really struggling with FCPX, and even had something terrible happening to me on a project due to misinformation on the software. However, I'm starting to get the grips with it and liking it more. Its REALLY STABLE right now, and am getting faster. Am starting to like it.

I used to brag about how great Premiere was. The other day someone asked me about learning Premiere. I told them not to waste their time since their learning curve is also an investment. Why invest yourself into something you will be forever paying to use. What happens when you have a week left till the end of your contract? Do you sign up for another year, or do you keep paying some ridiculous month to month rate till you make up your mind? Something we've never had to worry about before. It's ridiculous to think you have to keep paying someone to reopen your own files.

FCP X road to damascus experience

FCP X road to damascus experience

Ha! Ha! I was SO pissed off with apple over the whole death of FCP 7 thing and took a blood oath never to use FCP X. I utterly scorned it - and how about that wretched wand icon for effects - infantile. But now ... well I have been learning it and I have to say that I am utterly intrigued by the new editing method and am really enjoying it. It is kind of exhilirating to work with the magnetic timeline. Once you work with the keyboard shortcuts, there is a real feeling of transparency about it. it allows you to work very intuitively.

Sure there are things that they need to do - for a start please do get rid of the wand. Give us more flexibility and say floating windows. In particular, I still find the new colour grading tools utterly hateful. I just want to use traditional colour grading methods not a new method invented by an Apple engineer. This is not a reason not use it though as I am sure that there will be great third party colour grading plug ins soon. I am really hoping that Baselight make a plug in just as they did just before FCP 7 died. If the FCP X team were just a bit more flexible and listened to what editors are saying they would win a lot of people back.

It is really worth while revisiting it particularly if you are a red user as the workflow with red footage is great. I was totally hard core against it but genuinely see how it could take its place again as a professional NLE.

Ah! Thank you gentlemen. I was beginning to think I was the only one to feel this way after the previous few pages of Adobe lovefest.

With other subscription models such as antivirus software, if you stop paying for virus updates, your antivirus software does not stop working. It will still check for viruses right up the last definitions you were subscribed to for as long as you like. It does not call the mothership for permission to work. It's not Adobe's subscription model itself that is so wrong. If Adobe's CC worked the same way as antivirus subscription software, I'd be all over it like a cheap suit. It's that when you no longer subscribe, you've lost all access to your own work. That's just ludicrous.

For those that have only used the CC rental scheme, then that's fine. That's what they signed up for and cannot reasonably expect anything more. For those that had bought previous CS suites - especially the latest CS6 - if they sign up for the CC deal, and if they decide to drop out, the software they last used should continue to work - with no further updates - as they last used it in the cloud. Just like antivirus software. That would be a fair deal.

It's a fantastic businessmodel to squeeze out money from customers. If you ever start working with their software you always need to pay to get access to your work. Doesn't matter if you need to open up an old project or just check some files somewhere, you need to pay to get access to what you have on your own harddrive. Because it isn't backwards-compatible with previous versions of software of the bought license, you can't open it up on older software befor this model.

I'm not sure if people really realise what's really going on here. It's a good model for a larger business, but for freelancers and such, it's a joke.

Apparently, FilmLight already have it kinda running, but from what I'd been told, in comparison to FCP7 and Avid, FCPX is a nightmare to write a Baselight plugin for.

baselight - excellent news

baselight - excellent news

Hi Jake.

Thanks for that information. That sounds promising. If Baselight does become available for FCP X it will actually make it a really compelling package. Every time I see those strange color grading balls in Final Cut Pro X my resentment flares up again.

I also asked Apple for regular color wheels, but that being said:

- once you get the hang of the color board, you can do a lot of corrections very quickly, and very carefully, trough the keyboard arrow UP and DOWN. (still want at least an option for color wheels)

- I want more functions from Color like trackers, denoising, custom masks, and I also asked Apple about this. That being said, with the built-in tools, there are a couple of very good functions considering you are working with built-in tools of an NLE. You can make masks, both with a color picker and/or a rectangle/circle mask. If you use it together with Coremelts SliceX, you can have it with keyframeable custom masks, and with the latest upgrade, you even have access to Mocha's tracker.

- Quality is good (I haven't heard good things about the built-in tools in Premiere...), you have a very good XML workflow with DaVinci, and if you work in Prores, renders and exports with the built-in collour correction tools are very fast.

- Nattress also has his curves-plugin compatible with FCPX, for those who are interested.

That being said, yes, I hope Apple adds more Color-tools to FCPX. Let's see how it goes.

O.T.

Another baselight plug-in for FInal Cut would be compelling and the round trip to Resolve is so easy I see no reason to touch Apple's color board.

From that Adobe thread linked earlier...

The change org petition must have been hacked as it is not accepting my five cents worth and shows 0 entries in the stats.

With the annual pricing in Switzerland I just get Resolve for grading and use Final Cut Pro X for editing. After a year I save on the subscription quite a lot.

It's infuriating that with the lowest taxes Adobe expects the swiss to pay the highest price.

signed too, for whatever good it will do.

I upgrade my CS production premium suite every couple of releases. Currently upgrading from CS5 - CS6 is £650 and that's a one off cost about every 1.5 - 2 years.

Creative Cloud, for me is way more expensive, with the added bonus I have to keep subscribed just to open an old project in 5 years time. I'll be looking for alternatives in the future if adobe do not provide them.
