Adjusted Delivery Schedule...

Is there anybody out there who can answer if there is a direct connection between serial number and tracking number?

This is so much better than the IPod release. For them, there was just one date of the feeding frenzy. RED has managed to keep the frenzy going non-stop. This company is going to be one big fat whale with all the non-stop feeding.

Thanks jim... I hope you to be very happy with your life same me.
Red company is the first company in the world to let the small pro to be big pro. thanks from Arabic Man to big American Man. :)

Someone may have asked. Just wondering if picking up in person helps in getting the camera a few days earlier than if it has to be packaged and shipped. (For our next shoot, a few days may make the difference.)

No, it doesn't. It can actually be the opposite, as it is in our case (51-100). Shipping starts Monday but pickup is Friday. If a few days make the difference with your shoot then you're probably cutting it too close.

:help: Jim, I don't want to sound negative because I personally think it's fantastic and a breath of fresh air that you are upfront and keep open communications with your customers.

But I gotta say this... why put serial numbers when serial numbers aren't used anymore (from a timestamp point of view)? Correct me if I'm wrong, but serial numbers are completely meaningless to almost half of your Red customers (now that you're up to over 4000).

So it was great to get an email announcement this morning, but a disappointing tease to find a list of meaningless serial numbers (for those who don't have serial numbers).

I feel a little bad for those who are expecting their cameras to begin shipping on Feb 30th. It may be a verrrrrry long wait.

I kid, I kid! :-)

I'm just happy to be a tiny consumerist part of this, to me this is kind of like getting a SGI workstation or a Mac back in the day- all of a sudden, the possibilities just explode and the world gets a lot more interesting.

Thank you for this valuable information Jim.
For those who know the serial numbers of their cameras this is an excellent reference.

Though a few people have been asking questions regarding the orders that have not been issued serial numbers. Those questions so far appear to be generally left unanswered.
Curran has taken the initiative in the following manner:

I guess since RED is too busy to work out the timestamp/serial number issue. Maybe those who don't have a serial number can try to figure it out among themselves. At one point I remember they had 2500 orders. Use that point as a reference for those who ordered before it. etc. . . . . . . .

Here is some more info for reference:

09-03-2007 Sean R. said: These guys got it spot on. If you order now you can expect delivery in Spring of 2008, probably March. Once again though to remind all these are tentative dates and subject to change, however a good estimate.
The most important thing is the IBC dynamic. We expect a big influx of orders at IBC and an even bigger one right after so the queue will indefinitely be lengthened.

Thank you Curran for your post.
It's an excellent reference point.

On the 18th of June, 2007 Jim says the following
If you place an order now, we require a 10% deposit. There are just about 2000 orders total to date.

Jim

•Can anyone tell us what the last serial number to be issued was?

•WHY were serial numbers no longer issued?

In an E-mail to me on the 20th of June 2007 Kelly told me that "anyone who ordered at NAB 2007 or after was not assigned a serial number, only a time stamped order form"

So it seems in April they stopped issuing Serial Numbers which means that about 2,500+ orders have not been issued serial numbers, yet now we're given an approximate shipping schedule based on Serial Numbers which is a bit vague for those 2,500+ orders who have no idea what their cameras serial numbers are.

If Red knows that Serial Numbers 2000-4100 (for example) will start shipping from around late February 2008 to late May 2008, why are they not disclosing those Serial Numbers to those people who have orders that correspond within that serial number range?

These are just basic questions I imagine a few people would like direct answers to.

Sure the information provided above is extremely detailed and useful for those who already know the serial numbers of their cameras, and it is somewhat useful for those who do not know the serial numbers of their cameras, for example, since I ordered during NAB 2007 then I should be hoping to expect my purchase to be shipped out to me in early March 2008, but like many others who ordered during NAB and beyond I was not given the serial numbers for my cameras but instead told that my order had been "time stamped", and it would be really nice to know where my place is, and where I (and the many others out there) ACTUALLY stand in the Red Scheduling Universe.

If Red is giving us a shipping schedule based on serial numbers, is it too much to ask to know what the serial numbers of my cameras are, or to get
a straight and direct answer to the questions above?

If I were Jim I'd be pretty pissed. He posts a schedule that gives rough release dates all the way up to 4000 (Which should cover most of us I think). Then he gives release dates for firmware and remaining accessories.

And then some people INSULT him for not answering more questions. . . . . .

Who exactly has been "Insulting" to Jim?
I'll be the first to break their knee caps.

I think most of us here are very grateful and appreciative that Jim and the entire team at Red have been doing what they have done, and that Jim and the team at Red have been as responsive as they have, especially taking into consideration that they all are probably quite busy.

Yet there's nothing wrong with asking some basic questions here, questions that a few people obviously feel have not been adequately answered, otherwise they wouldn't be asking the questions, would they?

Is it insulting to ask questions?

I think it's more insulting to some people to have their questions remain unanswered.

Not that I'M personally feeling insulted or anything, because personally I'm not  but I think there are alot of people out here who want to know.
ya know?

I'm just one of them.

If Red issued serial numbers for all reservations they'd be stuck with the cameras from any cancelled orders, unless they shifted the numbers every time an order was cancelled, which would be a logistical nightmare.

The problem is that delivery is based by RED on serial numbers --- but about 2/3 of us have no idea where we fit into that system since we do not have a S/N.

Their decision to stop issuing S/N's has left a lot of people in the dark about when they can expect their camera. While the lucky first 1500 know when -- it's a possible 3 month window for 2000+ people.

Why is that?
If no one collects camera no 785 someone else can have it even if he/she has to stay in line. There is far to much humble understanding in this forum. We have to admit there sometimes is a lack of information. I am sure mr Jannard is aware of this and don't put us, who are wondering, in the black book. As I understand this is a man who himself would have the same kind of questions in a similar situation.
Hey guys.
He is a hero, right, and I would like to mould a statue made of silver extracted from 35 mm film.
But I still need some answers here.

Last I understood it, if camera #785 (for example) goes uncollected, it goes into the service pool, presumably to be cannibalized for parts should the need arise. No one gets it.
Wait, so they're not shipping #785 anymore???

Just kidding. :-) Guys, relax. It won't be until at least the new year that customers without serial numbers get their cameras, and lots of things are bound to change in that time. I know people want to know when their cameras are coming - we're all dealing with the same situation - but the best RED can do is tell you that you will have it as soon as possible. A "three month window" may not sound appealing, but the reality is that even if Jim had made a post saying "we estimate your camera will be available in February," that's essentially a three month window as well. Things change, delays happen, dates slip. I was part of a group that was originally looking at a July release after NAB, then it moved to "end of August," "September 15," "September 28," and now October 15. (And this week we were informed that if we want to pick it up in person, we have to wait until the 19th to do that). So at this point I'm not assuming anything anymore until the camera is in my hands.

I realize it's a tough pill to swallow when you live in a world of "iPhone launches on June 29th!" and "Halo 3 comes out on September 25th!" but realize that this is not a broad consumer product - in fact, it's a brand new product from a brand new company and it's already light years ahead of anything else even remotely close to it on the market. The other advantage that later reservation holders have is that you will for sure be getting a camera with the kinks worked out, ready to go for even the most demanding situations. I was never able to make a reservation through Panasonic or Sony for any of their cameras, so this system already puts you in a better spot.

Let's see how the next couple of months fare and where we stand with order numbers closer to the end of the year. I'm sure by that time Jim & Co. will have more information for those who are in the next cycle of orders.

Well said Häakon
