  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Adam Wilt Visits RED ( the long version )

A very insightful peek behind the RED curtain. I wonder how many are like me, willing to find the money for a RED ONE right now whatever it takes but putting it off knowing that EPIC and SCARLET are advancing to the finishing line at a daily pace

very exciting....
VERY VERY EXCITING

can't wait to get mine...

I find this report very reassuring. RED has multiple labs around the country and at least one of them is concentrating on finishing the firmware. Tattoo seems to be going really well. They're trying to solve any potential manufacturing niggle by hand crafting these beauties at the moment.

Yep, looks like we're approaching "end game" :)

This picture is very interesting:

The new baseplate looks like it has two sliding parts among other things. Would love to see a closeup version.

Cheers,

Paul

Looks like Chewbacca's toolbox when he was trying to fix the Millennium Falcon.

The little round thing in the middle, is that the famous flux capacitor?

Interesting report and Im glad Adam spent a lot of time on the form factor.

HDR has me smiling, and Im no longer worried about the performance or feature set of Epic, it will be amazing when it all comes together.

I don't really get all this hype about the DSLR form factor for motion. Anyone that shoots with a DSLR is well aware of it's compromises and is often buying tons of accessories to overcome these design limitations. In short, a new market has emerged for companies to make accessories that turn these DSLR's into usable shoulder mounted video cameras. So I don't see why all the configs we've seen are on emulating a format which is already flawed(unless it's just to highlight the size). A DSLR is really Epics secondary purpose. I'd love to see what you have lined up for tripod/shoulder work with the EVF.

I'm still hoping for a camera I can clip on and off a tripod quickly and put straight on my shoulder comfortably without adding or bolting on accessories/plates. That was my biggest gripe with the Red One.

So great work, Im excited about it, upgrade probably in the bag for me; but please don't forget to make something more ergonomic for traditional ENG/indie film use. I think that would be it's primary config, not as a DSLR.

I'm with you on that. I like a nice balanced shoulder rig.
On the other hand I can see how a minimal DSLR config could be good on a Steadicam type rig or for mounting in tight spaces.

Great article, lots of useful insights there. It all suggests we have a few months to go though before everything is polished enough for release.

Any of you, "Scarlet has been forgotten" folk notice this?

The interchangeable lens mounts with cable-less electronic connections seem very elegant. Can we expect a similar solution for the 5" monitor attachment (built in connectors as an option)?

Comment on one part:
Adam Wilt said:
If you want to build a camera heavier than four pounds and fatter than a DVX100, and make it usable off the tripod without a support rig, you have two choices for the design: shoulder mount, or DSLR. Handycams just don’t work at this scale.

There's also a third choice which is rotating organic-shaped handle.

It may not be as simple to build but it is the best choice for the shooter because it enables shooting from various angles with smallest strain for hand and forearm muscles and for hand and wrist tendons. Shape, angle and overall ergonomics of a typical DSLR handle are not optimal for motion.

This is where DSMC system has advantages in product design because of system modularity.

yup, I got the impression things were still a way off. But Im happy to wait. For those like me with little lighting kit, the HDR mode is amazing and worth the wait.

Don't get me wrong a DSLR is great for certain situations and I use mine all the time for shooting video, but it is a compromise. I'd just like to see what Red have for the day-today use of a traditional professional camera. I just don't see it's primary use being in DLSR mode; but it seems to be really pushed as it's main configuration. I hope this isnt their replacement for something portable but shoulder mounted.

A few questions:

1) Is there any chance of fan noise ruining shots?

2) He mentioned the ability to use the Epic in the rain. Is the Epic waterproof then, or close?

EPIC and Scarlet

EPIC and Scarlet

Is there any chance of fan noise ruining shots?

No, fan speed is under software control.

He mentioned the ability to use the Epic in the rain. Is the Epic waterproof then, or close?

I wouldn't suggest throwing it in the sea :-), but yes it's a pretty solid design.

An amazing amount of work has gone into bringing the DSMC system to this point.
This is the clearest look I have yet seen behind the RED curtain.

Great work RED Team.

Now I can plan. This fantastic insight into the workings of RED has helped me get a feel for when I may receive my first camera.

Loved the writing and the pics... especially the one of the Red Ray Pro. First evidence I've seen that it exists.

But hopefully there will be no more product releases for a while. It's gonna take me some time to be able to acquire what they've already developed.
