  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Accidentally shot anamorphic 8k FF not in 6:5 mode.

So we shot in 8k ff on anamorphic kowas. We didn’t go into 6:5 mode and have a 3.4(3.7?) aspect ratio. Can footage be salvageable as a 4K/3.8k without losing too much quality or what else can be done?

Wow, thanks so much Phil! Thats insane, so you're saying i can still keep the quality of 8k by losing the edges. Which is fine since we were framing 16:9 (i know its weird that we arent going for a 2:41 aspect but the dp wanted the kowa for the look it specifically gave but not the anamophic aspect) still and had a LOT of edge spacing left. Is this through RedCine-X? do you have another post that could possibly go a bit further in depth or should i just play around?

Yes, you lost nothing. By doing what you did.

The only drawbacks as I see it from shooting FF ana is the difficulty to focus as your frame get to look like a banner across the screen if you view in FF 2xana mode and if you view it in normal FF mode everything look squeezed.

Then also as you record the whole sensor you loose on compression options. Simply you can not go as fast and with the same low compression as 6:5 alow you to. But as FF 8k for the most part looks very fine in any available compression thats one I would not worry about.

So the benefit is that you recored a lot of look around on the sides. I do that a lot with ANA´s. We just shot a small commercial down in Mallorca for a juice brand. Wanted to make a side tracking shot for the pack shot with the bottle centered in frame. With a dolly it is quite tricky to move and perfectly pan while doing it. With a ladder dolly even more so... Solution put the Kowa 100mm on go in FF 2x ANA and simply track with no pan. Then post stabilize on the bottle... Nices little product shot I done in a long time, using the look around on left to right to keep the bottle centered.

Can not show it just yet, as film is out later this week.
