Accessories that WILL WORK and those that are DOA

I wanted to start a thread that listsaccessories that have been confirmed that will work and also thosethat are DOA of end of line. Please dont behead me if some info is incorrect just post the correct info.
Will Work with Weapon

5. +1 ADAPTOR MODULE (This is my conclusion given that there id no HDMI at the bottom of the camera any more)

I doubt any current module will work based on a back view of the camera that was revealed in today's video by Jarred. The contacts look different and there is no "trianlge".

Unless they come up with some sort of a legacy back module adapter.

yeah I don't think any existing module will be compatible. Looks like this time around, the new modules will be better thought out and capable of actually carrying debayered video through the back connections.

I would venture a guess that the redmote could still control the camera, it just would not mount and charge the on the camera. It might give you wireless control of camera functions via firmware. Then again, a whole new wireless world might be upon us.

Apple has made themselves a better company by throwing out their basic OS several times in 30 years at great cost and imposition to its loyal customer. A new MS PC could probably boot-up off floppies running MS-DOS - which is their strength and weakness

If RED throws out the baby with the bathwater for a much better solution (than the physical limits of the current brain architecture) that allows true expandability, limitless upgrades and 3rd party solutions (like Apple's App Store) then I'm all good. If it's a NAB headline grabber without the well defined 5 year strategic plan to go with then not so much. A couple weeks will tell all. Then onto the issue of ship dates ;-)

Good points Zeb. I hope to see at least some announcements if not mockups of future modules. The Pro/IO module was a bust so I hope to see a better version of that as a module. Better modules will also help with lessening the frankenstein problems with having to add basic functions from third parties.

Upgrade / Discount path is going to be really interesting. There's a lot of things I've purchased to get the Epic/Dragon rolling that really do add up and that won't cross over. Understandable though, it's a new camera. That said the Dragon is almost a year old in terms of the general public being able to purchase one. Really interested to see what specs and abilities this new one has.

Some modules will work.

some will some won't. Some modules like the plus one module become redundant, since there are now 2 LCD/EVF connections on the Weapon brain itself.

Part of me just wonders whether I should keep all that parts that won't work on Weapon and just build another MX or Dragon? Depends how many parts we talking, I already have like 8 mags that won't work lol!

Apple play a much tougher 'game' with their loyal customers ... like getting people to upgrade to version of their iOS version only to discover it is sans Google maps, whilst also removing their ability to downgrade; or to EOL a product with no ability to buy futhrr copies that same day.

Red (relatively) recently provided a firmware update to the Red One, and at every HW upgrade have broadcast it to the point it must heavily eat into their profits, and have bent over backwards for us more times than I have teeth left.

Having said that, not clinging to the past, and actually defining the future, has made Red and Apple great catalysts, and great leaders.

It's not like they're going to have a store front at NAB selling Weapons . . . lot's of time to let things settle out and make personal decisions. Heck, I still haven't got the OLPF upgrade done or tried out JM's cool OLPF offerings so still much to discover with my Dragon

The rear face of Weapon does look like there will be loads of accessories that will no longer be compatible. Unless they bring out an adapter module to interface the old with new. Red have spent a lot of time , money and effort developing all these modules and it would seem like such a shame to through all of these out with the bath water so to speak. It could take several months or years for Red to replace all those module given the R&D time and resources involved.
I have 2 rather large accessories that require the DSMC Side Handel to operate the Dragon. As this accessory is DOA I am not sure what I am going to do. I would love to stay in the Red ecosystem but if I am in for $50-60K to get weapon working with all new accessories and underwater I might be out . The amortisation of $15-20K is very different from $50-60k given the time between upgrades.

While everybody here is highly motivated to upgrade to Weapon, do remember that the future camera lineup is Epic Dragon, Scarlet Dragon, and the various Weapon models.

I don't think that many people who went through all the upgrades so far and are running a viable business would want to skip the Weapon upgrade. For those people, all the modules they have will become obsolete.

Sure, the Epic Dragon will still make great images, as it does at the moment but those of us who depend on producers and trends will have to upgrade or be left behind.
I believe that there's only a very specific, smaller market segment that can afford not to upgrade because their business does not depend on market whims.

This is speaking from personal experience, having been at the end of Stage 3 the last time. My Red1, though perfectly capable, sat unused for close to a year because everybody wanted to shoot on Epic.

I'm sure that all people who invested in a EPIC and an underwater housing are all with a great expectation to see if weapon will work in their existing underwater housing model.
The house investment for sure was pretty high for sure...
