  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

A taste...

Not exactly sure what this is... :-)

Well that makes two of us.

I do find it interesting in that it appears that the surface facing us with the "RED DIGITAL..." test on it appears to be flat and vertical, and perhaps there's even a should jutting out below on the top of where the ribbed portions begin.

Whereas the corresponding surface on the surfacing facing away from us appears to have a curved profile. At least the radius on the "left rear corner" (from our perspective) makes it look that way. The larger area of flat area on the top behind the RED eye logo seems to agree with that as well.

Hence the thing is asymetrical on the horizontal axis. I wonder why.

Whatever it is... I hope it makes it in to the next Aliens movie... do you guys have HR Giger doing design work?

Well, It's obviously Scarlet..., and do those look like holes for rails built in?

Alright, just throwing it out there...Red Scarlet 4k "portable" Projector...they said scarlet was going to change right?

That was my same guess in a different thread, that a form of RED RAY is getting integrated into a modular delivery system that works with the camera...

...fueling this hypothesis is Jim's statement on dvinfo, in response to an inquiry about RED RAY, that "the playing field is moving as we speak"

...so before it was even fully realized, the specs for RED RAY seem to be a moving target as well.

...what would be really cool is if we were looking at a modular delivery system that could hold an edit/graded/finished digital file and be hooked up to the camera and plugged into a projector or monitor for instant, portable 1080/2k/4K delivery, that would be total game changer...

...and would totally democratize not only the front end of production, but the very nature of theatrical release. now *that* would be beyond my wildest dreams. someone should tell Mark Cuban...

...which begs the question, what would RED RAY be? if it, too, became even bigger than its initial promise...hmm, RED RAY is already so revolutionary and so far from being realized in a diluted form that it is hard to "think beyond...."

I'd settle for a Soldstore, though...schlepping less gear while shooting CF would be fantastic.

Wow, Scarlet will have the ability to take instant photos that develop in your hands right before your eyes! Revolutionary!!

(I bet I'll be able to make a killing selling photos at events with a rig like that)

Damn, it would be soooooo tempting to make a 3D mockup render of my own, fake version of "Scarlet" and "accidently" leak it here - just to see all the speulating h*ll break loose... But i guess i better not ;-)

Maybe this is an accessory plate made to connect both hotswapable batteries as well as 128GB REDRAM drives???

(Or is this the main Scarlet body itself???)

Jim are we getting close? (I may have to bug Ted today about it!)

Okay, I'll have go at speculating.

Scarlet and Epic have gone modular. The camera on the right is the monstro S35 sensor and analog to digital electonics module. The other module on the bottom is Scarlet's electronics, this is where REDCODE compression takes place and where the mic inputs and HDMI, LCD output sockets are. What you can't see is the inputs and outputs on the left.

When docked into the Epic module, the system will output at 5K. When docked to the Scarlet module, the system will output at 4K resolution. This because Epic's electronics is beefed up and can handle the increased resolution. When the DSMC grip is attached on the right side of the camera instead, the system will output high res stills and 2K video.

On one hand I want to agree with you...but on the other hand I don't see Jim giving us the whole thing and then making us cripple it based on what grip we stick on...that part of the speculation doesn't seem to jive with his style...

Post Improvements? Mounting options?

Post Improvements? Mounting options?

I would like to see a smoother low end post process. Judging by the number of threads regarding post I would say I am not the only one. This would be included in the big announcement? Or am I being seduced with a Lamborghini with a chevy small block under the hood?

I am about to purchase the RED Nikon mount today and have it Underdahled. It would be interesting to hear what Jim brings to the plate regarding mounts. There is a lot of nice glass out there that people still can't shoot with and the majority won't be able to for another year. I am talking mounts that can be ordered and you have them at the very least a month later.

I know to go down in history for spear heading such an innovation as the RED One Camera Company is the thing. Having mounts and post would be additions that sometimes don't get the due they deserve.

Lets see if Jim is listening...

1. Smoother Post
2. Greater Variety of mounts available within 1 month.
3. Oh yeah, 3, being able to shoot 200fps at 4k (maybe that is too much to ask for?)

I love this company.

But you're killing me with anticipation!

Thank you.

This kind of reminds me of of when I used a laser pointer in Africa to mess with some wild baboons one evening. In this case, Jim is having fun with the laser, while we are running around in circles like baboons. :)

Yes you're right. I don't think it would suit his style to cripple something. I was thinking that different modules allow for different requirements such as cooling, buffer, cost and form factor. Eg DSLR and Scarlet can be handheld and the DSLR can be even smaller. Epic needs more cooling & space.

By sharing a common sensor module, Red can get economies of scale and owners can upgrade later or have more options.
