Ok guys, give Sanjin a rest now. Waiting comfortably for my s35 HDRx™™. Still shooting with what I got.

P.S.: By the way, Sanjin, why don't you let the people talk who acutally make movies?

I think that RED is working directly with people who making movies...btw, do I to mention their names here...

and that's just because RED is sitting already in the another train mostly driven from the next generation of digital cinema makers

and also with the latest RED achievement that was described here with test performance of HDRx and Magic Motion.

Just for my own gratification...

$1000 = $200 a month for five months (putting the arbitrary day I'd like to purchase the camera as March 1 2011).

That's ~$1.15 dollars a day. Doesn't seem so bad to me now.

Some thoughts on Sanjin.

What do you care Sanjin? If RED offered a "nonHDRx" and a "with HDRx" option then just buy the one you want. Your posts in this thread seem to have only one goal and that is reduce any chance of opening up options for those with already limited finances. Hmm ... very heroic … why not see the bigger picture and help others out instead of enforcing your own interpretation of everything on everyone around you?

Some thoughts on Jim Jannard. My interpretation of this event.

Something that has previously gone from $3000 to $3750 to $4750. And with reputations at stake ... an increase of 20% to $5740 is something significant.
I ask myself - why would Jim do that?
I think the answer must be that he is convinced that HDRx is something earth shatteringly good.
A thing that must be rolled out as a feature across all cameras and thereby become a strong part of the RED brand identity of quality first.
This is the only reason I can think of that would be strong enough to break his previous price promises.
Well if that is the case - what about the countless hours of quality RED footage we already see on TV and in movie theaters today that is not shot with HDRx?
Is that not sufficient evidence that non HDRx RED cameras are also amazingly good?

Seems a little inaccurate and perhaps even a bit insulting to accuse Jim of breaking "his previous price promises." Given all the disclaimers he has constantly made in his posts and IN WRITING, and the degree to which this project has evolved, I think it is highly inappropriate to phrase it this way. I don't see how you can see anything he has said about pricing or features as anything more than targets, but certainly not "promises."

But that's just me. I'll just feel indignant on his behalf.

Great thought. That's less than a cup of coffee!

We have watched this camera go from an undefined concept with a slogan, to a highly evolved working prototype over a period of about 2 years. Along the way it has become much more than any of us ever thought it would be. That development process has come at a price as the camera has matured. Then again Canon just introduced their replacement for the 1/3" XH-A1 that is $3k more than the original. Scarlet with all its features is roughly the same price range as the new Canon. In short, it is still relatively cheap and comparable in price to most of its direct competition.

Insult, indignation or inaccuracy was not intended in my phrasing and I hope this does not detract from the point that I was trying to make.
No doubt JJ has sat through many severe and intended diatribes but I am still sure I he is appreciative of you fending for him.

I think it's obvious that he has to put his best technology into as many cameras as he possibly can. His goal is to revolutionize, not just one-up the competition.

Also, they really need to do more to distinguish themselves from the DSLR world. Really, the other guys are pulling themselves together in the sub-$5K space, and it won't be too long when they will be upping their own game. RED is smart to do more now, to stay ahead.

There will be dissatisfaction with people hoping for more of a bargain camera and dissatisfaction from users, like myself, who are wondering whether another $21K for an EPIC is such a smart move, in light of this development.

There will be some fall-out. But in the long run, this is absolutely the smartest move for RED as a company - and a sign of their commitment to putting out the best. Not the cheapest. Not the most expensive, for that matter. Simply, the best.

I think a better question is: Would you be willing to give up HDR for a hard release date in December of THIS YEAR?

Seriously, the extra money can be made up but the lost time cannot.

Price jumped from $3750 to $5750. 1k more was for lot of people tought to swallow, but 2k more definitelly killed their dream of buying Scarlet because it simply eats their budget for other tools (other modules, tripod, head, mic, mb, filters, lenses, powercomputers, hdd storage, softwares etc. etc.). So they now must go back to that world of crapy picture from other cameras and deal with all that ugly things like low bitrate, heavy comprimation artifacts, interlacing, only low fps., heavy skew etc. etc. We were tuned in a beautiful smooth picture and we thought that we can finally abandon that miserable marketing politics of other manufacturers and put our money on something worthless.

Basic idea was quite amazing - a small compact camera for rest of us (and soccermoms) for amazing price. That promise was truly revolutional. ... It should be only fixed lens zoom 3K camera with raw recording. Jim and Tim were all serious, yes we think we can make it and we will do it ... and it will be a real pro camera! Ok that sounds great. Then there was serious (and unstoppable) demand from us redusers for version with interchangable lens version and Jim was Oh you really dont need it, trust me, there is not enough small and cheap glass on market for this 2/3 format camera and your collection of Nikons will work only like tele etc.... Then suddenly he changed his mind and announced that historical big bang of several Scarlets of all sizes with several mounts, Monstros and even small primes for affordable prices. That was amazing time, we got what we want and even more. We found that there is somebody who is listening to us in this industry. It really grabbed attention of all media and other manufacturers were quite surprised. So Canon came up with DSLR video revolution with crippled 5D video option.

Than came that first 1k price increase and now second 1k increase. Damned, damned so dream about perfect picture is disappearing again. I dont want to speculate how importatnt for us is this HDR function, if its worth 1k price increase or if there are other reasons for it because I really dont know it. I just want to know when I can buy a camera with nice picture for decent price? I mean camera from that Scarlet basic idea. Maybe somebody else will finish this idea. There is nothing wrong on basic model which shoot perfect picture. If I will need more functions there should be offer of better cameras or other modules. If it will looks like breadbox model, than ok I dont care, I care only about quality picture an reliability of camera. If you have to create another brand for it, create it, I can live with other shades of red.

Im definitelly not sitting and waiting for next big thing, I shoot with everething what I got in my hand, but I dont do it for living and I dont expect I will make big money with it. I just love it and once you see real quality picture its realy realy hard to go back.

I remember when I was a kid learning that a Mercedes SL was just $6800. What a beautiful car - I wanted one. A lot of money at the time but I could imagine some day affording one. Now they are, what... $100,000 USD? Those jerks at Mercedes priced me right out of the market. Boy, am I pissed.

I feel your pain Petr.
But even with 2k $ extra this is still a dirt cheap camera.
Take a little more time to save up. 2k extra is doable in 1 to 2 years. And by that time you can buy the fastest computer out there now for less. And harddrives are going to be bigger for the same money aswell. So saving up for the same setup might go faster then you imagined.

As for the rest of this thread:
:closed2ur0:

The decision was made, get on with your life. You could do something with the time you spend on this subject over here to make an extra 1000$.
Just an idea...

Terry I dont consider Red stuff like luxury item (unfortunatelly these cars are now electronic piece of crap) and sorry Oliver I spend on this subject only around 15 min because I have lot of work to do.

And yes all Red stuff is still bloody dirty cheap compared to anything from Sony, Arri, Panavison, Zeiss, Leica .... and some get so easily to used to it. I know where I am standing and what is going around, dont worry.

There was serious offer from Red which was taken seriously because with Red One they delivered what they promised. So no wonder that lot of people expect same again. But this time we must really count on it that "Everything in life changes...

btw. Oliver why you want close this thread which is intended for "the other 50%" and you are probaly in other half?

I understand that some one might want less of a camera for less money, but it is totally going back words in thinking and not only that, as the HDRx is not only some thing more, is a Lot more that will make even the low priced Scarlet a camera like no other on the market, and one step closer to the Big Brother Epic, even so IMO a completely different camera for a different purpose.. so I vote NO!

With all due respect, I don't think the delay was avoidable anyway. Don't think for a moment that HDRx™™™ is the culprit. I've become the most patient man on earth over the past 2 years.

Even though I completely empathize with Petr Dvorak, I think jaadgy akanni is right on the money. HDRx is just the "scapegoat" for the additional delay of the Scarlet program.

To be fair Terry, I don't ever recall Mercedes promising to deliver an affordable drool mobile for the masses, and then pricing it out of reach for half of them. There are more affordable models, and they come with compromises.

I appreciate the no compromises approach, but some seem to feel as if the dangling carrot has been snatched away after years of waiting. I wouldn't fault them for that.
