  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

65mm? The plot gets even THICKER?

Arri allied with Codex just to get 4k out. What does that have to do with Red or anyone's ability to do 65mm? Codex apparently can get 65mm done, so it is clearly not impossible. Strategic partnerships happen all of the time. I don't see the duress you refer to. Are you suggesting that the folks at Codex strong armed Arri for some reason?

(Edit) Vantage announced new 65's because they see the trend developing... So there will be 65mm Hawks. Those are not a daydream. Are other lenses required?

You state in one sentence that this won't happen because it would require "scrapping all upcoming modules", then three sentences later criticise Red because they "flagrantly discard their own developments". Do you consider this an insurmountable obstacle or not? You did notice that Weapon does do away with a number of modules already, didn't you? But image processing for the most part happens inside the body, doesn't it?

I really don't don't see your point. We are not daydreaming so much as we are foreshadowing. I am a dreamer though, that much is true. I suppose a Red 65 is a bit of a daydream. Not for any of the reasons you mention, but because 645 is actually on the road map.

The 65mm Idea for Weapon is just a day dream. To get the media out, You need to scrap all the upcoming modules etc. Even ARRI had to align with Codex, probably under duress, to achieve that goal. Vista or Full Frame 35 would be reasonably possible, I am sure it will be the next chip in Your weapon body. As radical as RED is, they also flagrantly discard their own developments. I am pretty sure they could have redeveloped their primes for a full frame version, if that wasn't how they started in the first place, but they just chucked it, so their 18-85 Zoom, would have been nice if You could put it on anything else but the RED. It was mechanically not an Angy, but was cost effective, just a little adjustment to create a Mark II, it would have been fine. Interestingly on the 65mm front, ARRI may have the Camera but Panavision has the lenses,
and what would You do with a 65 mm RED? Its like a Ferrari in the Garage with a dirt road out side. If You are going to shoot the next David Lean movie, better order about 6 Bodies and develop a non helical
lens focusing system a la Linhof Technica or Mamiya RZ. I am not saying its not possible, and if anyone would adapt nutty ideas, it would be RED, but the requirements for a 65mm production would be extensive
especially on the lens department. To usurp a 70s proverb to hitch a ride: grass, gas, ass or glass.

I think the 65mm glass market is growing and growing, making 65mm shooting less intimidating. Arri has rehoused Hassys. Panavision has 65mm glass. And Vantage has 65mm Anamorphics. And it's not very hard to "mod" normal Hassys. With RED's dedication to compressed raw, they are certainly well positioned to make 65mm happen...at some point.

Those 65 anamorphics are my new dream set for 2x

My comment was specifically directed towards a Weapon 65, not an eventual RED XXX65. It makes no technical or marketing sense to jump this far on the epic platform. Full Frame or Vista with
PL lenses on the market will be the next Chip to dump your Dragon for in the updated body. Why update at all to Dragon since it is neither here nor there in the formats. Too big for any Zoom lens
designed for Super 35, and 5 mm too short for full frame 35. A Vista Weapon will be worth the wait for sure, lets see.
