  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

5k Retina iMac

okay but what about 5k monitor only really just want that!!!

I assume that attaching a rocket card or nvidia graphics cards via thunderbolt expansion chassis will work?

http://www.sonnettech.com/product/legacyproducts/echoexpresschassis.html

That would get me editing 4k raw with 4k playback on a 5k monitor for $4000.

I'm reluctant to jump on board before reviews come in, so maybe I wait for V2 of the 5k imac to come out. Either way it's a great start..

Wow, can´t wait to see the Resolve performance, but this GPUs... little bit oldie, no?.

Its a Haswell Imac like the last with a GPU and screen update. Once again though they chose AMD. I wouldnt expect much improvement here for Davinci or Adobe if any at all.

The 5K iMac is not a substitute for a hard core system and certainly not a killer Resolve host.

I plan to get one anyway as it will provide me with a hi-res display that should playback ProResXQ at up to 5K and be fine for proxy editing in FCPX and hopefully PremPro. Thanks to USB3 & TB2 I/O it should also be great for moving/copying large files quickly so my primary system can be dedicated to image processing/transcoding/compositing and other high compute demand tasks. Moreover, assuming they can get it sorted, we should have TB2 based networking rolled out in 2015 that could really extend the useful life of the machine - especially in workgroup situations. I'm also attracted to the high density monitor as a workspace capable of hosting software with lots of tools open, dual 1080 windows, long timeline, etc. I also like that it's reasonably portable, especially with a decent case, so it could easily go on a DIT cart or live in the production office.

So the big question for a non techno guy like me. Will this new iMac deliver similar/lesser or better performance than the "trashcan" with dragon footage for editing ?

What about the 5k Apple Monitor!!!! Anyone really want one always a fan of Apple displays

It should hold it's own against the minimum trashcan build - 4 cores/16GB RAM/D300s - but the more built up NeoMPs will out perform it substantially. FWIW, if you're just talking about straightforward creative editorial in FCPX using their proxy option it should be plenty responsive. Once they hit the streets, we can test 1/4 res playback from the R3Ds with Dragon 6K/24fps footy for when you don't have time to make proxies.

I was very excited to see this...loaded up, and with a Rocket on hand (like in a Magma or Sonnet chassis like some already mentioned) and you have 5k mobile editing display with full 4k payback on-location...all for under $4k...to my knowledge, thats a new one!

And I like new iPads too! =)

4k/5k for the masses is finally here...

No, Hell No, Fuck No, and probably not. It only has a fraction of the horsepower that the trashcan has, maybe 1/3rd or 1/4th. This new iMac is a machine intended for photography and low-end 4K video work on the level of GoPro and consumer 4K AVCHD camcorders.

I disagree.

Depends on what you need and what to do with a machine. Just because you can't transcode as fast as a trashcan (can you believe that's how we identify a computer) does't make the computer less "professional" and more targeted to "low-end 4K work".

The specs in this iMAC destroy computers I have used on films that got nominated for academy awards. That's a fact.

We all have lots of choices. Mac, Windows, Linux, trashcans, imacs, mac minis, hackintosh's, laptops, etc. etc.

Just like cameras - not everyone needs the same thing from a computer.

For me - how I personally work - I'd take the this iMac over the trashcan. But that's just me ... :)

Would someone mind listing some details on how much performance you could get out of the 5K iMac compared to the previous, non 5k, iMac. I have always owned a tower...ect...never owned an iMac. The 5K screen is pretty great. It's definitely tempting.

No doubt that the trashcan is more powerful...but its also significantly more expensive too.

I guess a deciding factor for me is Broadwell. If its a long time coming, it might be nice to add this computer to the office. If its 6 months down the road...it would make more sense to wait. Any inside info?

just because of 5K retina screen? am i wrong

i would love to buy one, but just got a new retina macbook pro and rocket x...so I'm all set... if i ever do buy a desktop it'll be the 5k iMac or trashcan pro...but with the trashcan you need to spend way more to kit it out higher end, plus still spend a lot of money on UHD or 5k monitors...sure its super powerful and way better, but at what costs? 10k without a monitor? my current system is fine for what i do on set, provided i get production to spring for fast raids

What is the likelihood of customising this mac with more RAM down the line (64gb, etc)?

It's seems that 32 is the max. Our company is ordering one this week so I can report back. Maxing it all out.
