  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

5k Retina iMac

They would have to release the new I-mac this month to even have a chance of selling enough numbers to justify a new production shortly after Broadwell is out. I could see that approved but that still is pushing it in this market especially since Haswell-E released.

sweet can't wait and at the same price too at $999 is fantastic!!!!

???

You won't be seeing a 5K iMac at that price point. The 5K panels, even at Apple's volume purchase price from the manufacturer, are more than half of that on their own. And the $999 iMac as it currently exists is a lesser 21" model with internals that are incapable of driving anything at 5K.

I think it more likely we'll see 4k iMacs at this rate, really hoping for a headless iMac/macmini pro

Can't wait what Apple's gonna show on October 16th. Really hope that it'll be the new iMac with at least 4K display. 6 days to go...

It appears that they will unveil the next-gen iMac at this upcoming event but it might not be available until next year as Apple is going to be doing a "generational change" next year with a new logo and new products. It actually would make sense to unveil the new iMac but keep it unavailable until next year when the new DisplayPort 1.3 and HDMI 2.0 are standard.

This time frame is usually focused on releases that could be "must have" tech for the Christmas season. Previewing a machine that won't ship for months is sub optimal, BUT, it would serve the purpose of compelling some folks to wait for the new hotness, rather than buy a competitor's offering. With rumors that the next gen iPads are still a few months away it's possible Apple would preview the 5K iMacs to give the press something else to focus on rather than lack of a new tablet for the holidays.

I see the logic of Eric's note about how Apple may go forward with a new iMac quickly in hopes of selling enough units before the next architecture revision to be worth tooling up, a hedge that makes even more sense if Broadwell release windows keep slipping.

One theory would be that Apple could release a new iMac right away as a chance to show off their new design direction and tout 5K Retina display tech, even if the internals are a bit long in the tooth. Going 5K on the iMac first also solves the issue of weak I/O options (HDMI1.4 or DP1.2) since its all internal. Updating the iMac form factor in the near term with a design already compliant with Broadwell requirements would also allow them to get a Broadwell based iMac to market faster when they can get the chips - can anyone say back to school 2015?!

Then they could release a standalone version of the same display, along with an even bigger display if ready, in their quest to take over the living room. I'd wager in sync with a Broadwell/PCIe3 based trashcan refresh next year when they can get the chips - not to mention integrating newer interfaces like HDMI2 and DP1.3 on both sides.

Cheers - #19

The new iMac is being shown on stage right now. It has a 5K Retina display. Apple is saying the new rig is ideal for editing 4K video but I don't know if I'd buy that. It's definitely a Photographer rig though. Intel CPU with AMD GPU. New Fusion options as well.

Wish it was 10bit but for 2499 USD, 1:1 pixel with my Scarlet (and soon EPIC) is welcome at my studio ;)

I guess this means we'll get a 5K Apple display next year if they haven't decided to jump out of that particular ring.

Interesting specs, they actually have a semi-decent GPU in the thing. With the non-announcement in the Macbook Air line and the hardware push on the 5K iMac with it's 4GHz i7, I'm thinking that Intel is still facing considerable delays with Broadwell.

It's about damn time they updated the mini. Like the old mini, these new ones are sure to make damn good little appliance servers and SAN nodes. Too bad they don't have a discrete GPU option for them, would make a killer SteamBox. ;)

Jeff can you hypothesise on how good it will be for Red 6k footage. I know you have not seen it but do you think it will be any good?

Maybe.

They have to release 'Thunderbolt 3 / Display Port 1.3' to support the bandwidth of driving an external retina display. So there has to be a whole slew of new hardware to support it before it'll be a reality.

Give me many CPU cores and an upgradeable GPU, many PCI slots. Give me great heat dissipation in a nice, big box. Using an iMac for video post is plain old idiotic. So basically I agree with you.

Looks like ~$4K Maxed out if you BTO and toss in your own 32GB Ram. Which likely compares favorably to the 6 Core nMP with D500's. I wonder if Target Display mode off the Mac Pro would resort to UHD resolutions and still drive the monitor since TB2 can't support 5K.

At that price though, you have an X99 system with a 5960X and your choice of a sub $1K 4K display for comparison.

Now, $1200 for a Mac Mini with 256GB PCIe SSD, 3Ghz isn't bad. Wish it had discrete graphics option
