  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

5K HDR Test

This is a very fun process with the results looking extremely nice. Love this Camera and what it can do! Working with Tim is always a great experience. Nice work!

Some may not like it (because of the tonemapping thing and stuff), but I for one adore this... It must be glorious in 5K, hell even 2K!

@ Vadim
The client is a big fan of photography and was very educated with what our camera could do. This process may not hit broadcast but it was a challenge to find a solid workflow and the results are what we wanted to achieve. It is fun to open up the creative canvas and go beyond the norm. Thanks for checking it out.

care to share/discuss this 5-step process you're trying to develop?

My guess is they exported the A and X tracks separately into tiff sequences. Then they moved them into After Effects for color correction purposes. Then they exported the combined tracks into Photoshop as a tiff sequence, where Photoshop then batch applied the Photomatix tonemapping effect. They probably brought it back into After Effects to conform into a quicktime movie.

HDRx was used, set to 3 stops.

@Justin Kirchhoff

Yes, we exported A and X tracks separately as tiff sequences from CineX. Then we used After Effects and other tonemapping effects and software to create the look we wanted and then recompiled them back together. It only works with footage with dramatic differences in the shadow and highlight areas. Other test have not had as dramatic results as this, but it is a process that works. There is some ghosting in some of the images, but the tech is available. This was just one way of many to utilize the HDRx features of the truly amazing camera. You just have to have connect the dots and see what works.

I figured you used the above techniques. I did a similar workflow a year ago with a music video I shot. Got some flicker in the images but I love the look it achieved.

Not sure why there a need to come up with a rube goldberg concoction to do that. You can easily achieve the same result even with FREE software- Resolve Lite.
I did it 9 months ago without resorting to a complicated workflow. The material I'd used wasn't quite the same quality, nevertheless, the same principal applies.
