Phil, I'm a Scarlet MX owner. Have had it since 2013. It's shot music vids, ads, Corporates and shorts. It's my workhorse. For what I do I don't need (but want) improved color, more DR, less IR contamination, better sensitivity, more resolution (5k, don't need 6k). But what I need is better slow motion at full resolution, mainly for music videos and a lot of the doco style work which works as B-roll to interviews. Being able to shoot 4k at 50fps on the scarlet mx would do me. Alas I window down the 3k and shoot 48fps. But to be honest the way cameras depreciate and considering the Scarlet MX is still a very capable camera I'm in no rush. I'm more likely to spend the money on lights, filters and lenses. Actually looking to move from EF mount Zeiss ZE's to some form of PL mount primes. If the raven can't do PL mount I probably wont look at it and I'm not keen on moving down from super 35, love that format. But who knows I'll wait and see what the raven can do.... Lol, short answer I'd more likely look at the Scarlet or Epic Dragon. As far as weapon goes I do not need 8k let alone 6k for what I do. So Scarlet Dragon makes the most sense. Shame I can't upgrade anymore I'm just in no rush. Might pick a used one up next year. At the end of the day the camera is just one (very important) ingredient in creating great motion pictures.

That's sounds like the right mindset and a very realistic plan considering where things are at now. I mean Scarlet Dragon is nearly exactly what you are describing in many ways. Epic Dragon will get you "more" as well.

We've seen Raven with the fixed Canon EF mount, but if I was a betting man (I am a betting man), I'd bet RED will likely also release a fixed PL mount of some sort. Those are pretty much the most popular mounts used overall when you take everything into consideration. I'm very curious which OLPF will be in there, but I think the newest Dragon Standard might fit most users needs, though I truly need to test that bad boy out when I can. My main OLPF whip is the Skin Tone - Highlight OLPF with Dragon overall.

If they bring out a PL version that will be very interesting, especially if it's lighter/smaller than a Scarlet Dragon. But being able to switch to EF mount for run'n'gun work with EF zooms would also have me leaning towards Scarlet Dragon. (being able to shoot EF and PL would be ideal... and what the dragons already offer)

I find it interesting that people are still going over "options" about things that have already been confirmed:

It's an EF-mount (look at the picture!!, plus Jarred said it electronically controls the Canon lenses), it's a Dragon sensor that is 20.48mm wide (Jarred has said this too), which means it's exactly 4096px wide. We don't know the height for sure, but if you look at the picture you can basically see that it's 2160px based on ratio.

This and this. I guess people will continue to dream until the official announcement in 2 days. My real question is at what compression is the Raven going to be able to shoot 120fps? I might buy into Raven as a back up to my Scarlet Dragon, and for high speed. As much as I'd love it, I dont think the Scarlet D will see any added fps at 4k.

So if the Raven has a Canon mount with an almost APS-C sized sensor, what would be a good lens set to start with??

If you are looking for a "normal" focal length I'd say something in the 25, 28, or 35mm range for a prime depending on your taste.

I'm thinking the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 might be a good lens to have.

And Canon's new 11-24 f4 (mostly getting rave reviews) will allow for pretty epic (no pun intended) images even with the crop.

Can RED think of adding M43 mount as an option? Since the Crop of this camera will be around the same of a GH2 in video mode. That Will make a lot of sense. We can use a Speed Booster and adapt all lenses we can imagine. EF with that crop is limiting.... Like the first BMCC... People just prefer the m43 mount version.

That's what a lot of us are asking for "a M43 mount that allows the use of a Speedboster", and i know Red listen to their customers..

Honestly, all my questions about "should i buy this Raven? Now or should i wait? Blablabla..." all that questions would be killed by a M43 mount, because with this mount, you have no reason not to buy a Raven, truly ...

Just a curious question for Epic and Scarlet Mysterium-X shooters out there. With Raven, Scarlet Dragon, Epic Dragon, and the various flavors of Weapon now all "existing" what sort of path would be most interesting to you at this point?

I don't know if RED will ever re-implement the Dragon upgrade program offered for some time, but I am curious to what most Mysterium-X shooters would be looking for now knowing what RED has up their sleeves.

Cameras do indeed lose value over time, that's part of the industry sadly. However, what is good news is no RED camera to date has been made obsolete. Literally every camera model released is out there shooting 4K and 4K+ motion pictures. That in itself "adds value".

Hey Phil,

the thing is I love my MX Scarlet and it still makes amazing images but over here in Hong Kong everyone has been asking for Epic and now more and more for Dragon. And just because it's the more expensive model. It's totally a perception game which makes me mad. I don't really need it but the market demands it. Do or die so to speak :(

I get that some higher end productions may need high fps on 4k+ but most of them don't... so for me to upgrade is really a business decision at this point. My Scarlet doesn't get hired as much as it used to.

I would settle the Scarlet as a camera in the midrange market for medium to high end docus, promos, corporate stuff. Unfortunately it seems like this market is dying... it's either cheap cheap super low budget or super high budget.

I will definitely wait for the detailed announcement on Friday. If I can upgrade and "exchange" MX to Raven brains without the need to buy all the accessories again then I probably will just do that.

As for the Dragon upgrade path from what I understand from Red is that most people have upgraded their MX cameras now and the demand is lower so the cost to do the upgrade now would be higher than before and also they needed to clear the assembly lines for the new cameras (Weapon... and now Raven it seems). So.. not very optimistic Dragon upgrade will return.

I would bow my head to Red if they did a trade in for Scarlet MX users for a Raven, sure they can sell them BT, wouldn't be the first time they had done that and would make a lot of MX users happy. :)

Oh and I totally vote for a m4/3 mount option. That would be a perfect solution. Easily adaptable and lots of great native 4/3 glass out there as well!!!

Excuse my lack of knowledge in this area but if the Raven were to be offered in a m4/3 mount flavour, would the use of a metabones speedbooster allow the brain to communicate with the EF lens electronics so that we could still use Foolcontrol to control focus and stuff like that? And if so, wouldn't it be absolutely killer because of the extra stop of light you'd get and the approximatel 0.71 widening of the field of view it would offer?

Was referring to something like this...

I think it is safe to say the Speedbooster may not work with Raven (if it ever comes with a m4/3 mount). Current Speedbooster doesn't even work with all m4/3 cameras. And then the second question would be if Foolcontrol still works, in theory it's possible. Only time will tell.

Because current Speedboosters don't work with all m4/3 cameras either. As far as I remember there should be at least two versions. It's not a simply a mechanical adapter so there is a good chance Metabones may have to update the firmware of their old ones to make it compatible with newer cameras... but again, my guess is as good as yours and Raven may not ever come out with a m4/3 mount so...
