  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hey guys... I kinda dropped off here the past couple days because the suspense is just killing me and also I'm in Vermont on business.
I'm seeing reports now that Raven will be $5950. Can someone here confirm that? I didn't think a price had been announced yet.

I don't expect RAVEN to have ProRes with internal downscaling included. REDCODE RAW and downscaling isn't going to happen too.

We don't know about the supported resolutions, but it's unlikely that RAVEN shoots solely 4k. So, like with any other RED, RAVEN will probably shoot lower resolutions too. Just keep in mind, FullHD will be cropped = smaller used sensor size (same as with current DRAGON cameras).

However, i would suggest to shoot 4k/3k for fine HD-delivery (and some room for stabilization and reframing). Just dial-in some higher compression to get the runtime. I would only dial in cropped resolutions if i need the fps or lower compression, otherwise always shoot max resolution.

Shooting RED at 2k for FullHD-delivery isn't giving you the very best results - but it works when needed.

+1 on that.

Let me use it with my Odyssey 7Q for 4k or downscaled HD Pro Res and I will be happy as a pig in poo.

as a scalet MX user will there be any update of the slowmo function if the new cheaper raven can do 120 FPS @ 4K?

5950 aint bad but I'm sure it will need plenty on top to get it going. It's going to make RED accessible to more people (who don't want to buy an outdated MX). I wonder if we'll see the cameras with the old epic/scarlet bodies drop in price next year.

v-mount batteries + fool control for win!! 240GB Mini mag to shoot all day (plus that size media card will work well with the epic dragon) pretty much all you need to get started. save up for 4.7 REDTOUCH and cage elements!

Selling my GH4 kit, Paralinx double reciever system, RED ROCKET in sonnet thunderbolt chassis, and Remote follow focus!! pm me @@

How much smaller is the Raven sensor compared to Scarlet MX? I know the Raven is in between M4/3 and S35...I can't recall how much bigger the Scarlet MX sensor size is.

Everything looks great with this cam....if it were S35 I would jump on it without question. A little concerned about the sensor size though.

Thoughts?

Because current Speedboosters don't work with all m4/3 cameras either. As far as I remember there should be at least two versions. It's not a simply a mechanical adapter so there is a good chance Metabones may have to update the firmware of their old ones to make it compatible with newer cameras... but again, my guess is as good as yours and Raven may not ever come out with a m4/3 mount so...

Speedboosters are purely mechanical adapters. There are three sorts: one for APS-C to full frame, one for M4/3 to APS-C, and one for Blackmagic Pocket Camera to APS-C.

With Raven, if you could use a Speedbooster (which you won't be able to), the M4/3 to APS-C might work. Otherwise Metabones could create a M4/3 version with a larger image circle.

Thank you, Andy,

Like I said I've been flying under the radar this week and just missed it I guess. I'm so excited to join the Red family soon!!!!

No problem. You should have a blast - Raven sounds great.

Sadly, for me, I don't think it'll work. My thought was to use as a B-cam to my Epic Dragon for a project next year - but the lack of PL (or M43) means it won't work for me (as I'll be using Anamorphic PL glass). So I'm stuck with 'old Red' tech for now ;)

Can't you get an adaptor or are the ones available too cheap and don't work properly?

I haven't seen a PL to Canon adapter that I'd trust... and certainly not with Ana's (not the lightest of lenses).

The mere mention of a speedbooster / MFT mount on a RED brain gives me the willies. On more than a few occasions they have either malfunctioned or completely died on set, and in extreme cold weather become frozen onto the lens mount, one headache after another. Own a lot of EF glass & gave it one last attempt with my A7r ii(even with the non-speedbooster adapters) but it just seemed like a band-aid over a knife wound. So much in fact I just gave up and bought a few FE primes(which are fantastic btw).

The whole idea of FF35 as the reference is that their were hundreds of millions of cameras made that used FF35 as the frame size and 10s of millions of people that used FF35 cameras with interchangeable lenses where they had some idea of what focal lengths represented in terms of FOV.

But I agree that crop factor has become more confusing than useful - particularly since it has been almost fifteen years since digital SLRs have taken over and APS-C has actually been more common than Full Frame. Most newcomers don't have that FF35 reference any more.

It's true when it comes to still photography.
When it comes to motion pictures, Super 35 has been the standard for a really long time. And DP's (not still photographers) have the FOV of S35 lenses burned into their brains and retinas.
Yes, they have sold millions of cameras in FF35, but those are stills cameras. And later, with digital, those Stills cameras started to do video on the side. But they have never been the standard in motion picture.
Stills - FF35
Motion Picture (Cinema) - S35

Sure but the crop factor is meant to be a descriptor that most should be able to understand, hence the comparison to the most common format across all of photography. Now that cameras are capable of doing many types of shooting, isn't it the right time more than ever for a single means of comparison?

If it is confusing for people now think of how much more difficult it would be if a second crop factor were also commonly used.
