  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

While I agree generally in terms of the form and function of internal NDs, they do indeed provide optical concerns relating to specific focal lengths/lenses and the optical path. While it's convenient, I don't fully feel it's exactly the right solution just yet overall. It's similar to the Variable ND concept really. On paper it's a amazing, but in practice it can effect your image quality, sometimes severely. The weird thing is even the Alexa Mini experiences issues at ND 1.2 and 2.1 on the color and optical side of things.

I'm cool if RED ever decides to include internal NDs for sure (if they do I'll be using clear a LOT), but I know of one electronic solution that "nobody" is doing yet that is possibly the overall "right" solution. I want to see RED focus on that front to see if they can implement it.

I want that dimmable LCD Screen from the FS5. Well if it´s not ruining colors, which doesn´t matter on the Sony because Sony and color is a mess anyway.

I do feel that the Raven will have much better status if it can do 120fps (or at least 60fps) without any type of crop.

I think the massive cropping on the Scarlet, even at 60fps, really hurt the cameras perception.

Colors on Sony F55 and F65 are great. On par with Dragon and Alexa.
Can't tell about the other newer Sonys (but the older were awful indeed), but on these two, they did an awesome job. Even Jim and Jarred congrat them when they came out.

Well Raven has no crop if I may say. Cropping would mean to mean we can record 6k or 5k, and crop to have 120fps.
We can't, the max it can record is 4k at 120. The actual crop would be 3k and 2k which, I hope, nobody will use. Red should even delete these option from the menu.
It has to be idiotproof if it's priced so low. One resolution, 4k, in 4k flavor (2:1, 16:9, WS, HD, like Scarlet) and nothing else.

To use the crop word. The real cropping from a 6k sensor to 4k is already the limit to have decent definition. Below, I can't focus, it look soft in the monitor

More accurately, Jim and Jarred complimented Sony on the F65 only.

Wonder if it maintains the Epic-Dragon FPS down the crops -- 3k, 2k, etc. Also intrigued about Ana and WS modes. Also intrigued about power consumption and prores (though I think that's what allowed them to reduce the weight)... Speaking of which, I'd love to see a "substantial" weight reduction (sub-3lbs?), though something tells me it's not much less.

If its a dragon 6k sensor with a maximum of 4k im abit worried. On mx 4k looks really good and the 3k is fine. But i would never shoot 3k if im not totaly forced to (which is closed to never). Isnt 4k on a dragon sensor to much cropped sensor for everyday use? 5k im sure would look great everyday.

It is a smaller Dragon-Sensor.

Lots of you got that right already.. it is a real Dragon sensor with real Dragon Pixels. So 20.48mm wide, a bit shy of Academy 35mm and APS-C. All your APS-C / S35 lenses should cover.

While it is possible that RED will offer a "loyalty" discount of some kind for Raven purchasers who already own other RED cams, I just don't see enough markup in the Raven for that to be substantial. I would be very surprised to see any kind of trade-in program, in part because I doubt there are very many components in the older cams that can be reused.

It's my perception that the sensor itself is the biggest hard cost RED has in producing Dragon equipped cameras. I cite the Epic to Weapon trade-in program as an indicator. I also posted earlier that I expected the Raven to be the beneficiary of the yield realities of making the 8K Dragon sensor. I'm still hoping the Raven will have a 4096 by 4096 chip to support portrait capture without rotating the body and to facilitate stills re-framing.

Perhaps it will be 4096 by 2048, that would allow them to get many more cuts out of the 8K chips that may have only one or two bad pixels. Would also keep their costs down and perhaps make it easier to achieve 4K@120fps without requiring massive internal processing muscle.

Just so everyone can see the size.
I feel the question is not wether if it's a dragon-technology sensor (but smaller), or the current dragon sensor (but cropped/crippled to fit small body size)
Too bad it's not 4,5k-25p though, or maybe with the lookaround ?

FWIW, I predict REDCODE only on a stock Raven. Unless I've been mis-informed, it takes quite a bit of horsepower to decode, scale and author high quality ProRes. Somehow that doesn't seem to jibe with smaller, lighter and lower cost.

As I have noted previously, I do see a potential for the Raven to host a RED or 3rd party add-on that does ProRes on the fly - but unless creating those ProRes files is far more trivial than I have been led to believe, I just don't see it happening internally.

What I'd love Raven to be in a nutshell is a C300 with a RED brain and raw output. I agree built in ND's are perhaps not a perfect solution optically BUT they're used on virtually every broadcast tv camera for good reason.

For filming docs, I'll always take simplicity & ease of use over a camera that may be optically superior but is technically challenging in the field. In the moment I need a camera that helps me get what I need - this was the reason we sold our Epic. It was just the wrong camera for filming ob docs. Hoping Raven may be a solution though!

We need long battery life and efficient codecs that can record on affordable media.

I predict you are wrong on several key points.
