This should be designated a no-bitch zone. Little Raven is going to kick ass.

I agree that it's going to kick ass, and if it's ready-to-shoot price point is basically the same or under as a C300 Mark 2 (and it appears to be) then Red is disrupting the living hell out of the market.

My last post was less of a bitch session and more of a lamentation. I was simply expressing my deep sorrow that this may still end up being above my price range. Red doesn't owe me anything, of course, nor could they realistically bring their stellar gear down to my tiny budget.

All-in-all, this is looking to be a great camera that'll be a superb fit for a lot of people. Here's hoping I can be one of them!

I promised myself not to consult Reduser until friday, i honored my words 3 days only.. But damn, a lot happened during these last 3 days, i missed some craziness !

I have 3 questions:

-Will a Metabones speed booster be an option? It would be great to have a crop factor more "interesting" than 1.87 ..

-To all Red one mx users, are you planning to sell? I feel like this Raven can be a serious replacement, what do you guys think?

-Will it have a 4kws mode?

Again, if the crop factor was a little bit more "interesting", this Raven would be a crazy fu**ck'n cam' ...

Oh, to all "Lens engineers", is there a difference between let's say a sensor that already have a 1.5 crop factor and a 1.5 crop factor obtained with a speed booster? Probably in term of Depth of field or Image quality?

I wonder what will happen with the Scarlet MX. Will the price drop to bellow Raven? the specs are definitely bellow, or will RED discontinue it?

Scarlet Dragon can record 5K motion and shoot 6K stills. It's not exactly "below".

Keep in mind there are alternatives to RED's power options that will give you longer record times for a cheaper price. I'm getting $10,529 by losing RED's power offerings, doubling up on the 120GB Mini-mag and using WC power attachment options and 2 160 Wh (versus one 89 Wh) Globalmediapro V-mount batteries w/charger.

It's $10,229 if you get one 240 GB Mini-mag instead of two 120GB.

I think he means the original scarlet MX, since you can still currently purchase new from the store.
I still have my Scarlet MX , it is still such a solid performer and produces great images, but if the Raven can use most of my accessories/modules it may be worth the small upgrade..

Scarlet Dragon can only do 60fps at 4k... At what compression ratio? Maybe they'll allow it to do 6k/24fps?? I mean, even it's upgrade was more than double the cost of Raven in the spring.

Scarlet-MX brains are going to be given away... Really would have loved to see 4.5k WS/24fps come to Scarlet-X, but I think Raven is the last nail in that possibility.

Well, but that's like me saying that if you're serious about images you shoot 65mm film only.

XLR's and a decent audio recording will make the cam useable for a lot of oneman bands.

A-box like solutions work well, but it adds hazzle.

XLR's straight in the box. I can see the use of that a lot.

I agree about the reasonable expectation of decent sound. I have an A-Box and use it. But, using a separate sound recording device all adds flexibility. You can do anything from an H1 on camera to a top end Sound Devices box, depending on your needs for a particular project.

I have found myself thinking about this lot lately and realize it's pretty hard to put the best sound recorder into the best image recording device and offer it up for a reasonable price. So, assuming compromises are to be made, it seems that an image recording device will prioritize images. Which means that the sound system will take a back seat.

XLRs would be great, but they are bulky. The internal sound of the RED cameras is adequate. I just don't think adding XLRs inside the camera is a good trade-off. My opinion, of course. Especially since, as you point out, there is the A-Box.

Ah. Thank you. Missed the MX there.

That is a good question indeed about it being discontinued or not.

Well, it shoots 5k stills and has a slightly bigger sensor @4k. But i a gree, it's time is running up and it won't easy to sell once RAVEN hits the market. I wouldn't be surprised if RED starts to fire-sale MX bodies in the nearer future and drops the price of Scarlet/D a bit.

P.S.: and/or with that glitched Scarlet/MX in mind, maybe we will see some updates that push the limits of Scarlets (both MX and Dragon) a bit? ;)

I'd really love to see something in the Raven build thats in the middle of the Weapon and Raven. Basically a Weapon Dragon in the Raven body fixed lens mount and all. That would be my dream! Having 5K and 6K while saving weight and a bit of $$ would be amazing! Plus I feel like the gap from $6,000 to $34,500 is pretty huge. Makes me think we'll see something in the middle at some point.

240GB Mini-mag records 63 minutes of 4k 5:1 ( $1400 / each ) x6
RED Brick provides 120 minutes of run time ( $450 / each) x4
==============================================
In batteries and media alone your looking at $10k for one days shoot

I can (and do, occaionally...) easily shoot at 4k on my existing SCARLET using 2x 256 mags and 3x brick batteries, if I am just shooting personal or indie projects or low-budget commercial, so your estimates are way off the mark for an entry-level package.

If I am shooting a project which requires that much media and that many bricks, it is strictly a higher end professional gig. And if you are shooting those projects, then you will be able to invest in the proper amount of gear and shouldn't sweat it.

reality check comin' atcha.....

My curiosity about all the is whether there will be, as someone asked earlier, something between Raven ($6K) and Weapon Mg ($34.5K) in the DSMC2 body style, to which Scarlet & Epic Dragon owners can upgrade. The current upgrade path from my S-Dragon to Weapon would be nearly $30K. And yet, I am not at all sure I want to go "back" to a smaller 4K sensor with fixed lens mount , etc.

RED has always been good about this stuff and I am pretty confident there will be options. Not so much worried as curious. Jarred did promise that "indie-types" would not be forgotten. Raven certainly fills the bill there but, hopefully, current S-Dragon owners will get some love, too.

Edit: (Looks like Jeffrey beat me to it.)

It would be nice to see an upgrade path from Scarlet MX to Raven, even if it was a partial trade in.

Those estimates were converted directly from my current setup(conservatively), so I consider that to be an entry-level package. If your able to get by with 2.5 hours of media that's great, but wouldn't cut it for the stuff I do. Even with a DIT there isn't much of a buffer there. Same with batteries, when I travel on multi-day shoots the last thing I want to worry about is conserving power.

Right back atcha sunshine :)

Me, I'm sure. No way. The Raven is good for getting an entry level RED and a great B Cam but there's too much to give up on the Scarlet Dragon to consider it.

This is pretty amazing.

Seems like the biggest loser is the Canon C300 Mark II ($16K + accessories = $20K).

For $20K, you can get an FS7 for doc / run and gun - built in NDs, non-RAW codec, small and long lasting batteries. Get the Raven for higher end stuff, all around the same price as the C300 II, which makes zero sense at this point.

RED is giving away a 4K camera to get shooters into a body that uses current (and future?) modules and accessories... It's the gateway drug to a RED addiction.

FS5 is still half the price and with a viewfinder... *yawn*

Which shoots "only" UHD 4K at up to 30p. Raven shoots 4K at up to 120fps.

It would be nice to see an upgrade path from Scarlet MX to Raven, even if it was a partial trade in.

The Scarlet MX to Dragon upgrades ended some time ago, but I don't truly think RED can provide an upgrade path on a body this inexpensive. It's actually impressive a company of RED's size can pull off a camera like Raven at all. Though, anything is possible at this point.
