  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

#4K4ALL

Assuming this is the next Scarlet (in a Weapon body and Dragon sensor), more than $5k for the brain probably won't gain marketshare (just get people who weren't willing to upgrade their Scarlets for $9500). Plus there are plenty of really strong 4k/raw options available around that price that are fully loaded out of the box (14+stops, ND built-in, raw/encoded simultaneously, lightweight, low-energy, etc.) Again, the brain could be free, but when you still to have to buy $5k worth of accessories it's a lot less enticing (whereas other cameras use inexpensive media and small batteries that last 4 hours).

To be honest, 4k Dragon is a smaller sensor than 4k MX, and ultimately boils down to less-than-4k debayer, so I'm hoping for ~4.5k+ 2:1 Dragon at 60fps... Was also hoping for a ~3.5lbs body/~5lbs shootable, but that won't happen, as v-mounts are ~1.5-2lbs, plus lens, plus monitor... ends up being 7.5lbs, which is still quite heavy... If its less modular, they should be able to make it lighter, right? (still don't understand how making it a fixed mount is somehow cheaper to produce, though...)

Just posted my idea in the Raven thread...

So, my best guess:

- All in one control (sidewinder panel) with a small LCD for reviewing (so, no need for monitoring solutions).
- Optional extras (like a wifi or video sender - which would make sense fo using the Weapon system as a base, as it's already part of the specs).
- Raw (maybe proxies too).
- Fixed lens (ala Go-Pro and others)

This will not step on any of the other cameras in Red's lineup.

I think Andy's comment so far makes the most since Jarred has spent a lot of time lately posting specifically about drones.

**EDIT* Andy beat me to it....

Well, Ravens fly - so I think the notion of a unit targeted at the Drone market is probably where this will end up. Pretty much sure that's the basis of Jarred's name choice.

I suspect an all-in one unit (sidewinder style control interface and maybe with an additional small review monitor) - sort of a Red Go-Pro :)

Think it'll be fixed lens too... essentially (if it's price is right), it's the camera we'll all buy as a drone/b-camera/action cam... knowing that we don't have any issues with different production pipes (as we're still n RAW). A little like the the way Arri designed the Alexa mini in order to pick at the use of Red's as B-Cams/drone units.

So, my best guess:

If the price is cheap, the Raven will 'fly' off the shelves... ahem! LOL

This camera may indeed be the new Scarlet Dragon. Ie the Raven Dragon. Similar specs.

5K 48fps?

But that would mean brain may be more in the $10-15k range.

Thanks John. As I just added here, it will also not bite into the current Red lineup... there'd be sooo many unhappy owners if something just appeared and crapped over the non Weapon systems...

If I guessed right, think Jarred will give me a freebie Raven? LOL!

Agreed.... Especially with the time sensitive upgrades and what have you, if something happened to show up that would in essence make something 3rd or 4th tier I think it would upset a lot of people. Either way, it's awesome to see all of the updates and just witness where this is all going. If it is a drone cam, that's pretty incredible. A drone paired with an affordable RED would be a great scenario.

1. if this is a drone specific camera then I don't think they would write "4k 4 all" since "4 all" since the small drone demographic is not "all."

2. Dragons fly too not just Ravens, and Dragon is not a drone camera.

3. The 4k raw drone some people said Jarred was posting about is the new Zenmuse X5R that flies on the Dji Inspire and to my knowledge has nothing to do with Red cameras

There was few unhappy owners when RED cut EPICs price in half without any notice. RED is not scared to make big changes.

I think people may be interpreting 4K4ALL a little too literally. I'm not sure RED are competing with A7 or Blackmagic. They are more likely trying to give RED customers an alternative to C300 MK2 and FS7, within the Weapon family.

Specs/price will most likely correspond to past and previous SCARLET releases.

Which means a brain anywhere btw $7-15K depending on specs (and there may be several tiers for all we know).

Well either way I'm really excited right now over 2 photos and a hash-tag. I'm on board. I want a Red so badly I can taste it. I'm excited about, hopefully, the potential to become part of the Red family sooner than expected.

My guess is this could be budget Scarlet Dragon specs in Weapon form. So maybe:

5K 30, 4K 48fps
No Prores

$10k? Shooting kit $15k?

$10K for a brain doesn't sound like a democratizing price that 4ALL engenders. Perhaps 4ALL simply sounded better than 4SOME.

That hashtag could be a very well thought out piece of PR....Or.....Perhaps it just rhymed and seemed like a fun facebook post after a beer.

my question exactly. Really has to be greater than 4K capture to distinguish from the flood of prosumer 4K cameras (including BM). Would be really nive if there was hdmi 2 - 4k 60fps for on set preview. SDI is great for broadcast, but bit expensive for preview.

True. But the brain may also be $7K. We just don't know right now. And my guess is this camera maybe 5K resolution (and therefore resolving highquality 4K "for all").

RED moved beyond 4K a long time ago. This camera may well be a budget Scarlet Dragon in Weapon's clothing at Scarlet MX prices.

Ie: $7,950 for RED Raven Brain, 5K Dragon Sensor, 30p at 5K, 48fps at 4K, 60fps at 3K. No prores. Weapon Body. Lightweight. Drone friendly.

Full kit could be $10-12K.

I suppose.

To be perfectly honest, I'm starting to get a little callous towards these RED leaks/teases... Everyone projects what they specifically want/need on to their speculation (at a price they can readily afford), and ultimately everyone ends up disappointed.

"#4K4ALL" is kinda bunk as it could imply quite a few different things (4k for all types of shooting -- studio, production, gimbal/drone, high speed? 4k for all types of budgets - entry, medium, high-end, high-speed?)... The thing is 4k isn't enough resolution to be considered a mid-to-high-end any more (especially as far as RED is concerned) and you can already easily fly a Weapon 6k/8k with a jetpack, so I doubt it's a camera geared to drones/gimbals... It seems to lean towards "4k for all who couldn't afford at $15k Scarlet package", which to me is ~$5k or less (given that you'll be dropping double that for it to be shootable).

It does appear to be an affordable Scarlet Dragon, in Weapon's clothing. Im guessing somewhere btw Scarlet MX and Scarlet Dargon prices, and with corresponding level of features.

But in Weapon's clothing, it may weigh less than current Scarlets, which is good for drones/gimbals.

Smaller sensor camera.
maybe 4/3". or better yet 16mm size. For drones, gimbles, crash cam..... 4.5k raw recording and pro-rez.
There is a need for serious cinema cameras in smaller form factor. A lot of great 16mm lenses out there ready to be used.
More depth of field can be a bonus, we forget that these days.
6-8k.

I think that some people are pretty wrong about what this Raven Camera is:

- Plastic body / Fixed lens / Prores / Mx sensor / Etc...

COME ON PEOPLE !!! In the first photo Jarred shared we clearly see the little circle under the mount stating "Cinema" ( for Red cinema Camera)..

This camera is for sure:

-Aluminium body : the new 4'6" monitor has the same skin, and Red is about "quality" no matter the price

- Will shoot Red Raw: Red mini mag for Red raw files, plus it is a "Red camera", they strongly believe in their Raw science and so do we..

- Will have a DRAGON sensor : Red always look forward, not behind them

- Will shoot 4k at 30 fps max : that's the logic for me

- Will be priced under 10k $ : That's my hope

The new Red Raven is a Cinema Camera, not a video toy..

My gut tells me it will be 5K sensor...but at 30fps.

This will give the RAVEN a massive leg up on the competition (who are all 4K), and is something easy for RED todo (and keeps camera s35).

As Mendes said, RED generally don't look backward. I don't think they believe 4K is enough anymore (for acquisition).

My gut tells me 5K 30fps. $7,950/brain (current Scarlet MX brain cost).
