I really don't want to sound like an old fart (after all I'm only 30) & I know this is REDUSER where we pixel peep and push the RED guys to deliver the very best...but still...I remember cutting my teeth on S16mm and 1-2/3" HDV & P2 cameras all too well. We managed to fight ultra deep depth of field & non existent latitudes. I think I still have PTSD from keying interlaced MPEG2 footage shot on terrible blue screen. I know the bar has been raised considerably since then and we should demand better and faster results but when I hear people worried about how a 4K (almost) APS-C sized sensor camera that shoots RAW with over 13 stops latitude can make cinematic images I can only come to 2 conclusions.

1. These people suffer from gear lust and they should worry more about perfecting their craft.

2. I must be turning into this guy:

Or film where you shot... and hoped that what came back from the lab the next day worked.

These days it's *almost* too easy.

We've shot spots @ 2K on Scarlet MX that I thought were fun (with s16 zoom). 4K Dragon is more than enough!

To quote Mark Pederson, he once said he'd take 4K Dragon over 5K MX.

And I have to admit, I kind of agree.

So, put that way...a RAVEN could certainly compete with an EPIC MX (which is saying A LOT).

Interesting Nick, if you all had the choice, which camera would you pick between the Epic Mx and the Raven and why?

I honestly don't know. Depends on RAVEN's compression settings to be honest. If they are pretty reasonable, then most likely RAVEN.

My gut tells me any Dragon owner looking for a B-CAM just found one in RAVEN.

The $5000 credit Dragon owners get for upgrading to Weapon could easily be applied to a RAVEN B-Cam, if you think about...

I actually wonder if that's part of RED's calculations somewhere...

EDIT: Though Epix MX's larger sensor is certainly a unique selling point...

Camera companies really only "lock" folks into their MEDIA and sometimes EVFs. And sure, in RED's case if you want touchscreen control - you need to use a RED touchscreen monitor - but there are other control options now for RED cameras - so, you can actually just use a SmallHD SIDEFINDER + FoolControl or Switchblade if you want.

Almost nobody builds out an ARRI camera with only ARRI AKS, or a SONY camera with only SONY ASK, etc. etc. - and pretty much NOBODY builds out a RED camera with only RED AKS. There are many, many options in quality and price and function. And MUCH more coming.

LOTS of companies making AKS at all kinds of pricepoints. I was SHOCKED at how much TILTA has upped their game at IBC. For Chinease company that has NO CLUE how to sell to the US market - they are now making some slick stuff - VERY, VERY low price point.

I would not worry one moment about affordable AKS.

I there a webpage with the RED third party AKS add ons?

This might be heresy around here but I kind of feel the same way regarding lenses. There are sooo many really affordable lenses that are fast, super sharp, cover large image circles, have fantastic modern coatings and relatively neutral colour rendition. So many are priced to buy as well with the major tradeoff being either electronic focus/iris controls or super durable metal housing. If you, your focus puller and the colourist have an inkling of what they're doing, you'll be fine 90% of the time. For those times that you're not? Then you have a client who expects the very best, go rent a set of lenses...that should be in the budget anyway. I'm not trying to go off topic here, this situation just reminds me of people demanding t0.5 FF35MM cine zooms for Samyang prices.

Anyways, I'm very excited by the RAVEN. 120fps 4K .R3Ds for <$10K? Yummy. There are examples of people on these boards who started with barebones lower end offerings from RED and as their career progressed they've built/traded up their gear. Don't worry about getting the perfect all in one kit to start off with. Get what you can afford and improve your craft with it.

Can someone in the US tell us, in how many hours from now we can expect sth from RED? I'm always getting confused if it will be ahead or behind our time. Right now its almost 11pm on Thursday where I live. Thanks!

I have small aerial video service in Belgrade, Serbia, but working all over the World. Mostly I was working with GH3/GH4 but since last year I've received many inquiries for aerials with Red cameras.
I made big octocopter for heavy cameras and already worked for few mid/high budget movies this year with rented Scarlet and Scarlet Dragon.
Since there's no many rentals who are happy to rent their Red cameras for aerial work I decided it's time to buy some well cared Red for me. For a few moths I'm following posts at Marketplace but now I think my search is over.
Big welcome for Red Raven in our "hangar" :)

When I first launched Small Giant 2 years ago, we shot this spot 2K on a Scarlet MX. Super fun, super simple. We shot other spots 4K and 3K, but we were using a s16 zoom, so this one was 2K:

I can't even BEGIN to tell you how blown away I am RED is releasing a 4K Dragon at the RAVEN price range!!!

I think RAVEN may end up being one of RED's more defining and DISRUPTIVE decisions...

I almost ENVY those who get to join the RED family...for the first time...with a RAVEN!!

Ok, Jarred... 12:01 am - EASTERN - not a second later. I don't think we can take the suspense any longer than that. :)

Raven will be great. Something tells me that we are not finished with boring pointless slowmo footages.
Yah for more slo mo now @ 120fps. ; )

Cant help but reflect on that Scarlet fixed lens footage of the skaters in the studio in the day ( when was that ?)...I guess this time it will be hipsters sucking from jam jars whilst skating & keep'n it real.
