Problem is, Red is meant to be graded, but most Red users have no clue how to grade Red footage. The ones who do get vivid colors, no yellowy-ness, no problem.
Rob,
I believe the 4k projector at the Red film festival and the Saban theatre was a sony from Red studios.
I am fanatical about UHD and 4k . I strive to keep my images true 4K and go go great lengths by shooting with an 'E' version of the Scarlet ( no OLPF ) and applying extreme custom image processing to get clean razor sharp images simply not attainable with normal Red cameras.
The Seiki works well enough for me. Makes HD look like SD is a side effect.
But the problem is the 'people' don't seem to care about the extra sharpness of UHD. Case in point, even at the source of the images : here on Red User there is very little interest. Sample images are most often posted as 1080 or even 720P images. The Seiki monitor is only mildly successful and even then folks are playing BluRays on it and so forth. Uploads to YouTube are 99% 1080. I don't understand.
Delivery is not a problem for digital sources media. I get very nice h264 results at a BD rate of 40mbits. No grain is beautiful for compressors. Remastered old film are the difficulty, as the film purists want to preserve the 1960's grain structure. If you remove too much the bloggers crucify you. We scan and restore old films, and this is a major issue.
That's because most of us don't have a 4K display, negating the need to post full res images. If we all had a way to view them full res then I'd guarantee there would be 4K samples here. Give it some time...
OK Matt. Before I had my UHD monitors I would pan around the images on the 30" so I could still see the 4K, albeit looking through the 2560 'loupe' , if you will. It was a drag ( literally) but I could still see the center vs edge details, etc.
Those are the same type of people that would use an original Picasso as a drip pan under there truck.
