  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

4K Delivery... get ready.

Definitely the hardest part is not telling you guys all this stuff as it happens...

in some ways i wish it was still the good old days when we could share everything we were doing and the competition would just laugh at us.

Now the competition is paying attention.. and as humbly as I can say this.. it seems we are dictating some of their roadmaps.

Me too, but some times I love surprises even more, especially those coming form you guys... ;)

Can't wait to have my private screening room turn in to a 300" 4K system... ;)

These are amazing shots here Jarred - thanks for sharing.

Kind of makes you wish that there was something to connect these new REDRAY players too, you know, just to get the full viewing experience!

Heh...heh...heh...

;)

:))

I know we have been harping about 4K distribution forever... but it is about to get very real.

Now is a good time to figure out ( if you haven't already ) how to prepare, conform and finish everything important that you have shot in 4K. There are going to be alot of people very happy that they chose a camera that was ready for this whole new world of distribution.

The Consumer Electronics Association has finally laid down the UHD 4K rules for Displays... and they don't take kindly to anything below 3840 x 2160.. In fact.. they don't allow it.

4K Displays are here. and their prices are dropping every month. Soon they will be in reach of the masses.

And then there is REDRAY... the crown jewel of 4K content delivery.

Next month we start shipping 4k REDRAY players to alot of new eyeballs.. consumers and professionals alike.. and they are going to want the same thing... 4K content.

For REDRAY we have partnered with one of the most innovative content distribution companies that both content owners and viewers have ever seen...and we built it right into REDray.

Expect the official REDRAY and 4k Content Distribution network announcement along with pre-orders to happen in a couple weeks.. but I thought it was important to give you all a heads up so you can prepare.

Our Production Lines are churning.. manufacturing is ramping up.

We are ready.... are you?

Oh wow. Things just got REALLY exciting! $4k now buys you a camera that can easily be projected at 4 times the resolution of what The Avengers was shot at.
Actually 4K is twice the resolution of 2K, not four times. To double resolution, you quadruple pixel count. :-)

It is quadruple- 2K is 2048x1152 and 4K is 4096 x 2304.......assuming it uses the same size as Reds acquisition sizes and not the UHD specs.

I knew this would happen...

It's semantics.

Digital cinema resolution is measured in horizontal pixels, so 4k at 4096 is exactly twice the pixel count of 2k at 2048, so Karim is correct to say it is twice the resolution. Of course, there are quadruple the number of pixels in a 4k image than a 2k image (assuming the same aspect ratio), so one can also say there is quadruple the resolution.

Let's stop this one here - it always gets out of hand....

Wild guess, but you're not a math teacher are you?
No. But I know a few things about maths and statistics. :-)

Quadruple the number of pixels, yes.

No. It is not semantics. Is the difference between A/A+B and A/(A+B) semantic? No. It's actually very important. And the issue is not particular to digital cinema. It has to do with basic maths and/or sampling theory. Pixel increase is not proportional to resolution increase. It's a fact, even though it won't help you make better coffee. Ask Graeme Nattress. End of story. You can now continue the thread without further interruption!

Groan, it is another misnomer, that who ever you ask, still defies the law of physics. It It is a convention, not at all a fact. When in doubt use the absolute, rather than relative term (relative to that industry convention). 4k is 4 times the quantity of resolution as 2k, to say otherwise shows a deficient one dimensional character. ;)

Just another way people c.. up the world.

Color grade quality for CC work?

Hey - is that a port above the Power, Play & Status LEDs. If so, what's it for? :)

Yes, I agree, but there's always somebody with a calculator who doesn't - which is the point I completely failed to make earlier:-)

Sorry Liam. More about the conservation in general.

Bingo...super important 4k workflow dots about to be connected ;)

Thanks Red...

Nice work RED team. I love that every obstacle that's in your path you turn into a challenge and then come up with a solution.
This next step is HUGE - connecting the dots to delivery.
Let the uninformed whine and criticize - and even their abuse should roll off your backs, because really, do they have any idea of what it took?
Sorry, but they don't have a clue - which is why you need to listen, but not necessarily to pay attention.
RED's changed the dynamics of an industry and put professional tools into the hands of craftsmen who would have never had the opportunity.
For that I am grateful.

Best wishes!

I guess it depends on whether by "resolution" you mean nominal resolution or measured resolution. No matter how you slice it, there are still 4 times the pixels in 4K than there are in 2K. Since RED 4K resolves to around 3.4K and, as Jim suggests, the very best 1080P resolves to around 1.7K, it could be argued this way. One thing we can agree on, RED 4K has A LOT MORE resolution than anybody's 2K. :-)
