  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Every filmmaker has to turn the given script into his kind of filmmaking. so you´ll get one and the same film in many different styles....

Congrats, Everyone!

I wish I were there to see all the films projected and to mingle for the after party. Bet it was fun.

Big thanks to Mike and Darren for putting this on. I'm looking forward to future events for sure.

I also have to say that I like derbernnd's suggestion of one script for all, or a couple scripts for participants to pick from. That could be a good set-up for the next narrative installment of the 4KChallenge.

Anyway, next challenge... Music video... I'm eagerly awaiting the details.

I really liked your film and our two videos have been the most voted and downloaded!
We used zeiss superspeed 18/85 T1.3. About the workflow we used fcp/crimson/redcine and graded in color.
 
Just wanted to echo my congrats to everyone, and give a shout out to All Good Things and Libido, which were two of my personal favorites! I look forward to seeing more work from you guys!

It was a pleasure to have a chance to meet Mike and Darren in person; they both deserve big kudos for pulling everything together. The theater is really a nice space; I hope more people can attend the next one!

Interestingly, the projector seemed to change the color/contrast character of everyone's pieces (less saturated, less contrast, a bit of a green shift?)... did anyone else who attended notice? I wonder what kind of projector the theater has? The brightness and resolution were fantastic; there's probably just a trick to grading footage for optimzal display.

Anyhow, looking forward to the next competition! This one was a blast!

It was a great pleasure getting to meet everyone that made it out to the theatre at the downtown independent last night. We had a great first screening and are looking forward to bringing you all more competitions soon. Congratulations to every team for completing this difficult task. We hope you had as much fun as we did.

Sadly I could not attend, however I trust this picture is sufficient proof "Casting" Director/Co-Producer Kim and Editor/Co-Producer David are not strangers to having been found outstanding in their field ... :wink:
 
Hehe... Erik, that picture is udderly fitting to your comment. :)

I'm wondering how our short looked on the big screen. Wish I could've been there to see it. With all the color and gamma issues I was having, I'm not sure what to think. Tim's comments above about the projection system changing how peoples' films looked, I'm really curious now.
 
I thought the films looked great. We tried to dial in the 1080p Barco as best as possible. I didn't notice a green tint or shift and thought it was a pretty accurate projection compared to the source. Their was a slight contrast misrepresentation but overall I thought everything looked great. It's a great thing IMO to see how well RED footage looks projected even when treated in such a short time frame. I can't wait for the next film challenge!
 
4K Challenge dot com will soon be getting a face lift and more dynamic, interactive appearance and funtionality. While this is happening we are developing the details for the next few 4K Challenges.
As always, we want to hear from you, what ideas you may have to help us make 4K Challenge the competition you want it to be. Any suggestions, comments and criticisms are welcome.

think of one script for all. worldwide...this could be very interesting. I´m sure you will get a great writer for that kind of competition. Maybe one like Paul Haggis:innocent:
 
Suggestions.... Hmmm....

For a future narrative contest, I would like to see 1 maybe 2 scripts revealed at the start of the contest and participants have to pick one to use. I think it would be interesting to see how each team would approach and create a short based around the same script(s). They could be dialogue only, so as not to inhibit the ability for each group to quickly adapt what they have to use.

How about a commercial contest? Give us 48 to 72 hours to develop and deliver a :30 spot for an imaginary product or service that is revealed at the start of the contest. Maybe require both a :15 and :30 version.

Maybe a documentary project - Shoot a 3 to 5 minute doc piece about a certain thing to be revealed at the start of a contest. Categories could be something broad, so for example one category could be "automotive". I could submit a 4 minute doc piece about how newspaper is good for cleaning your car's windshield or something.

Other than making requirements that effect the script and shooting, like log lines and props to include in a narrative piece, what about defining types of shots or shot sequences? Or have a black and white or "old film look" festival. ...Just trying to think of some requirements to put emphasis on the cinematography or the editing and post side of the project. I think it would be cool to drop an FX shot requirement in there or something, but these are such short time blocks to work in. Then again, a contest to come up with the best 30 to 60 second VFX sequence shot on RED could be pretty cool.
 
Good Ideas! We will mix it up a bit with a music video competition next and then back to a film competition but i think a commercial competition would be great as well and mockumentary competition could be a lot of fun.

Question to you all - If we added more time to the competition and played with the idea of 7x2 = 14 day competition would anyone be interested in more time to finesse their films? Is this too much time for you to get uninterested or just what you have been waiting for? Just thinking ahead.
