Yesterday was Jim's birthday and few days before it was Jarred's.

I'm fresh out of birthday gift ideas, but I thought I'd upload 2 minutes of 8K footage over LA shot recently.

when that beat drop tho!!!

really awesome Phil

Awesome! However for a moment I felt like flying over Bollywood or something. Then I snapped back when Staples Center came into the frame.

Straight as an arrow, I like that. There is far to many pans in this world, everytime when flying cameras i get this urge to pan around and afterwards when looking at it I usually regret it and wished i just went straight. In that regard and many others you nailed this one. :)

Oh wow that was fantastic! Such a wonderful shot. There's nothing like illuminated cities, is there. It seems that central LA is not the kind of overcrowded dump that it might have been (Melbourne, Australia's CBD is becoming a glossy, overdeveloped shithole). Seems to be not too many tall buildings. Yes, they're all boring but this isn't the '60s anymore, sadly.

I watched this in HD as that's as good as I can get, but it looked terrific and impressive anyway. I must say that I turned off the audio because quite frankly I don't want to hear music every time I watch cool footage. I would have preferred ambient noise, or smooth relaxing jazz at most, but that's just me.

So did you base exposure on a table (i.e. time of day, time of year) or did you measure it? I'm assuming the former.

IMO the future of cinema is full IMAX, and RED is perfectly positioned for it. Stereoscope is dead and nobody cares, which in one way is a shame, only because RED is the perfect camera for that type of film. But IMAX is way more interesting and long lasting than stereoscope, and it's arguably simpler, too.

Drone? DRONE? PHIL DOES NOT USE DRONES.

Thanks guys! I'll actually upload the 5 minute one of this take as well. That's really how it was shot :) Maybe I'll do that with a bit different color.

I shoot enough where that's not really how I work. I do bring a meter with me if i'm filming during the day to digest what ND I need to role with because once it's up there that's how you're rigged in the bird. In terms of actual exposure, in camera exposure tools and how they apply to the zone system for the most part.

Don't know if it's full IMAX in terms of the pure aspect ratio. I'm a bigger fan of 1.9:1, 2:1, 2.39:1, and 1.78:1 for wide screen appeal, but true IMAX is 1.43:1 and I do know some of the other large format guys LOVE that aspect ratio. I "like it", but I like WS more typically. It's more about how we experience images and I do wonder if we will break into 1.43:1 in the home and more theaters. For now, I'd actually like to see more adoption to full DCI specs.

Which drone are you flying?

As mentioned, this isn't a drone. Much of the aerial work I've been doing the last 3-4 years has been mostly in the helicopter w/ the Shotover F1 system:

There's been a handsome amount of drone work in there too when the time calls for it. For instance on the Great Wall of China I didn't want the helicopter blades scraping the walls, so a drone was more ideal.

Overall, since much of my work is long form in terms of take length and distance, helicopter is much more ideal.

Amazing!!! Which lens did you use? Great seeing you at the ASC and thank you for the VV demo

Great to see you again Roger! This was the Tokina Cinema Vista 35mm T1.5 prime. I've got the 25mm prototype now, pretty eager to give that a go in large format aerial world. I've been using the Zeiss Otus primes a lot for lower light work in the bird too.
