  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

1st Scarlet....

It's interesting seeing people who are excited about 1K motion. What exactly are you guys looking to use it for? Not an attack. Just curious.

I think I'll be using it for a few slow motion shots depending on how well it does when projected. The FOV loss is pretty severe making wide angle very difficult to perform. I'll be doing a lot more slow motion at 2k and 3k due to that with less fps and perhaps slowing down in post.

However, the way I see it now, I fully intend on some 3:1 120fps 1k to upscale and sharpen back to 4k to see how it holds.

I'm sure a lot of people will be interested to see this test :)

1k is like having a raw 120fps dvx100. Remember the tons of nice things that were done with the dvx. It's great to have this possibility. I like HD but i also like SD, its softness, its grain. And i like it more and more since every video from any amateurish camera is cristal clear hd with ultra shallow dof. Sometimes it's refreshing to shoot in SD with a deep fov.

A quick question, Tonaci: Are you given different options in terms of aspect ratio on the Scarlet? I would assume that in theory you can just shoot 1.90 aspect ratio and crop it later, but can you set the camera to record 2.40 aspect ratio?

[EDIT]And, for that matter, can you set the different aspect ratios for each resolution? Like a 4k, 3k, 2k and 1k at 2.40 aspect ratio?

Just a recap. Is it 3 known scarlets out yet or more?

Think more than 3, at least 4 known but there must be a lot more, given it is thanks giving, we'll know for sure come 2nd week December (Dec 1st is meant to be canon mount) when people have received and start shooting...I'm working off a 7 day delivery or an 'in case Dec 1st' doesnt happen scenario...so 2nd week Dec check again

I assume that the 1K 120fps may look similar to the GoPro Hero 2's 120 fps, but more zoomed in and REDcode RAW.

Hi guys,

Very curious to know how the Scarlet's different levels of compression compare with footage from other cameras out there. For example, how well does footage shot at 12:1 or even 18:1 compression withstands grading. Maybe Tonaci, you can shed some light on this?

My objective with this camera (which should hit my door in early December:-)) is to cover a wide range of jobs from the corporate to the feature. Also the SSDs comes at a price, so if I can shoot for a corporate or viral without having to go mad on the redmags and still not compromising on image quality too much, that would be ideal.

Really appreciate if you lucky guys who have had their cameras delivered could test this aspect. I am very excited about this camera and can't wait to start shooting with it!

i'm pretty sure that level of compression is not available on a scarlet. From what I understand what they list on the data sheet is what you get. Or in other words, maximum 7:1 compression?

If I am incorrect then that means we should have the ability to go to higher frame rates at 3K etc.. which would be advertised I'm sure.

At second glance of this thread - http://173.199.159.58/forum/showthread.php?66210-Scarlet-X-Data-Sheet

It shows the compression rate all the way to 12:1 which enables 93 min. of recording time on a 128 GB SSD... not sure if changing compression allows for higher frame rates or simply longer record times.

Hi Tonaci,
I downloaded the flowers one from vimeo so I could play with quicktime player and pause it.
I was looking at the frames and I don't see any noise at all !!!

When I put your r3d's in my redcine-x I saw a screen of a 'grey' like noise. You can see what I saw here --> link

Did you use a noise reduction filter like neat?

Hi J David,

I did not use any noise reduction filter. I slightly adjusted the s curve to crush the blacks and punched up alchemy.
My original PRORES file of this sequence is really clean. Vimeo added additional noise due to their compression.

Awesome Tonaci, thats what I was hoping to hear. Thanks for responding so quick

The chart shows the lowest RC you can go at that framerate.
The highest RC is still 18:1 for all the modes.

No change in max frame rates at higher compression settings?

I think they wouldnt want to even dare say its possible until they roll it out in a firmware update... I can only imagine the posts if they said they could, and then found out they couldnt heheh

Hi Deanan and company, thanks very much for all your replies. It will be great to know more on how well the higher compression rates do, as with the price of the redmags so high (for me anyway), it would make sense to on some jobs for the web to use a higher compression rate. I'm assuming I won't be shooting fiction every day.

How much more noise do you get in the blacks, do you get any moire and how well does it perform when you start grading them. These are really key questions for me.

I have a feeling they are being conservative with the specs until firmware and features more fully developed. Stability is most important right now.
