October 30th Announcement Feedback

Focus ring... iris and zoom control are electronic (focus is electronic also if selected). New fly by wire controls.

Jim

Wait, do you mean that the focus ring has the option of not being electronic, and would therefore have hard stops? That would be pretty great - I really like how on the Sony EX cameras you can have the focus ring coupled to the actual lens, and then you pull it back to put it in electronic mode. It's also heaps more responsive than any servo controlled ones I've used.

API access

API access

Based on the announcements and discussion here, I'm guessing there will be a new application from red to help us program configurations for button mappings, touch focus, all the touchscreen monitors, not to mention the wicked OLED display on the electronic lens and just about everything the brain is connected to.

I like the possibility of configuration (hopefully) done through XML files that you can quickly sync to the brain(s) on set via the network without much fuss or rebooting. (So shooters can have their own button setups and take them from camera to camera, project to project). If configurations are/were XML (Like REDCINE_X uses for looks), us developers could easily write programs that provide alternate management interfaces for specific aspects of operation, like focus control, button mapping or monitor configuration.

Also, I'm expecting a realtime API of some sort, for bidirectional telemetry and fly by wire from non-traditional remote interfaces... like zoom/focus control using motion tracking on an iTouch? (not that I think its precise enough, but you get the point). Am I way off here?

Seeing how much effort Red is putting into Doing It Right(tm), can I guess that you'll announce a date for APIs to be made available for developers, or a new developer program beyond the API for REDCODE RAW?

Fair enough. If one wants all manual, there's always the other 2/3" Scarlet.

Since there are only a few Tattoo cameras to be built (relative to interest), we will ONLY select users that:

1. Have a RED ONE (preferably a low serial number).

Serial number 137...

2. We have a great working history with.

There was the Windows vs. Mac thing I was hung up on for a while, but I own a Mac now...

3. Are likely to be exceptionally patient.

Definately me...

4. Known to us for giving good feedback.

In the early days I ftp'ed a lot of files for Deanan and Stuart to look at...

5. Usually say nice things and don't push our buttons (good attitude).

In the immotal words of Bill Murray in Ground Hog Day... "Wow, I am REALLY close on this one!"

I'm throwing my hat into the Tattoo ring, Jim. I hope you'll have me.

Coming from the HPX171 & HPX301 side of things, the 2/3 scarlet with fly by wire and lm sure loads of additional features sounds fantaaaaastic:001_smile: and looks even better:coolgleamA: as l always hoped a great camera like this combined with the Red raw codec will be a game changer, a killer combination. For guys like me in the corporate world this is the type of camera combined with the S35 is my dream combination...:cheers2: thanks for posting the photo Jarred this gives us scarleteers so much heart.

Sony and Panni over the years although producing great cameras have been restrictive and never thought outside the box and just given what was necessary no more no less, Red has changed all of that forever:coolgleamA:

Here is a request PLEASE for us who so want to move over to scarlet asap once in production. Would it be possible to make available footage shot by the red team for us to up load and test through our edit systems. This would be such a help so when we get the camera we can hit the ground running. Just normal shots would be great eg. landscapes, people, street scenes this honestly would be a huge bonus to us. A very big ask but just hoping.

Wow ==> the pic of the 2/3 Scarlet fixed ! :cheers2:

I second that "red-itable" (ya i went there) scarlet footage would help a lot in terms of making sure my editing suite is ready to go. 3K footage is certainly going to be strenuous on some systems, although proxies etc. should facilitate that.

Brad, gotta think Red Rocket rather than proxies. Just like Google, it's your friend.

Yes,,, there is the 2/3" Cinema... but now we can't choose because we don't know anything about MINI Lenses... price for example... maybe they'll be too much expensive... and I need a Zoom lens!!...

I'm curious to see the brain of the Fixed one...

The Scarlet (fixed lens especially) looks to be one major game changer. I suspect Sony, Panasonic, and Canon development departments are going to wake up today, see the pix posted last night and hiccup all through their morning coffee. For filmmakers like me who do intimate documentaries it looks to be an ideal tool.

Still, I'm very sad. I'll begin shooting a two hour film and a one hour film (piggy-backed) in February. Given what Jim has said about the development schedule, the Tatoo beta not starting untill the end of the year, I'm more than doubtful the Scarlet will be released when I need it. That means going out and spending 12-14G's on an EX1R, Nanoflash, cards and assorted support gear. It'll be a nice rig but frankly, my dear, I do give a damn.

New Sensor Red One

New Sensor Red One

Question:

And forgive me if this is asked but what are the options for current one red owners like myself who want to keep their camera and buy one of the new models. I already read the pricing in the announcement, not concerned with that. What I am asking is...

Is there a new sensor coming out for my red one camera? How much is that sensor? How long is the turn around once you send it in to get it upgraded? I really don't want to give up my red one because it's awesome but I would like it to have the latest technology for capturing image.

Thanks,

Sean Overbeeke :cheers2:

BTW, if it's not included in the spec, Bluetooth would be a nice addition for people like me who need to monitor sound while shooting. Being tethered to the camera with earphones is always a pain in the ass.

The announcement clearly says: Stage 2 - Buy Epic s35 and keep your red one. Stage 2 customers eligible for sensor upgrade $4500.00.

No delivery dates have been announced.

Annnnd there goes any chance I was getting the Fixed Lens Scarlet. Oh well.

Sorry to say that a zoom ring is a pretty necessary feature. I assume you have some robust settings to control zoom beyond just the "+/-" buttons we see on the Side Handle, but still, having to program how far you wanna zoom and how fast for every single shot? Just give me a ring to grab!

Lee, think outside the box! when you fast zoom how often do you hit the finish spot spot on! lm thinking this could be more precise and functional, so l wouldn't dismiss it yet, you might miss out on something really big and ground breaking.

I've never used the servo zoom on my HVX, but then I'm not a doco shooter.
I'll have to balance the absence of real control over zoom and iris, vs how much I can afford.
Dave
