  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

17" Hanns-G monitor

As far as the HDMI cables go. I agree they are usually WAY to heavy to mount to the camera. So I got a 90degree adapter and a 2meter HDMI extension cable. Then that acts like a dolly pullaway, and takes all the stress off the camera.

Some pic's of your set up would be great. How are you finding this HDMI system compared with a typical BNC style system.

Pics will be coming, I've only just got the monitor and tried it on a friends RED (mine is still on the way)

HDMI is no replacement for a good hd-sdi system. It is and always will be a little more cumbersome and non set friendly. Hell a hdmi/dvi cable has like 17 contacts VS a BNC with two. They are different but non exclusionary in my mind.

Which one is easier to replace in a pinch? BNC.

Which one weighs less? BNC.

Which one costs $149 (thats like $5 Canadian)? HDMI

Which one shows the full UI? HDMI

p.s. FINNER were you in Seattle for a shoot last month?

Thanks for your hearty recommendation of the 17" Hanns-G, Mike. BTW: In your tests, did you determine whether the Hanns-G can be used with a Macbook Pro to view rushes directly from RedCine?

Right now, I'm trying to decide between two options:

1. Splurging on the JVC 24" DU for color grading/studio usage AND picking up the $149 17" Hanns-G for field monitoring (for focus, composition, et al. AND hopefully playing back rushes for the director).........OR:

2. Going with the JVC 17" for field monitoring, and also temporarily using it for non-critical color grading (until a replacement for the JVC 24" or something from RED or another company comes along, AND until I have more funds...)

Let me know when the pics of your setup will be available and whether you're still experiencing that 'squish' problem with the menus. Thanks for your guidance.

I looked at nearly every user manual on the Dell website to see which monitors have a 1:1 and/or 16:9 setting. The 2407wfp, 2408wfp, and E248wfp all have 1:1 and aspect ratio settings. As do the 2007wfp and sp2008wfp. None of the 17" or 19" had those options. HOWEVER, I bought a 2007wfp thinking that it would work since it has those options and is the "top of the line" and it wouldn't display the HDMI/menus mode, only the 720p preview. It displayed the preview at 1:1 or at 16:9, so it looked correct. But no menus. I can't say whether any of the others will work. But it looks like I'm slowly working my way through all of the Dell options, so I'll let you know every time I have to return another one : )

SO, as of build 15 2.2.1, DON'T buy the Dell 1908wfp or 2007wfp if you want menus.

Hi Parisrem,

Just to make sure, have you selected the right output option in the preview menu on the Red camera ? HDMI doesn't necessarily output the menu, you have to select that option.

Cheers,
Damien

Yeah, I did. Thanks for checking, though. There are 2 options: 720p preview, and DVI menus. I've tried both on all the monitors I've tested. You can add the Dell E248wfp and the Dell sp2008wfp to the monitors that will NOT show menus. They will both display the preview and both have 1:1 and aspect ratio settings so that you see the preview at the correct aspect ratio, which is good. But no menus as of build 15.

The Dell 2407wfp works great. I'm working on a job right now and the producers had one in an office. We plugged it in and we can get menus, preview and there are options for 1:1 and 16:9. The default colors don't match the Red LCD very well. But it looks like all of the more expensive 24" Dells will work.

They also have a 19" Westinghouse(don't know the model) that displays both menus and preview, and actually has a pretty close contrast/color match to the Red LCD, but doesn't have the correct aspect ratio and there are no menu options for it. I'm finding that a lot of monitors will display either menus or preview or both, but very few have aspect ratio settings.

I tested the Hanns-G HW194D and it doesn't work with the RED. You can't set the aspect ratio. So you see the 720p preview "stretched".

I use the Eizo 24'' S2411W at the moment. That monitor displays the preview 1:1 and enlarged to full screen, but doesn't display the menus.

Thanks, I was about to get the Hanns-G HW194DP to try it out, but I suppose they're the same.
So basically, the only proven current solution for menus+correct ratio is still the Dell 2407 or 2408?

I think someone mentioned that a couple of HPs have all options as well, but they have glossy screens. I'll try to find the post.

wasn't there a cheaper LG monitor that was working too? wasn't it one that RED was using?? or was that just showing menus but not at 1:1 pixel ratio?

help...

Hey Mike,
What do I need outside of what comes in the package to hook this into my red. Going to order soon...

- I just got a 17" Hanns-G monitor and I'm a bit confused from these posts because itdisplays VIDEO ONLY squished vertically and displays the video w/ menus correctly. If I had to choose one to display correctly, it would be with menus so I'm okay with it.

- Any recommendations on CASES for this monitor?

Currently using an old Zero Halliburton with cut foam. Holds monitor + mafer mount + power and HDMI cabling.

Those pics still coming? Any word on the 1:1?

Would love to see some pictures if you have them as well. But I know your quite busy.

Is there a solid confirmation that the Dell 2408WFP will work with Build 16? I need to order another monitor ASAP for use with my computer and to pull double duty as a monitor for use with my Red in my workspace.

Any help is appreciated.

How much difference 1:1 pixel mapping make. Is it a must for accurate focus. I am struggling to make a decision between Dell1708 and Dell2408. Dell 1708 does not have 1:1 but is quite cheap. Any advice appreciated.

I've got the 1708 and you'd rather have 1:1 pixel mapping for on set anything because even though you can probably desqueeze it in your head no one else can. They'll relentlessly wonder why it looks funny.

You might want a 24" because of the 1080P playback that's now in build 16. Or just get this Hanns G monitor if they are still out there.

I asked Hanns G tech support about this, and they didn't seem to have a clue.

"I have checked supported resolutions on most of our monitors and none of them indicate that this is a supported resolution[720P]. The only information that I would be able to provide is that your configuration may work fine depending on your video card, however this is not a supported resolution or configuration and has never been tested so we would not be able to provide any type of support for this configuration if it did not work. I understand this may not be the definitive answer that you are looking for, but it is the best information that I can provide as we are unable to test this setup for you to confirm if it will or will not work." --Bryan Taylor, Customer Service Supervisor, Hanns G

so would the 17 inch hanns g work for say framing with a jib? ideally I'd like 1:1 pixel mapping but really I just need something for the jib and for client confidence.... any other suggestions?
