  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

17-50mm V2

I really like these lenses, they are not much bigger than a wide prime! At 17mm it is nice and wide and obviously up 50mm is very useful.

I did some testing of the vignetting.

I usually shoot 5k 2.4:1 (because it goes to 120fps) and the 17-50 covers all of the 5k as long a focus is farther than 2.5 feet. Closer focus than 2.5 feet at 17mm vignettes. the 16:9 crop is good at all focus.

Here are some quick iPhone pix of one of my lenses.

What's up with the front internal element housing? This looks like a rehoused lens inside a larger body lens frame as it looks as if there is plastic (or maybe metal) flange to put a smaller clip on lens hood on the extended part? Are these internally rehoused still glass ,possibly TOKINA, Tamron, etc??

I think it tamron 17-50mm f2.8 rehoused. Luckily this is a great still lens... they preform scarily similar. Rest assured even if its a 400.00 rehoused lens I've shot Kris Kristofferson, John Rich, and many other high profile artists for music videos with it. No Complaints.

though it could be a bit more weather protected... but the price point arguablly does not allow that.

it will mount we have used a hacked gh-1 with the hot rod as a b cam and threw this lens on it. It really is a stellar lens for the price... Its on every thing I direct.

Did anyone get the replacement front yet?

Yup, I have 2! I really like this lens, I find myself using more than I thought I would and I have a lot of lenses.

Prost,
Rich

Does anyone have experience mounting this on a PL modified 7D? Something like the Hot Rod mount...

It should be great, It dose not have much of a rear element, no clearance issues...

Rich

I had better send another email then. You are right about this lens. I originally bought it to put on the fs100 and maybe for low-budget rentals but found myself using it more and more. I even used it on a night shoot recently and it looked great.

Can anyone who has been using this lens comment on its breathing characteristics? thanks.

It is not bad at all. It dose breathe a little but it is a zoom.

Pretty much sums it up... Breathing is noticeable. Nowhere near as bad as its 18-50mm predecessor.

If you want such a zoom with *much less* breathing, then your best bet is the Optimo DP 16-42, which is 3X the price and back-ordered well into next year. Or you can pay up for the Optimo 15-40 and have *almost* no breathing at 7X the price. Yes, really the RED 17-50 is 1/7th the price of the Optimo 2.7X...

FWIW, I think too many people concern themselves over breathing far more than they should... There's also the Cooke CXX 15-40 as well, but I have a hard time recommending it. Nearly the same price as the Optimo 15-40 and it's a bit faster with that "Cooke look", but it's the one Cooke lens that don't like. The CA is absolutely horrendous and it's not all that sharp compared to their older 18-100 or the Optimo 15-40. Breathing on it isn't bad, but noticeable. Similar to the Optimo DP 16-42.

I don't own this lens, but have shot with it a couple times now (not the new V2, the original version with the satellite-dish front).

It's a great lens, but at this price point, there are still compromises being made. Personally, I'd love to see what RED could do if they were to offer a 15-40 or similar zoom with a "no-compromise" design, even if it takes the price point to the same level as the others out there. That probably makes little sense as there's already 4 competing lenses in that arena, two of them from the same maker (Angenieux). But I'm just saying I bet RED could work some magic here.

As for the theories on it being a re-housed lens. I think "re-housed" is too strong of a word. All indications point to it being a proprietary mechanical design and housing structure. It's entirely possible they are using glass elements and optical design from elsewhere -- like the Tamron. They do perform eerily similar as has been mentioned. Not that it really matters one way or another. The proof is in the images and this is a sweet little lens. It's a great size and weight (especially with the V2 mod) and it makes lovely, sharp images. It sells at a great price for a cine-style zoom. I don't own one, but often find myself wishing I did. If a Battle-Tested one ever shows up in the online store, I'd buy it in a heartbeat!

I love everything you said but that RED needs to get into more lenses. Not until they ship a couple hundred thousand cameras... ;) - seriously. Does RED even WANT to be that big? Just because one CAN, doesn't always mean one should. ;)

Does the v2 heavily vignette with mmb-1 with bellows or o-box with bellows? I need a 3 stage mb with rotating stage that will work and not heavily vignette.

Whats the status on the lens caps? We now have the temporary 67mm cap, but when will the one covering the whole front coming?

The 17-50 V2 lens is currently backordered in the Store. Any word of an estimated "out of backorder" date for this?

Thanks

:))

One thing to mention... you obviously will need a new lens cap for the new hood , which we will include once they get out of tooling in about a month. The new lenses and upgrades will ship with a 67mm lens cap right now to protect the inset glass elements, and you will be sent the 114mm lens caps when they are ready.

So we are a more than a half year later now, and i still have a temporarily 67mm lens cap on it. Just got the lens back from a repair, but still no lens cap...c'mon guys, i really had expected to get a normal lens cap back with the repair, when are you guys going to sent it out, i think i've waited long enough now...
