  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

17-50mm V2

I just want to say THANK YOU.

I have some Canon Lenses. I never got an offer to upgrade a lens...
RED really cares about their customers.

I really like these lenses, they are not much bigger than a wide prime! At 17mm it is nice and wide and obviously up 50mm is very useful.

I did some testing of the vignetting.

I usually shoot 5k 2.4:1 (because it goes to 120fps) and the 17-50 covers all of the 5k as long a focus is farther than 2.5 feet. Closer focus than 2.5 feet at 17mm vignettes. the 16:9 crop is good at all focus.

Here are some quick iPhone pix of one of my lenses.

Thanks for posting pics Rich :)

Has the issue these lenses have with the iris breathing when the zoom ring is turned been fixed? This is the one major complaint I have heard about them.

While we are on the subject of glass....

any chance of RED making a set of filters, ND's at least, that are designed with RED's color science and the specific needs of CMOS sensors in mind?

I understand with the new policy of not announcing products until they are due to ship mitigates against a yes or no response but if you are not already working on something like this then perhaps you can take this as a gentle suggestion.

If you do then I would love to see ND's (at least up to 1.5 with the 800 iso sensitivity in mind) that eliminate far red(or whatever you want to call it), and a correction filter to tungsten..

Nothing has changed optically. You can't "fix" optical properties of a lens. You can only design a new lens.

Please forgive this silly question, but I have one of the original RED 18-50mm lenses. I don't think it is designated as a "pro" lens and I am curious what are the differences between this original lens and the PRO 17-50mm?

Thanks,
Phil

The flying saucer thing was a bit large, but it was good too because my home made filterholder for 18-85 fitted perfect on it :)
The 17-50 it a crazy good lens! Just been shooting 8 days tv-pilot in Spain. Ended up shooting everything with just this lens!

I like to shoot with this lens so much that it's the same thing for me... When it's mounted on one of my camera, I'm becoming lazy and shoot everything with it...

I may be the one person who benefited from the big honkin hood. Because it was completely incapable with my old redrock mattbox, and the MB-20 II was almost a perfect snug fit, even as a clamp on, I invested in an MB20-II. SO NICE. AC's have loved this lens, and its been very useful when I need run and gun, or a zoom, or just a very odd millimeter when I'm backed up into a small space but need a specific size shot. Before I had the MB20 I was having to use 67mm circular filters for ND. I'd still recommend picking up a set of those for ultra lightweight shooting, or at least a 62mm Fader ND with a 67mm step up ring. I know using a fader ND is not ideal, but there are times when that can save the day with it's speed of operation and no need for mattbox. Thanks again for V.2.

RED EUROPE LTD will be getting some of the new hood version pretty soon, yes.

Has anyone posted breathing tests with this lens (V1)? I remember seeing some, but I thought it might have been with the 18-50.
