  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

13th responses here...

Sounds like you haven't been reading anything I have posted on the subject. Do a search and then please re-ask the question.

BTW... if you shoot a film camera and have non-sync'd flashes go off, they split the frame. But that still doesn't reflect you reading my earlier posts.

After you read my posts on the subject and still have questions... I'd be happy to answer.

My best,

Jim

I read the article and it cleared up the skewing issue, but I've never worked with film so I didn't know about the non-synced flashes. So my guess is that this sample I found online: http://web.mac.com/fini1/iWeb/Site 135/4k Red Camera.html is no irrelevant since if it were properly synced, there won't be such an issue in the broken strobes.

Ryan,
Jim's post may clear some things up for you, but you clearly have no experience shooting flashes on film, and are best off not mouthing off about subjects you know nothing about, in a forum where some contributors do know a thing or two. it's very very annoying. Go off to film school or something. Or do a test of non synced flashes on film and show us the film-like results.
I make no apologies if I sound rude.

In no way are you being rude. I have no experience in film and have only worked with video. I only take my assumptions from what I hear in theory about film (shutter opens, light hits the film, film gets exposed, you get one whole image per shutter), but havent havent had experience myself to support what I am saying. I am currently a college student studying these things, but haven't gone far enough to know enough to challenge anybody's thoughts here.

I take everything you say from an educational point of view because I am going through these forums to learn. In short, I truly appreciate you telling me these things because I'd rather look like an idiot here (though I should probably use a fake name) rather than be an idiot on the field.

I think the misinformation you may have is that all CMOS are the same. And that RED is a slow read-reset. It isn't. Quite the opposite. And getting faster with each release. Monstro will equal film in read-reset time to spinning shutter. There are now MANY features , episodics and "stuff" being shot on RED and issues you are speaking of are not slowing anyone up. My bet is that you will not experience any issues different than these productions. There are un-sync'd flash issues, just as there are with film.

You are certainly welcome to learn here. Doing searches helps us (me in particular) not have to post the same info 10 times. Sorry if I seemed a bit harsh. It has been a long two months...

Jim

Ryan, take a look at this animation of a moviecam shutter... you can imagine how a strobe might go off as the edge of the shutter is passing (say halfway) through the gate. This could give a similar effect to the one that you demonstrated in the footage you linked to previously.

lets face it, the forum is one of the worst ways to disseminate proper information... No one's fault. Even as someone that wastes too much time on this forum i am lacking information. I have learnt to do better searches but its always a task and sometimes you just want a simple answer while you deal with the rest of life. hey, its better than before the net but it's a task in what we know could be here.. In other words better systems could be put in place and perhaps should be considered, considering, there's a lot of misinformation getting out there, a lot from these boards and its not helping anyone.... Information dissemination

Information dissemination

We need a visionary in information dissemination (the camera dept. we have covered)

I'm not going to pretend that I'm a visionary in information dissemination, but here are a few ideas:

* blog
* forums
* wiki
* polls
* issue tracker

The blog could be used for one-to-many info with an option for comments (that could be hidden). For example the announcements about new cameras could be posted in a blog and instead of having to punch F5 through the keyboard you could subscribe to the feed from the blog and use your favorite feed reader for keeping up. Or you could read the blog page. The blog could support (in addition to feeds, which is pretty common) aggregators like digg, reddit etc. An example of a blogging engine could be Wordpress http://wordpress.org/ and an example of a blog could be the Dilbert blog http://dilbert.com/blog/

The forums would still be the place for general discussion on various topics, interaction between RED and its clientele and between the numerous RED owners and potential buyers. Discussion I believe is an invaluable tool for getting a thorough feel for the customer base (both current and potential) as well as allowing for more trivial or lighter issues to be dabbled with. However, a forum quickly becomes too complex and meandering for searching it for the latest information or previous answers to questions. It is not unusual to get repetitive posting be it the question, answer or a comment, especially on days like the 13th or the 3rd with posts flying in by the second. Reduser.net obviously serves as an example of a forum and PHPBB http://www.phpbb.com/ would be an example of a forum engine (although these examples are pretty redundant).

The wiki would serve as an information store, knowledge base, whatever you wish to call it. The wiki could have some pages, which can only be modified by RED employees for disseminating the kind of information, which though "subject to change" would benefit from appearing official. The wiki could also have other pages, which could be edited by anyone, allowing for the community to spread their knowledge about using their RED product(s) as well as (with the use of talk pages, commenting etc. depending on the wiki engine) allowing for an amount of discussion on the subjects of the articles. A wiki would allow newbies and other learners to quickly scan the available info on a given subject, add pages from their experience and maybe ask the same questions a little less. A wiki would also let e.g. forum members end or at least shorten discussion on overlapping themes by referring to a wiki page on the subject. A wiki with valuable content could serve to empower current RED users and lower the threshold for potential buyers for getting into a RED workflow. Wikipedia (http://wikipedia.org) is probably the best known wiki in the world and it runs on MediaWiki http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki.

Polls could be used for a different kind of crowd sourcing (compared to e.g. the wiki). The polls could be set up by RED employees for issues on which they would like to see some input from the users or potential buyers side on a specific item. A poll could also be set up by a user or potential buyer for any number of issues they feel worth polling. The results of the polls could then at the complete liberty of RED be used for realigning the product offering, adjusting kit pricing, getting a feel for the crowd or whatever. An example of a polling system could be http://www.doodle.com/main.html and an example of a poll in it could be this http://www.doodle.com/participation.html?pollId=fih6nwumrz8r5fa8

An issue tracker could be used for, well, issue tracking (sic). An issue could be a delayed delivery, a broken thingy, problem with a beta (or stable) release of some software or any number of things. An issue tracker could be used to collect all the information on that specific issue into one place, and assist in processing, categorising, tackling and solving of that issue. Usually issue trackers work based on email or through web forms. The issues could either only be answered by RED employees, but could maybe also be answered by moderators or other experts. These moderators or experts could be granted access into the issue tracker or parts of it e.g. based on merit in answering topics in the forums. An example of an issue tracker could be Request Tracker http://bestpractical.com/rt/ and I don't know right now of a public site that uses it...

Obviously numerous outlets for information place some added load on the person posting as well as an amount of administrative overhead in dealing with the different sites. However as most of the administrative work has to do with setting up the system and not with maintaining it (or at least that part can be delegated to a number of persons without serious side effects) the benefits of using several more optimally aligned information pathways in the dissemination of information compared to only using one (I feel) clearly outnumber the drawbacks.

This is obviously only my own opinion having used all of the above methods of information dissemination somewhat successfully in the past 5-10 years, so I'm not saying that from a beginners point of view the amount of different information avenues might not look daunting. Just thought I'd offer my ideas since ideas were called for. If nothing else, I would propose setting up a wiki as I feel it is one of the greatest ways of avoiding answering the same question twice.

Oh, and sorry about the ridiculously long post...

the posts are getting off track, but I agree that a wiki/faq etc would be a great thing to have. especially it would take the nuisance of jim's shoulders (and everyone else doing it) to repost for people who are not even trying to search and/or read. i believe that even if the search engine would be more than perfect, there will still be enough people who'd rather post again before digging through hundreds of posts.

so with some sort of wiki/faq most of the recurring stuff could be answered with "read the wiki" ;) even though someone would have to decide what's wikiworth and whats not... just my two cents no one was keen on having ;)

-Shooting in IMAX is about "clarity" and "sharpness" not being big. It's about providing a "sense of the screen disappearing."

-He was shocked that no one ever tried to work with action films in IMAX before & would love to shoot a film entirely in IMAX. The problem with this? An IMAX camera is very noisy, SO noisy in fact that all the dialogue in every IMAX scene had to be looped in post - a feat more difficult for the younger generation of actors, who have less ADR experience. Would ideally like to shoot a hybrid film where all MOS scenes are IMAX are all scenes with dialogue are 65mm.

is someone gonna tell Chris Nolan about EPIC ?

...all the dialogue in every IMAX scene had to be looped in post - a feat more difficult for the younger generation of actors, who have less ADR experience...

It is said that more that 75% of any released features' dialogue is ADR due to producer/distribution company rquests, so they must really learn such skill...:sarcasm:

Wally Pfister (Chris Nolan's DP) doesn't seem to enjoy digital cameras. I heard him talk at Cine Gear this year and he continuosly mentioned how he didn't trust the RED camera due to it's post color and exposure uncertainties. He seemed to very much so take the same stance that Spielberg has on digital cinema.

The same thing worries Daryn Okada, the President of the ASC. They both want a common color space and gamma that can be established as the norm for post digital work flows.

I see where their worries lie, but IMO, if you've got a good amount of pre-production/testing time and a great on set DIT, you shouldn't worry about such things.

Hopefully Epic can help bridge the gap between die-hard film buffs and digital, it would be a lot of fun to see what a talented DP like Pfister could do with an Epic.

The New Red Price List

The New Red Price List

Jim! OK, when-ever you’re ready, I’m ready for your Cameras prices, or rather we are-all ready for them. That would include everything or at least whatever you can provide. So far we have the prices for the most important thing, The Brain! Now we need the rest of the body.

I began a spread-sheet with the descriptions; I have some prices, the brains, and the old accessories. But I’m missing all the new things. As I said, whenever you are!

The prices are extremely important in order to plan for what to purchase, and to get a fuller picture of the whole amount. So we wait with baited-breathe for the Price List, again whenever you’re ready! I guess it will be somewhere between NAB 2009 and Today, that we’ll get the Prices!

It all LOOKS great!

Red Team (or anyone willing to answer),

Ditto on all of the hundreds of excited posts. Quick question:

I heard from an fxguide podcast that, with respect to lens mounts, we will be able to put just about any mount on any brain. So, for the 2/3 Scarlet, will we be able to use a PL mount, or will we be limited to Red minis, C and B4 mounts?

Thanks.

i will answer YES! i am 99.9% sure. the mount on the accessories list says interchangeable. RED WILL will not limit us like that at least so i've read. that is what i am going to do. ima get a nikon lens
BTW nice name humberto. thats my father's name:detective2:
