  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

99% perfection... I think timelapse should also be available for Scarlet... then Epic allows for Ramping, even higher frames per second, and RedCode 225, plus the ability to get a rocking 645 going.

Question for someone in the know... The info sheet gives the s35 Scarlet 16:9 only, but if the sensor is a 2:1 sensor will it be able to do that as well?

What is "ramping"?

Yap, Scarlet FF35 looks very good, so good I wish I could use my R1 upgrade path towards it instead of 3Xmore expensive Epic.

.......

RED ONE, Scarlet and EPIC clarification.
The "electronic engines" are different between each of these camera models. That means there are format capability differences. For example, the RED ONE has 4K, 3K, 2K, 1080P (soon) and anamorphic format options. It does ramping, time-lapse, has 4 channel 24-bit audio, etc. Scarlet will NOT have the full flexibility of a RED ONE. EPIC has more capability and flexibility than the other two. It is one of the reasons that the Scarlet body is smaller than an EPIC.

Just so you can figure that into your planning.

Scarlet will have limited format options.

RED ONE has many format options.

EPIC has virtually unlimited format options.

Yes it's not ideal, but in some cases (most of the cases I deal with) I need the long end of things, so I'd like to have it as an option if I can't afford the mini-RED lenses up front...

If you didn't want to buy a Nikon mount from Red, you could get a Nikon Fmount to C mount adapter. Not sure how well that would work, but could do in a pinch.

I first want to say what Red has done is amazing and I am in awe of how they have been able to make this technology.

But, I don't have a big budget to buy a camera system so I am wondering when the price will be announced for the fixed lense scarlet. Or if anyone can give me an idea what the cheapest configuration of the scarlet 2/3 interchangable would cost me. I mean the minumum equip I would need to make a camera ready to shoot.

Or if Jim could just please announce the price of the fixed lense.

No complaints here just wish I had more money to spend even though these prices are very good.

One more question.

Im not an expert on formats for filming and filmmaking but I see that Epic says it has 16:9 and anamorphic but scarlet shows only 16:9. So my question is and you can tell me im stupid and dont know anything but is 16:9 and anamorphic not the same thing?

Its far too brief but...
RedCentre Podcast Episode 21 is out. Mike speaks to Ted about all the announcements and more, I chat to Michael Scott who was at RED's industry event yesterday then mike and I chat till we both had to crash. We'll re convene when the dust settles for another podcast VERY soon but in the meantime please subscribe in tunes and send us feedback via red@fxguide.com

thanks
jason & Mike

16:9 is normal widescreen. when it says anamorphic it is referring to using anamorphic lenses (which record a 2:1 squeezed image to the sensor that is streched out to the correct image in post- basically 2.40 or 2.70 or something like that..? someone correct me here..)

What is "ramping"?

Ramping is changing the frame rate in-camera during a shot. It gives you a wonderful, sharp -real- time warp.

I feel that RedCode 225 vs. 42, higher framerates at higher resolutions vs. only 60fps in 2k, ramping, and the ability to go for broke with the 645 should all make the Epic owners feel good enough about their cameras for us to get one last thing for Scarlet: Timelapse... not a real big deal either.

Yeah, timelapse doesn't seem processor intensive, unless there's something I don't know about timelapse...

Anyway, no doubts now, Ted said at NAB that a feature will be shot using the Scarlet. Yeah, I'm sure MANY features will be shot using Scarlets as principle cameras, and sometimes as a B-cam to Epic or R1.

up to 60fps (i'm assuming windowed) with Scarlet S35 and FF35, nice :)

btw, nice face lift to the red.com website! Looks even more awesome!

Less weight & Smaller sizes = good thing for us which travel a lot with our gear!

Jim & the TEAM - this is one thing I am ready to go on my knees for: I do understand that Scarlet will be limited when it comes to variable frame options and high-speed recording - which is due to the limited processing power of the smaller Scarlet Brain - but for Pete's (mine :) ) sake do allow it to capture timelapse. Timelapse has a lesser requirement on the Brain and there's no reason to not to include it on every Scarlet. Please...

:begging: (time to get some more emoticons...)

Peter

Have to agree with Peter on this one.

Without timelapse capability, and long exposure capability (will Scarlet have this?), Scarlet is no "DSLR Killer". Currently, I use my Nikon D2Xs for timelapse shots with its built-in intervalometer.

I was surprised the 3K Scarlet doesn't have a PL mount for Super-16mm lenses. Am I missing something here or would that not be possible?

I realy miss a PL mount for Super-16mm lenses on the 2/3 3K Scarlet :waaa:

Is there a technical reason?

Other question:
Will there be any redzooms for de 2/3 3K Scarlet from red?
Price for the Primes?

Jeff & Gunleik - thanks for the support. The main issue with timelapse on DSLR's is that You wreck the mirror shutter in no time. This is where Scarlet comes to play. I am willing to dedicate our own R&D resources to develop the code for this function. Speaking of which - any possibility for Scarlet / Epic camera SDK?

Timelapse capability with determine whether I buy one Scarlet FF35 or two.
If my plans works out I'll eventually be using up to six purely for timelapse at the same time.

Also power management in timelapse mode is critical. Hopefully 12hrs at 1fps (or maybe even less than 1fps)

Long exposure would be useful for night timelapse.
You don't have any plans for a programmable geared head do you?
