  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

$1299 Seiki UHDTV 50" SE50UY04 - Bought it today

Demo high speed footage of the issue with 24FPS.

Demo high speed footage of the issue with 24FPS.

Here is a test I filmed at 250 FPS to look at the issue. The Seiki is in effect stuck at 30 FPS even if you set it to 24FPS on your display driver. The TV reported 24FPS on it's info screen. You can clearly see the cadence stumble on the top image. The monitor plays 30FPS media when set to 30FPS correctly, as seen on the lower image.

Monitor driven with Nvidia Titan on a windows machine. Sony 55" plays it all without issue.

That's great info, Les. So it seems the 39" SEIKI has the same cadence or judder issue as the 50" model. And yes, it looks as if the display is performing a pull-up to 30fps for 24fps material.

Jeff, feel free to forward my video test to Seiki if you have a contact there. It might be an encouragement for then to fix it, if it is possible in firmware, that is.

Anyone want to buy my 50" SEIKI? It's in perfect condition... Just as 'good' as buying a new one. I've decided I'm just done messing with it and I have other 4K panels coming in.

I get the Samsung UN55F9000 55" 4K next week. I should also have a 70" 4K sometime in early September, but I'm not sure if I'm allowed to talk more about it just yet. I'm somewhat of a test subject for that one. ;) No, it's not the one from Sharp, which that one is indeed awesome and blows the 65" Sony out of the water for about the same price. The 55" Sony I've had here got sent back today. Long story, but Sony is dropping the ball in a huge way with these. The picture is great, but that's where the happiness ends. I'm hoping the Samsung will be a much better experience. FWIW, the Samsung is modular and upgradeable. You can upgrade the "Smart engine" with a new one in the future to gain faster processors, new software, abilities, features... All the interface ports are located in a detachable module that connects to the display via two cables. This box can be upgraded as well to add future interface standards such as HDMI 2.0, or perhaps Thunderbolt or flavors of DisplayPort if they become more standard. The panel is 3840x2160 native and refreshes at 240Hz. Currently the 4K processing tops out at 60Hz, but that can be upgraded in the future via those other modules. It's actually a really intriguing design. However, I don't know how practical it will be in the long term. By the time I'm willing to upgrade those components, there will be superior panels on the market paired with the new interfaces and smart I'd be looking to upgrade to and they will be priced a lot lower than displays are now.

Or i am wondering how much may parts cost to make it if it still can go even lower, and WHY OH WHY none from chinese makers thought themselves about adding 60Hz capability (imho mentioned $500 in forums should be more then sufficient) and easily double sales? Demand, which there certainly is, should drive supply, yet ..

This is terrific news. We have entered a standards and interconnects melee the appears primarily driven by manufacturer greed. An easily swappable outboard interface sure makes one feel more comfortable about investing in a UHD or 4K display. I would have already picked up a Sony VPL 1000ES projector if it offered a proper upgrade path, but spending over $20K for a device that may never exceed the HDMI 1.4a interconnect was impossible to justify.

I hope the other manufacturers are paying attention.

The Samsung was supposed to be here today, but the freight company is failing. Now scheduled for monday delivery, disappointing, but I'm super busy all weekend anyway. I'll do a proper review of it when it gets here because I have seen absolutely nothing online about these new Samsungs other than a glimpse of the specs.

Samsung UN55F9000 55" 4K sounds interesting w/smart phone access also....

Anything going modular is a good thing. Of course the rubber meets the road when all products from a company are thought of in the same way, but I wouldn't complain since it could only help and doesn't add to the manufacturing cost so I would assume they are not adding to the price tag because of it... looking forward to hearing about the Samsung Jeff!!

I hope they get HDMI 2.0 compatible firmware working for the entire lineup...

Anybody have any contacts at Seiki to get a response from them on HDMI 2.0 compatibility?

I don't see an 80-incher in that photo and Seiki is going up to 85-inches with their UHDTVs. 80-inches is the maximum size for their LED HDTVs.

No word on HDMI 2.0 and Seiki - based on what I'm seeing - seems to be dancing around the fact that HDMI 2.0 exists as they haven't even acknowledged that a new HDMI revision exists. All of their UHD stuff on display just says HDMI in the accompanying signs and they haven't made any statements about using HDMI 2.0 in any products coming out.

The patch, which allows 4K output from HDMI on MacBook Pro with Retina display, and other Macs, is now public!

I just added 10.8.5 support and I published my work on Google Code.

Documentation and download links are here:

http://code.google.com/p/mac-pixel-clock-patch/wiki/Documentation

Let me know if it does work or does not work for you.

Also let me know if your OS X version or video card is not supported - I might be able to add it in. AMD/ATI video cards support is likely possible, I need testers!

Cheers!
