So I have it hooked up to a GTX 480 on a PC. Latest driver.

Nvidia control panel , after setting a custom setting for 3840 x 2160 , does show it as 3840 in display resolution on the computer.

The TV still says 1080 on it's on screen info, but the size is right for a 3840 setting ( in other words, the incons are tiny, etc )
Also noticed that if I set it to 24HZ the TV set does an over scan. Set to 30HZ it does not, the borders are just at the edge of the screen as they should be. Odd.

I am not getting 3840 resolution however. I'm getting what looks like 1080 ( like the TV says ) but resized to fit the whole screen.

What's going on here ? Any special timings I should be setting ?
Does yours show 3840 when press the INFO on the remote ?

Jeff - any links to reviews of substance and reliability? I've seen various short comments, but nothing that really felt like a review.

Unfortunately, no. That is what's truly weird about this... Seems like tons of people are buying and the only two comments I'm seeing from purchasers are:

1> It's freakin' awesome!!!

2> It sucks balls and I'm sending it back.

Something tells me I'm going to side with the number 2's on this one. I'm anxious to see what Tonaci has to say. I guess I don't have that high of hopes for it and while it's great that it has UHD resolution, if it isn't passable for 1080p content, it's not going to fly around here. From some of the initial reports, and comments here, it seems the internal scaling is pure crap. IMO, it should be as simple as quadrupling each pixel to get a 1080p image, but it seems they have attempted something else and our 1080p turns to blurry goo. If the set needs external upscaling to look good, then we may as well buy the $5K Sony, IMO.

I will only be using for 4K and 6K content, so I have no interest in how it does internally. If I feed it 2K, it will be blu-ray from an upscaling player.

John,

Your tone is so serious...asking me to be careful with wording is pushy. I am laying it down as basic as possible.
Bottomline is that it does not have a sophisticated upscaling engine, plain and simple. I love the panel for the price.
It is important to point out to other potential buyers that this panel will not look good with 1080p sources feeding into which at the moment is likely 90 percent of people out there. Even i myself dont have a way to output 4k until redray ships.
I dont want anyone being dissappointed by how crappy 1080p looks on this panel.
For the price i am not expecting it to have the upscaling engine like the other brands.
Unless i missed the post, i didnt see anyone pointing out how bad 1080p feeds look in this panel.
I personally am totally fine without the sophistcated upscaling engine.

Other than that, love the panel. :-)

Tonaci,

Can you verify with the image I linked that you are getting true 3840 resolution. ( Pixel-on-pixel-off pattern )

Does the On screen info say 3840 ????

THANKS

Jarred should be getting his unit soon

Hi Tonaci,

No harm intended with the comments, just typing first thoughts quickly and jumping back to work.
Seriously, I am not good with online etiquette, so please interpret caps as italics?...

We had a number of people claiming we were lying about this panel displaying 4K, to the point we had to put up a pixel level shot
to dispell that myth... yet, people even still said it's BS or upscaling voodoo...

Red also had to defend the 4K benefits for a while as a scam/imperceivable,
and this tech hopefully shows people the benefits can be seen clearly at reasonable prices.

I am sure tons of people will tear this set apart for not being IPS, OLED, 3D, not having a $500 scaler/doubler, reference quality blacks, plasma, 60Hz, crazy high contrast ratios, etc

But ultimately, none of that matters, as we were happy with it and happy to share our quick findings.

PLUS, I think it will help sell a lot more RedRay for multi-display setups at stores and trade shows.

Glad you like the 4K panel for the price.

Back to work for me, have a great week guys disecting this puppy to see what makes it tick and how it can be optimized for use with RedRay playback.

Have fun guys- keep us posted & I'll check back next week to see how you guys are liking / disliking the set for 4K...

Cheers

That sorta makes sense. My hunch is that there are only a handful of people who have actually fed a 4K signal into the thing. The others have probably fed it 1080p and have been dissatisfied with the result. However, with that said, I did read one review where a guy fed a 4K up-scaled signal from an Oppo blue ray player. He seemed impressed. Apparently the Oppo BDP 103 & 105 players have half-way decent 4K up-scaling to 3840 x 2160. I have got an older Oppo BD player and it has been great. The BDP 103 is $500.00, so its not an arm-and-a-leg. Just a thought. The "proof-of-the pudding" will be Jarred's impressions with the Red Ray Player. You know how it is with early adopters, " ... you pays your money ... and you takes your chances ..."

The OPPO 103 has good scaling. I still think the deinterlacing in the 83 is superior to the 93 and 103, but the scaling sucks.

I am really on the fence with this display. I have almost ordered several times, but I don't really need multiple 4k displays. :)

Les, are the picture controls (contrast, brightness, etc...) enabled when sending in UHD? Some displays detect a PC is connected and disable them, unfortunately. Odd to hear about overscan with 24 Hz. That would be unfortunate.

Brt and Contrast work in UHD.

I have it working, and I like it so far.
My issue was with the graphics card setting. I had to make a custum timing setting using reduced blanking.
What is odd is that my 24P footage plays more jerky in 24P monitor mode than in 30P . No more over scan.
The colors look great, I love it.
I'm running an 8 foot hdmi cable, and I have seen the monitor drop out sometimes, again oddly mostly in 24P mode.
I'm thinking it may be a cheap cable or maybe a timing tuning I have to do on the Graphics card.
I'm using a GTX 670. It drives my 30" dell at the same time , no problems there.
I'm playing a continuous loop of UHD while I type this, seems to be running OK for a while now, at 30P.
Player is MPC - HT .
There is a slight brightness fall off on the edges of the monitor, only visible when I full screen a white screen. Not seen on footage.

My footage, which is ultra sharp looks amazing. Now HD on any other monitor looks like shit.
I couldn't care less how this thing upconverts.
Welcome to the UHD world boys and girls !

There is absolutely no excuse for 1080p to look bad on this display. SD only looks bad on an HDTV or player with shitty scaling algorithms. They don't need any special scaling algorithm, all they have to do is quadruple each pixel and suddenly it's no different than showing 1080p on a 1080p display. I fear they are not doing that, they are indeed trying to run a semi-sophisticated scaling algorithm. A shitty one. That seems to fit most of the comments I've read and heard thus far. I'm being told that 1080p on this thing looks extra mushy.

Anyway, mine is already on a freight truck somewhere that is headed my way. When it gets here, I'm going to feed it a variety of things, including 4K from a few different sources -- nVidia GTX Titan and/ or GTX690, ATI video card, upscaling Blu-Ray, a little box I'm not supposed to talk about (oops) and hopefully REDRAY in the next couple weeks. If the display sucks I'll sell or send back. If it's good, I have a good spot for it and will probably order 2 more.

Let us know how you get on with it, Jeff ... we have one on order as well ... be interesting to see how it handles the signal from the TITANs and K5000 ... we'll also test it with the 4K DeckLink card - has 4K HDMI out of it ... if it looks OK we'll show it at our 4K Training Day in West Hollywood.

Jeff, do post your opinion on Red footage on the monitor. Native 5K prores file, or 5K R3D if you can get smooth playback, 4.5K, 4K tests. Thanks again and another vote for you as a vital member of this community!

When people see genuine 4K on this set, it removes all doubt.
But you have to realize that there isn't much real 4K footage out there yet.

Just tried with CS6 Premiere , and it works nicely as the fullscreen program monitor.
Users will know their footage is not fully sharp if they set playback resolution to 1/2 and paused to full.
You should see a substantial sharpness boost when it renders the full resolution frame as you pause.
If not, you have a problem. ( if it's paused on a non motion blurred supposedly crisp frame. )

Red also had to defend the 4K benefits for a while as a scam/imperceivable,

Curious how does the color look on this? Some are saying it's 10 bit (almost too good to be true) ? How are the blacks? The specs say 5000:1 contrast ratio which seems very low but I understand the way manufacturers have been interpreting or calculating this ratio is very subject to the point where it's almost meaningless.

I don't tihink I have ever seen a monitor that could actually display 12 stops which is 4096:1, take a spot meter to one that clams 2,000,000 : 1 looking at a Chess board, I doubt you will see 8 stops difference or 256:1.
