  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Can we finally get the spec'd 1080p monitoring out the dual-link HDSDI? While using the 23" Apple Cinema Display with the Blackmagic HDLink, the 720p output looks kinda crummy in the center 1/4 of the screen. Having full 1080p monitoring would be really cool.

Shawn,

I don't want to sound like a dweeb here, but has this not been stated by RED again and again that they canno scale 1080p under the current resolution, and a 1080 build would be needed?

If I am wrong, then I join you in your request.. That would be SO COOL

Jay

I'm requesting a 1080p monitor output, not a 1080p recording. Major difference if I understand right.

Plus, 1080p monitoring has been spec'd for a long time and I don't think that's changed, regardless of what happens with 1080p recording.

Me thinks (and Barry, too... :) )that what is conceivable may be 1:1 and 1080 as un-de-bayered B&W one day, as it is the de-bayering+scaling which taxes the processing the most.

This is HIGHLY speculative and not to say that I know how this is done and @ the moment there's no signs for this. :)

Okay,
spoke to my Red sales rep...and asked him when 1080p monitoring would be enable on the sdi port. He went off...checked with who he felt necessary in his Red office and returned saying 1080p would be enabled in build 16 or if not in build 17.

Maybe it's 1080p 4:2:2 over single sdi port..ummm

Cheers,

So, anyone with fears of going tapeless could just hook up an HDCamSR Deck via HD-SDI and record at 1080p? That would certainly be a nice "insurance" backup...

1080p Output

1080p Output

Last I checked, RED stated that 1080P monitoring was not possible without installing a 1080P build.

That is a correct statement.

To expand on that, HD Preview always is 720p (with lookaround), but the dual link output could be 1080p - but only when recording 1080 RGB.

As always, the above statements are subject to change - we may yet find a way of doing things even smarter :matrix:

Whoa, this is new. You mean Red is ditching the efforts of dual-link 1080p monitoring when in normal modes??

So then can I ever hope for more than 720p out of the HD-SDI when in normal 4k/2k modes?

It's not entirely new. I think this bit of information has been around for a few months and seems to resurface occasionally. It always is quick to slip between the cracks though. The interesting statement of all of this is "As always, the above statements are subject to change." I sure hope so.

Red posted before that 1080 monitoring was not possible without 1080p RGB recording enabled. They also stated that 1080p would not be scaled it would only be windowed.

Okay, swallowing my disappointment.

Moving on to question #2

So then can I ever hope for more than 720p out of the HD-SDI when in normal 4k/2k modes?

From the responses I've gotten, don't count on it, at least not in the near future.

Will 1080p recording be available in all firmware builds? Or is this a feature that will be part of a separate "video build" that Jim mentioned in the coming out of beta thread.
It is likely to be in a separate "video build"...

The ONLY reason we are doing a build like this is because our customers want it. We see no advantage whatsoever to shooting native 1080P. But we are listening to what our customers want. My bet is that once we release it... no one will shoot it.

If someone really wants to shoot 1080P on a RED ONE... they are throwing away almost every advantage they are getting by buying this camera.

Jim
There will be a special build for 1080P (and 720P). But it will NOT be scaled.
Jim
Well these three quotes together are a real pisser...!!

No 1080p monitoring or external record the the foreseable future....Geez

- 720p focus/monitor only
- No decent ext. record
- Only decent media out thru Redcode workflow
- No Red priority on this
- 4K or HD build as a 'maybe' choice in the distant future......
- Finally when we do get some 1080p monitoring it'll be from a 1080p cropped pixels
WHOA!!!....What a complete dead pain in the backside!!!

Oh dear!!

Please let me be wrong on some of this and I simply haven't been able to fully read one of Red's pre-release feature hints with the cryptic/hidden meaning.

Does this mean no 1080p live monitoring (or playback) from any port until we get a 1080p cropped build that nobody wants?

Dave.

I'm alarmed David that you are unaware of this and
own Red # 444. What were you expecting mate, a D20?
This has been about and discussed on the board for almost
six months. Red is 4K or HD (HD build to be announced)
There is a push towards an in camera LUT system to compensate for
lack of 1080p/quality monitoring, details scetchy at the moment.
1080p external record would be HD build only with all camera resourses needed to acheive it. And Jim's not a big 1080p fan here.
Red Graphics are probably on the motherboard, this could explain the
present 720p limitation. but thats pure speculation on my part.
A LUT .Look file type system is the way to go for Digital Cinema Acquisition
anyway. Want 1080p, hassle Jim for that build, 4K and 1080p may be a whole new Red hardware situation off in the future.
Now you know why those other cameras are so expensive, but your camera
does a lot for the price

I think that when the post work flow matures into a one step simple process like it is in my still photography world, we will be happy with 4K raw output for all our work.

My only concern is with high frame rates at 4K. I shoot at 48 - 60fps for one of my biggest clients, and hope I can do it at 4K and not a 2k windowed mode.

why is it so much easier to get a 720p preview than a 1080p preview ?

Because 720p is what the LCD and EVF are using. The issue is not scaling to 1080p, the issue is that it has to already scale to 720p for those two things, and there is not enough power left in the processor to do another scale to 1080p for the HD-SDI.

At least that's my understanding.

Matthew
