  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

The roadmap is single link HD-SDI 1080P at 4:2:2- true progressive and dual link HD-SDI 1080P 4:4:4 true progressive. All recorders or end monitors must support 1080P true progressive... like the Panasonic D5 and their monitors. You need a 3rd party convertor box for non-true progressive recording or monitoring. RED only supports true progressive in camera, monitoring and post.

Jim

Sweet Slobberin' Baby Jesus!!

The implications of this should not be underestimated! Christmas in June indeed! Not trying to be redundant here, but this announcement was buried deep in another thread and deserves it's own.

Congratulations Jim to you and your team on this achievement!

Is it too soon to ask if the look imposed upon the 4:2:2 1080P playback and/or the 4:4:4 1080P dual link playback is RedSpace, Rec709, or something else?

The dual link interface supports 10-bit, 4:2:2, 1080P formats at frame rates of 60 Hz, 59.94 Hz, and 50 Hz, as well as 12-bit color depth, RGB encoding, and 4:4:4 colour sampling.
Are there any parameters need to be set by the user inside the camera for that?

. . . nothing is going to make me go back to tape after the ease of just being able to throw a QT file into a time line and watch it instantly.

What is this "tape" you speak of? ; )

4:2:2 into my HPM-110 AVC-Intra 100 recorder:

4:4:4 into a Codex:

http://www.bandprodigital.com/cgibin/eDatCat/BPDstore.cgi?user_action=detail&catalogno=COD-PORT

Not saying this will replace the current workflow at all, but it could offer some major flexibility to a huge number of people in terms of instant format delivery for systems they've already invested in (if the quality is really good enough to record from that 1080P playback).

If nothing else, a quick focus check on playback could be easier to see at 1080 than 720 (without removing the media and opening it elsewhere).

Lots of applications for this output, not the least of which might be easing producers minds who can't wrap their heads around anything other than 1080P (yet).

Jay,

Who or where has it been stated that this is a "clean" output.

I have not seen that confirmed. Have you?

David

Clean feed ?

Clean feed ?

There is no logic to have a 4:4:4 output that's not clean.

Correct, the 1080p on playback outputs are clean. That's true on existing builds for 720p on playback outputs too.

:construction: Note - these are true progressive outputs, there is no 1080 PsF support.

Panasonic, JVC and Cine-tal monitors have been verified to operate with our progressive 1080p.

Great!

Thank you for the information Stuart.

I was just asking. :)

David

Ps: I guess this build furthers my RED's Swiss army knife features.

Stuart,

Is the 4:2:2 1080p output, full debayered 'mastering' quality?

So are you saying this will not support HDCAM SR? Will you add 1080PsF later?

Which QT does the camera playback from?

David,

I am guessing but considering the computing power it takes to create FULL debayer from RA then it might not be FULL QUALITY, but I would say that a QT converted to PRO REZ in FCP is "mastering quality" (a bit of a subjective term).

There may well be enough onboard computing power in the RED's internal components to do it though and I would not be surprised if it is much better and more pleasing than a compressed HD Cam signal.

But then again "better" is subjective because it's hard to compare how RED is doing it vs. to 3:1:1 HDCAM, but I bet they have a very smart and fast algorithm that will yield great images.

David

The 1080P OP helps me understand why the ISO became so important. The image they send down that path has to be a great and match with everything else in the chain. They really went at this and as the bits of info squeak out, you can feel why Jim was saying this was going to be monumental.

So our QT files are going to ROCK in B16.

We will not support HDCAM SR and will not add 1080PsF later. We ONLY support true progressive formats.

Jim

As far as I know HDCAM SR is true progressive; unless Sony's marketing mislead me (hard to believe :sarcasm: .). HDCAM SR can get up to 60p in 1080, and from what I know there are no tape formats with more that 60 frames per second (which 60p segmented frames would end up being 120.)

HDCAM SR
@1080i: 50, 59.94, 60 Hz @1080PsF: 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97 and 30 Hz @720P: 59.94 Hz

You'd need to talk with your local Sony and Panasonic reps to understand which tape formats accept PsF only, and which accept both PsF and P variants of 1080p.

Both are valid choices under the SMPTE spec. We do 1080 P (true progressive) We have no plans to do 1080 PsF.

I'd be happy if I got Framelines/Data out of the 720p/HDSDI when using both the LCD and EVF.....

I often have to turn off one right before we shoot so the director see's where's he/she's at.
