This is such an amazing company, Jim, you are such an amazing man. In times like these, having someone doing something like this is a little bit of hope that the world is not fucked up yet. Getting there but people like Jim give us hope. Sorry if I talking a little crazy here but its 2am and I'm really drunk right now. But this attitude is unbelievable. Jim, good one buddy.

While it is not usually our position to offer rewards for our customers stolen property, this one is an exception. EPIC #00006 is truly a historic camera. It is the very 1st EPIC shipped to one of our customers and the way it was taken irritates me no end.

We are now offering $100,000 for the safe return of EPIC #00006 and the rest of the system including the media with Mark's files... and the arrest and conviction of those that broke into Mark's chalet in France. We will ONLY pay this amount if there is an arrest and conviction of the parties as we are not interested to be ransomed by thieves.

If you have any information regarding the theft, the location of Mark's property or any details that might solve this case, please contact anyone at RED and they will make sure I hear about it.

Posting information on REDUSER is NOT a good idea for several reasons, including your own safety. Please do NOT post any information you have obtained. Any post we see on REDUSER regarding information on this case will be deleted.

Jim

Amongst other things, can somebody translate this to French, and other languages if necessary?

• The culprit may have put a monitoring device in the room to determine that everyone was asleep.
•*The culprit would have pre-knowledge of how to break into that chalet without making a noise.

A very quick translation in french from my iPhone, feel free to correct me if you find some mistake in my translation.

Thanks Vincent! I have retweeted this and I hope others do too.

Jim, you continue to inspire with your stand-up nature. I really hope this saga end in a happy outcome with the return of the camera to Mark.

Mark, having been attacked in a hotel room once I can fully understand what you are going through right now. As others have said, hard though it may feel right now, you are safe and have emerged from the event physically unharmed. It's best to talk about it openly with your family and especially the children so everyone understands why you are feeling what you are feeling right now. It's ok to feel like that - it's a normal coping mechanism and before long you will be back to normal. In this case time really will help settle your emotions down again.

Fingers crossed the gear is returned and most importantly, that the perpetrators are found and locked up for a VERY long time.

Cheers and a better rest of 2011 from Tokyo!

Paul

Great idea not only for just Epic's but all Red DSMC ! RFID'S....

Good idea Vincent...

Does Epic have a password mechanism that could render it useless to anyone that does not know the password?

Big up mister Jim !
comme on dit en france : "Chapeau bas !"

Based in france not far from Meribel in Lyon. I will relay the info to all my network. Twitter / FB and on My Blog. http://www.pampuri.net
I hope we could help Mark to find his Epic back.

I wonder (for the future) whether it would be feasible to encode an encrypted unique camera number in any and every piece of footage shot and incorporate a check into any post-processing that checks with RED to see if the camera is stolen on a registered database (or not).

If stolen, the camera footage would effectively be completely locked out and unusable, rendering a stolen camera completely useless, aside from ornamental value (which sadly, is almost enough for me... I can happily sit and stare at my RED for unhealthy lengths of time - is this wrong?).

It would be impossible with something like a high volume consumer unit (e.g. Canon DSLR's) but with a lower volume, high value product like RED, with a smaller user community, in the realms of feasibility.

Of course it would mean that any and every RED related 3rd party post processing would need to incorporate it. However, this could be an area of the software that could be "closed" for developers that would just need to be incorporated as part of the licence agreement.

Additionally, when the post processing checks the footage and "finds" a stolen camera, it could ping the DNS server locations etc. to RED, giving (hopefully), some indication of the location of the stolen camera.

The processing overhead need not be onerous either... talking about a few bytes of encrypted metadata in each clip.

Please keep your eyes out for the Angenieux Optimo 15-40mm - SN s/n 1591382

Very possible that the thieves could keep the EPIC on ice and try to sell the glass.

Find this lens.

This really sucks and what a major scar on your trip. At least you and your family are okay.
Unfortunately these types of raids are becoming all too common here in the French Alps. Even the village where I live, which is very small, had several houses raided last Christmas holiday.

Hopefully these idiots will be caught!

I got a simple solution I tried to use with the RED, but it a bit hard, tracking device is cheap and small, and getting better all the time, and you need to change batteries,
I just wish Epic could come with place I can put a small device, like a hidden place inside the camera that it not easy to open or see it need to have to take usb power from the camera to charge the batteries. it won't stop Pro thief but a lot of time, it just a simple burglar. I be very happy with one cm bigger camera, but I can sleep better at night.

Let's focus on the big picture..... It's all replaceable. I would rather have my family, friends, and health over a camera that can be replaced. It could of got real ugly if you think about it. I do understand the value of the camera though. Jeffflindt.com
