  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

What does this mean?

It would be nice if RED team can still come close to mid to end of summer release dates for Scarlet 2/3" cinema and S35. I was hoping to give myself a Scarlet Cinema for a 60th birthday present in August. :sarcasm:
May be more like Christmas now?

LOL - its nice to see a few more grizzled old veterans posting here! On RED User me, Leo Tichelli, Keith Nealy, and a few others have seemed to have had that niche mostly to ourselves.

Chronologically I turned 60 last October - but I'm fortunate in that physiologically, and in lifestyle, I seem to myself and others to be a lot younger than that.

Some insight on turning 60: it is a question of mind over matter - if you don't mind it don't matter :)

If the timetable works out that way, Scarlet Cinema would indeed be a cool 60th birthday present to yourself!

With these cool RED products, its a great time to still be working in this industry, isn't it? I'm having more fun than at any time I remember in my career...

Jim,

I thoroughly understand your position on what you posted. It makes very good business sense. In these strained economic times everyone needs to temper their enthusiasm with the realities of the marketplace. FWIW - I don't manufacture camera equipment, but if I did, given today's economic stresses, right now I'm sure I'd be posting things like you did to start this thread.

Thanks for the candor Jim...telling it like it is...to me its a pleasure to do business with someone who communicates clearly and regularly...much appreciated.

HA! This is brilliant. I will remember this until the day I die...

LOL - glad you liked that one!

Here's another one that dovetails nicely with it:

"Live each day as if its your last...and someday you'll be right"

I try to live by that...

Thanks Steve,

Most of my shooting career was in the 70's and early 80's shooting 16mm for video when a decent EFP video rig was an RCA TK76 tied to a truck. I mostly shoot DV for fun now, but am looking forward to the potential of the baby Scarlet.

25 years of tai chi and healthy lifestyle have kept me relatively young too. By the way, I highly recommend tai chi as a means of improving handheld camera work for those who have the patience to keep at it.

Yes David, you'll most likely have some real fun putting Scarlet through its paces. Though I obviously have shot a lot with RED One, and will definitely be getting Epic X and FF35 Epic, I have to say that the possibilities with Scarlet really fascinate me. I plan to get at least two fixed lens Scarlet and at least one FF35 Scarlet.

On fitness, sounds like you have it figured out well. Funny you mentioned Tai Chi. I don't do it, but many times when asked about the biomechanics of good hand held camera work, I've likened it to doing Tai Chi - knees bent, body centered, fluid movement, etc.

As you know, rest diet, and exercise are the keys to slowing the aging process. I workout at least five days a week: gym, surfing, mountain biking, skateboarding, hiking, etc.

Back to the thread topic, I see the wisdom in Jim's post. When you do get Scarlet plan on having the time of your life with it.

Patience

Patience

This time last year, when we were just about to go into production on our feature, there was a major crew shortage in Western Australia. There were four or five features being made (we usually only make one or two a year.) On top of that, there were several TV series and countless documentaries. It was chaos, and getting equipment was virtually impossible. There weren't even enough catering companies to go around - we had to start our own.

This year, almost nothing is being made. You can rent equipment for peanuts, and crew will work for minimum wage. Western Australia is probably one of the last places to be hit by the global downturn (as we have a lot of gold and iron here) but the psychological effect of these economic downturns is wide-reaching. People freeze.

Yes, production continues, but nothing thrives. When Disney cancels a Blockbuster series, it makes you wonder what else is going to happen.

If what I see here is reflected elsewhere to any degree, then Jim's decision makes sense. The last thing I want to see is Red collapsing because they produce too many cameras for a market that is in hibernation. Better to be patient.

There are plenty of R1s out there, and I'll be more than happy to shoot my next feature with what we have access to. It's a great camera. When the other stuff if available, I'll be happy as well, but there is no rush.

Nice, finaly the Red-boys can calm down and relax.
Who knows, maybe a new super SDK for Linux will apper sooner now.

The theme of this news is totally positive to me: RED is focusing on the long run of building a sustainable business. A few months extra can only help great products. Once again you have the courage of your convictions to focus on the high road of real quality and permanent innovation. -Thanks for that!

Well it basically sums up as this:

Anyone who already owns a RED ONE is happy and willing to wait.
Anyone who was looking to get an EPIC was expecting to wait until mid-2010.
And anyone who doesn't own a RED and was looking to buy a Scarlet is ticked off.

Kind of shows where the focus of demand is. I'm all for slowing down on overtime to save costs and not burn out people. Just if you're going to take a delay i'm hoping it's going to be on Epic and not as much on Scarlet. All those Scarleteers, being your average consumer mob (as intended) have a habit of using pitchforks and torches when they feel threatened. Hehe.

Out of curiosity. Any info on which cameras might be delayed more than others would be great. I'll be waiting for new info from you folks. Keep on trucking.

-Brian

Hehe. Scarleteers. J-I-M (He's the best) J-A-N (rocks the west) N-A-R-D
I agree that the Scarlet users will have to jump on to other cameras sooner rather than later. The new Panasonics or the EX1 are obvious choices. But in truth, Red's workflow is hardly up to snuff for the soccer moms who are part of Scarlet's target group. So a little more time to get things clicking like clockwork isn't a bad idea. Nothing like a lot PO'd minivan driving women with cleats in their hands to ruin ones otherwise nice day.

Adam, how are you finding rolling shutter and the lens, may I ask?

I wouldn't dare to contradict you, Mr. J - it would be like the luggage telling the pilot how to fly the plane.

However, it appears your decision is made based on projections in an industry you are trying to overturn (or at least severely upset). Thus, can their numbers truly be your numbers?

You have not (to my knowledge) opened up Scarlet and EPIC to pre-orders. Does your webmaster track each time I go to the Store page and look in Cameras and leave the site upon seeing only Red One?

And, again, your decision to release first the highest-cost cameras seems to me a bit antithetical to conquering a consumer market, or not being about the numbers. (Don't get me wrong, I know the numbers have to be there.)

I am not jockeying to change your mind - I am focused on writing at this time, and am not ready to begin production on anything (mine or others). I am trying to keep my crappy day-job just so I can feed my wife and dog (I don't need feeding, I get all the force-feeding I need at work).

I just wanted to offer my thoughts on your post in hopes you might (a) explain more and teach the unwashed about life at your level, (b) have some ideas based on my puny thoughts, or (c) say to yourself, "we gotta hire this guy"... :w00t:
