Hello everyone time for me to upgrade from my terrible hdmi monitor.

I am making this list to make up my mind, sharing here hoping it might be useful to others.
Please do contribute if you have any suggestions.

Monitors requirements to make this list:

- sdi connectivity
- rgb parade, wave form ( or histogram at least )
- ips or oled
- around 1k price range

I have found 4 monitors with similar specs and software features that meet these criteria:

All prices are with battery plate and sun hood included.

The Lilliput, while much cheaper, only has histogram display and no scopes.

The Ikan D7w 270usd difference with the D5w for increased contrast, brightness and display size is worth it to me.

But at that price you can get much more:

Without getting into the recording and storage capabilities, the Odyssey 7 is a more complete monitor with the increased display size, contrast, wide color gamut, and connectivity.

I have yet to find a better bargain.

Let me know if you have any suggestions
looking forward to your input

Another few things to consider with the oddyssey would be that you have to buy and use their ssd (400/ 256gb), there is no prores recording, and from what I can tell, there is no included battery or battery sled.

It also has HDMI I/O, OLED, and a larger and higher res screen than the blade. The form factor also looks better and it has a magnesium shell which appears to be much more durable than the plastic one on the blade.

When looking for a monitor, you have a big decision to make. Do you want it just for reference or do you want it for color accuracy. Color accurate monitors (not color grading specific) tend to be more expensive, whoever, if you find a decent monitor with an RGB rec709 LUT or preset, you'll be much happier.

I know from my own personal experience, it's always a bummer to have to explain to the director, oh the footAge doesn't look like that, come over here to the camera and look at this monitor....kinda embarrassing.

I second not purchasing the AC7..horrible color rendition. The Dp7 Pro OLED however has great color accuracy since it has the RGB rec709 preset.

Regarding lilliput, you get what you pay for. Their monitors are more targeted towards the DSLR film makers. I wouldn't purchase this, I've used it with a DSLR, and still wasn't happy.

Ikan an has been trying to broaden their market and generate higher end monitors. Most if their panels are Chinese panels, rebranded.

I saw saw both the blade and the 7Q at NAB and spoke with each rep extensively. The 7Q is a much more significant investment since, like RED, only offer proprietary media, which is Expensive!!! You could get a full Blade kit for around $1400, whereas the 7Q you're well above 2K. Yes, the panel on the 7Q is bigger and looks better, but you pay for that, and personally, at that price, if go with the DP7 Pro OLED. SmallHD will be offering proxy recording on their DP7 models soon.

Lots of things to think about.

I think the Odyssey is going to be very interesting. LARGE on-board monitor. With Proxy recording built it. Fantastic. It wouldn't surprise if we start hearing a lot more about it in 2014.

am looking into this right now as well and keep coming back to the smallHD oled screens....unfortunately the DP7 pro sx is 2300$ but seems to be the one....
the odyssey is feature packed for a great price but i don't necessarily need proxy recording and if i did i would probably go with the BMD shuttle which uses regular SSD (cheaper and easier to work with in post)....
the thing that amazes me is that smallHD is the only company even mentioning wireless integration (a maybe soon paralinx module)....this should be a no brainer IMO
so for me the monitor should have the best possible image (best color, widest gamut, contrast,...) along with basic features (input, output obviously) and the basic software (focus assist, histogram, vectors,...)...sturdy enough for field use (this might be the one big thing i really dislike about the odyssey, the inputs sticking out like that, completely open, uncovered?)
i also think about that this might be the piece of equipment that is THE point of interaction with a client....

I'm quite intrigued by the Odyssey7. I don't particularly need proxy recording, although I guess it's nice to have…but the rest of the package is pretty compelling for the $$. The local AC's around here all love the TV Logic 056, but that is seeming like pretty old technology to me. So I keep going back and forth…Odyssey…TV Logic…Odyseey…TV Logic. For those concerned about the physical layout of the Odyssey7, check out the Nebtek Power Bracket.

I'm thinking like you Tom. The TV logic is a couple of years old. Not willing to invest in it myself.

I don't usually need proxies either, but sometimes clients need to walk away with edit friendly QTs. This device looks like a great 2 for 1: robust AC monitor, and proxies if you need it. Versatile.

yes, agree on the nebtek bracket..looks like a must for the odyssey...

Patrick, I was specifically talking about the TV Logic 056 monitor when I called it "old technology". The 058 monitor is obviously a different story with full 1920x1080 resolution. But, as far as I can tell, the 058 is not actually available yet?

I will have one this coming week and am hopeful (from what I have seen so far.) .I will report back what I find.

great looking forward to your review, please do post here with pics

the features are pretty straightforward, the critical aspect to me is the viewing angle.
They say 160degrees in the specs but something to see for yourself.

Full disclosure: I work for Convergent Design, manufacturer of the Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q.

Some informational points.

Don't confuse the Odyssey7 and Odyssey7Q models. The 7Q includes RAW recording from several cameras that can output this signal (not RED, as that is for internal recording). Both the 7 and 7Q feature the same excellent 7.7" OLED monitor with 1280x800 resolution, REC709 & DCI-P3 color gamut, focus assists, false color, waveform, histogram, and vectorscope (coming soon), The 7 is not upgradable to the 7Q but if you do not need the extra features of the 7Q then you can save a considerable amount of money. The 7Q lists for US$2295 and the Odyssey7 lists for US$1295.

While there currently is no ProRes recording on the Odyssey models, things could change... And if you are just looking for a monitor then you don't have to worry about that or the price of media.

There are several mounting and power solutions available. I recently shot a video showing all of the current options. You can see it here:
http://www.convergent-design.com/Su...abId/209/VideoId/9/Odyssey-Power-Options.aspx

There are also hoods available. We will soon have our own and Westside AV has a nice design. I believe a Hoodman 7" will fit an Odyssey properly.

Lastly, while we do not officially call our OLED display a reference monitor, I do humbly believe it to give the finest image available in any small monitor. In fact we have held it up next to a $25K Sony OLED reference monitor and the new Canon $30K 4K monitor and the images matched our little Odyssey very closely.

Mitch - is the normal Odyssey7 shipping yet?

As you mention, it's a great price for an OLED and comes with the bonus of doubling up as a compressed Proxy recorder (DNxHD) - and I don't need the 7Q options as RAW from the Epic is my main source... but for some quick turnaround/HD only jobs, I think the vanilla 7 will work fine. What are the approx SSD costs?

I am a little lazier than the 'best Redusers;-)... A quick review and a thumbs up or down is probably more realistic.

Viewing angle spec is very very misleading..I believe you only have to get to 10% of max contrast to be ok to inc the degree spec. So 160 sounds a bit worrying.

I am also going to try the odyssey (as it sounds fantastic... Mitch hasn't steered me wrong in the past so I am very hopeful)... my idea is the TV logic as alt VF monitor (used alongside oled bomb and 5inch touch) and the odyssey as a directors monitor or DIT tool. ... Maybe even used as video playback for non q-take jobs.

Regards

M

Mitch.. Sorry to be off topic but how did you find the 4k canon?

We are still looking for a monitor for grading in a low(ish) cost suite and I am very confused... At the moment I am using a mix of a Tvlogic XVM and old BVMD and a Pioneer Kuro and even though it works ok for me it is a bit of a mess...

I'd love to buy a 4k monitor at 30inch plus that works without excuses for at least 3 years... The catch is that 3 years only works if it is under £20k which the canon is probably not going to be...

I probably should have bought a cheap oled flanders (their half price deal for the 25inch) and waited a year or 2 for things to settlle other 4k panel market?

Maybe CD should step up?;-)

Thanks

The Odyssey7 is not yet shipping, but will do so in Q1 of 2014 -- we hope earlier rather than later. The US list prices on the SSDs are $395 for the 256G and $795 for the 512G. We test & certify all of our drives for use in the Odyssey recorders. They are power-protected so they will not corrupt should you lose power while recording. They also maintain their data rates from empty to full capacity (other drop to less than half their spec rating when at 50% capacity). Still a lot cheaper than other storage.
