  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

~ 1'000usd Sdi field monitors options 2013

Have the Samurai Blade installed in my underwater housing, using it for focus assist and ProRes proxy files, very happy with it. Some very rough seas on a recent job, the housing got banged around a little more than I care for, Blade held up fine, very robust unit.

I am a little lazier than the 'best Redusers;-)... A quick review and a thumbs up or down is probably more realistic.

Viewing angle spec is very very misleading..I believe you only have to get to 10% of max contrast to be ok to inc the degree spec. So 160 sounds a bit worrying.

I am also going to try the odyssey (as it sounds fantastic... Mitch hasn't steered me wrong in the past so I am very hopeful)... my idea is the TV logic as alt VF monitor (used alongside oled bomb and 5inch touch) and the odyssey as a directors monitor or DIT tool. ... Maybe even used as video playback for non q-take jobs.

Regards

M

I do my best to keep you on track, Michael. :-)

The Odyssey viewing angle is extremely wide, although I will note that the colors begin to shift a bit as you get past 100 degrees or so. Still it is quite wide, worlds away from the days when one had to sit dead center to get anything close to accurate.

Another nifty thing about Odyssey is its use as a wireless monitor. Even with two SSDs loaded, it weighs less than 1.4 pounds, so it is quite comfortable handheld. Add a Teradek Bolt or a Paralinx receiver and you're off. We do have battery backs available as noted in a post above, and the solution from Ocean Video extends down to protect the SDI & HDMI connectors (someone noted this as a concern) as well as provide mounting for a handle or strap. Some battery backs can provide additional power for the receivers or our RMT (remote) port on the Odyssey can supply the needed power.

One plus for the Odyssey7Q is that it has the Multi-Stream mode. This can show up to FOUR HD video signals on the screen at once or switch between them. Great for multi-camera shoots (aren't they all these days?). If you put up two images at once side-by-side, then the waveform can display below them and act as a comparator tool to help match exposure and framing. I know that this is less of an issue with a Digital Cinema camera such as RED, but it still is a helpful & useful tool, and if you are just using the video out for a quick finish it becomes a huge asset. This function is free as a viewer in the 7Q and an optional record mode will be available soon which will offer recording in a high quality popular codec as up to four separate but simultaneous files. You can even use the 7Q as a live switcher to get a program edit recorded along with the ISOs and an EDL. Kinda crazy for a little onboard monitor but that's the way we roll.

Mitch.. Sorry to be off topic but how did you find the 4k canon?

We are still looking for a monitor for grading in a low(ish) cost suite and I am very confused... At the moment I am using a mix of a Tvlogic XVM and old BVMD and a Pioneer Kuro and even though it works ok for me it is a bit of a mess...

I'd love to buy a 4k monitor at 30inch plus that works without excuses for at least 3 years... The catch is that 3 years only works if it is under £20k which the canon is probably not going to be...

I probably should have bought a cheap oled flanders (their half price deal for the 25inch) and waited a year or 2 for things to settlle other 4k panel market?

Maybe CD should step up?;-)

Thanks

Michael L

The Canon was quite impressive but I must confess that I did not have a lot of time to explore its capabilities. And it certainly is outside your budget constraints.

We at CD have a few fun things up our sleeves, including a product that I believe will be useful to just about anyone who shoots on a RED camera. This is not a replacement for anything that We sell or that RED is shipping, think of it as an attractive companion item.

Look for info in, oh, perhaps early April! ;-)

is there a difference between SDI and HDMI in terms of capability with the Odyssey 7? on the website it says that HDMI is 30fps only? the more i am looking, the harder it is to get around it....looks like a really great product....i really wish wireless capabilities were built in....
regardless: any way to arrange a reduser group buy for the Odyssey7?

The HDMI is indeed limited to 30fps. Note that if you do send your signal in via SDI then the Odyssey has FIVE outputs for the signal, two dedicated SDI outs, two SDI I/O and one HDMI (yes, the converter is built in).

I'll have to look into a group buy concept.

Mitch how many FPS can the Odyssey do via SDI? Thx!

It depends on the given camera and what they can throw out. Am I correct that the REDs can output 1080/60p? I haven't checked that spec in a while. We can accept that.

I'd jump on a group buy.

Mitch, when will prores be a supported format?

Guys, I appreciate the enthusiam but let me see what's even possible. We don't sell direct, only through our dealer network, and we wouldn't want to upset any of them. It really wouldn't be fair. Let me see what's possible.

As far as our compressed codecs, they are coming. I'm not comfortable giving timelines. Hey this is REDuser -- we should all understand that! ;-)

group buy or not are we going to be able to buy these in the next weeks ? or months? made up my mind and need one sooner then later....

We are currently not a REDuser sponsor so I tread lightly here. This information has been published elsewhere so I think it's okay but don't want to cross any boundaries. I'm just going to factually answer this question.

The Odyssey7Q is currently shipping and we forecast fulfilling our current backorder by the end of January.

The Odyssey7 is forecast to begin shipping in February with backorder fulfilled in March.

You would need to talk to your preferred dealer to place an order. Some dealers have stocking orders, meaning that they are part of our backorder list but those units have not yet been allocated to clients. Therefore it is possible that there may be some units available currently or soon, but I would not know.
