  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

You have different ways of assigning zoom/iris control/focus do different areas on the camera. For example you could put the focus to the ring on the lens, zoom to the Rocker on the sidehandle and ISO to the wheel or something on the sidehandle? I could be mistaken though. I know I've read around and seen something like that. You basically have different places you can assign it. You can also control the settings with a RedMote. I usually don't use zooms so that is probably close to something I'd use.

Man I need to find something to occupy my time better haha. I get work done faster to come back here and check the Recon thread hoping to see Jim or Jarred posting it's release information...That day will come soon perhaps?

I know exactly what you mean. I hope for the best that it will be released in 2011 but I'm expecting the worse that it will be another half/entire year... but yeah....

Right there with you. I was planning on selling my 7D to help pay for it. But have since changed my mind and plan on keeping it for TL's and just to be able and shoot, incase we are looking at another year. I know they want to stay in the pro market, but that could really alienate alot of who is left in the indie/action sports/pro-sumer market who do intend on buying one. I for one don't have the luxury of getting another camera, an FS100, F3, or a Panny, then later being able to afford a Scarlet when they release. And my shooting schedule is so random at timing and location that rental really isn't an option.

I for one will hold out more than likely. I like what RED is doing and what they represent. I may not be a PRO/high end cinematographer yet but plan on getting there someday and feel this is a good step in every way possible. It's just been quiet. The one thing I want to know is really if we're looking at this year or next. Reason being there are some significant price jumps in modular accessories. And if we are looking at next year for the camera, would we beable to only buy the body and get the accessories (DSMC Sidehandle, Redmote, 5" touch screen) before the price increase at the start of the next year to save a little bit. Something that was interesting with that update is they didn't list the Scarlet body, or Scarlet in it at all. Which would either mean they fully intend to release it in 2011, or they really have no idea when it'll be ready...

I know they'll take care of us either way. I'd just like to find the most affordable way possible to afford the camera, and if it means buying accessories separately before it's release. I'd fully intend too, if they show up in the store that is.

Epic-S wasn't either. Honestly, I think it was directly targeted at Epic-X/M purchasers and only Epic-X/M purchasers. This is because of the "new" PR policy of only talking details when they know the details. So I'd take it to mean they haven't been able to sit down and really crunch the numbers and come up with hard and fast pricing for the Scarlets (or Epic-S) yet. I can imagine at this point, after the price changes and so on and all the flack they have caught for that, RED would rather just post it once and be done with it than give more estimations that too many people are bound to take as fact.

Probably the case. I was a fan at 3k for 3k. Still a fan for whatever it costs...within reason.

That's freakin nice! I new I read that too, that there will be a zoom rocker, awesome!
I zoom during the shot only on steadicam, and I don't have a focus puller :) so I need AF and power zoom;
men I can't wait to get my litlle scarlets :)

As I said, not wanting them to go back to the drawing board, just hoping they had used the extra time to upgrade, I always wanted the camera as quick as relevant, give or take 6 months. I am a futurist, I see how things are going, how the market is going. I knew that 3K high volume appeal was coming to an end at the announcement, that to squash the competition you had to do what they wouldn't for the people, to provide something so Jazzy they will buy. I also know that in the future we will have shd close to 4K TV's to watch what we film today, and as previouse people that have seen shd have commented, it will look so much better than 2k. So, you allways need new content to take full advantage of new hardware and what people will actually be watching on in future, not the other way about. The current situation is different though, shd like resolutions displays have been deliberately held back for the last 4 or more years, 3D HDTV flopped as under whelming, shd 3D probably would not have, but now 3D hdtv has poisoned the well a bit. The economy has gone drastically for a while, you can still in a depressed economic climate if there is a need for a product everybody wants before it gets that bad. Now shd cameras are coming, post fhd cameras shall be cheap. 4K is going to give a bit of mid volume boost to some non cinema professionals, but not a mass volume boost, 4K is just a matter of survival in larger volume markets now rather than an exclusive selling point. It is all business, hopes and considerations. Previouse hopes for 10-100 thousand sales for Red, which can halve prices, rather than 10 thousand. Cinema people don't understand how much bigger the wider professional (and tag along enthusiast) market is then theirs. On the business side it is about how much you can sell to establish your foothold and make money, which combines marketing. On the buyers side it is bang for buck, which needs volume manufacturing to reduce the price of quality.

Don't get me wrong, I expect the scarlet series to sell in volume virtually unmatched by any other cinema camera in history, and be a big success as is. The past is the past, and a few economic hiccups have intervened.

For those that wanted something to "read" from last year. This is what I am looking at for a second cheap personal camera, read the first spec line:

Which happens to be close to the width of the lower end 2560 wide shd format some want to push. The TV companies should have avoided 1080i and gone through 720p down this path eventually in the first place, now 1440p shd is more irrelevant.

I always hate format wars. SHDTV is the future. Or wait...is it going to be WQHDTV? Or UHDTV? Or XHDTV...which is different from SHDTV how? Oooh, how about QFHDTV?

At least RED is giving us the ammunition now to fight the war in the future.
 
Michael, I have never seen a TV format that is 5k across ;) . Shd is the future, true uhd 32mp will be less noticeable improvement until you have really big TV's 4 times bigger again. I am a researcher and designer, and have clocked the upper end of resolution to around 70k surround from memory. Have an interesting few decades on that ;) .

I would not expect to hear any Scarlet news until Epic-X cameras start shipping.
 
I think until the steady production of Epic-X is secured, the RED team's eye and mouth will be on the subject of Epic-X and Epic-X alone. Once production gets settled in and is no longer of critical and immediate concern, we will hear more about Epic-S and the Scarlets as R&D is finalized.
 
Well, it looks like that day has about come, with Epic-X shipping probably by this Friday.

I don't think there's any more R&D though on Scarlet. From what I understand, it's only fixing the mysterious "small lens issue", then parts arriving followed by assembly. And if today's post on Epic-X is any indication, Red really can go from parts to out the door within a week, which is damned impressive, so that's not a problem. The lens issue seems to be the $64 question.
