  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

10 Scarlet Questions with Joseph Hutson... Take 2.

David, Those lens are nice, but rather pricy. I would not take the chances I do to get great shots, and often I don't have time to PROPERLY put my gear away after changing lenses. A lot of what I do is following action around, which is usually very intense situation during wildlife captures etc, where there is no time to stop what is going to change lenses. If I don't keep up with the action, the action will get me! Honestly I'd destroy that lens in a week. I'm very limited on space to even keep a pelican case handy.

An image to describe a not so unusual day at work for a series I made for Animal Planet. This is an aborted rhino capture... keep in mind that really pissed off rhino is lifting a 500kg box, and six of us on top about foot of the ground with her head (me with the camera). The next time we tried to capture her, she bolted 1000 meters up steep mountain with all of us desperately running after her on foot.

What do you use for video camera and lenses now?

Aside from the Canon L-series I dare not say in this forum. I've used a bunch of option over the last few years in wait of red. I can afford to break few of them a year which surprisingly I haven't in a while. The network accepts it, but it is not my preferred camera. Weight, length of battery/storage and choice of glass are the biggest thing that matters, otherwise I would not be able to keep up these guys. I'm really trying to up my game cinematically speaking, so partly why I want to up image quality. My cinematography has come a long way, and gets noted by National Geographic and Discovery etc who I sell to.

That looks like so much fun!

Jarred,

Will the front of the lens on the fixed 8x be fixed itself, with a small flange for a matt box to stay in position, or will the front of the lens spin as you focus?

Simon

Simon

its fixed so you can clamp stuff onto it. 77mm threads on the inside.

Jarred, is there any chance of adding a Facebook style 'Like' button on the forums to work with users post's, so that people can 'Like' comments, so we don't clog up the board with pointless replies like this one?!

I second this, and maybe a tagging system for addressing questions/ideas/suggestions/comments at certain people? Like Twitter or Facebook using the "@........" method? Maybe this is a suggestion for Jason or Brooke? If only I could tag them to direct the question at them, with a message in their inbox :-)

I understand Simon's point, however, placing a facebook style like button will "dumb down" the whole forum.

How did we go from Scarlet info to facebook integration...

Sorry if this has been answered, but with the 2/3 interchangeable Scarlet will their be automatic control of the different lens like on the fixed.
Focus, tracking etc.. Also if their is a zoom produced will it have automatic and manual controls like the fixed.
I understand the amount of issues involved in producing a zoom like this must be huge.
Anyway I think the Interchangeable 2/3 is a great idea.

The mini-primes, which are the basic mount for the 2/3 removable, are manual primes, no electronics in them. So no tracking or focus assist.

They have said they're making the Electronic Canon and Nikon mounts for the Scarlet, but idk about any other mounts, that are just dumb(no-electronics) mounts.

Is the touch screen red pro 5.0 mandatory to set up electronic rack focusing (in regards to the fixed scarlet)? Can one specify the two key focal points either w/ the red remote or on camera controls? Such as a mouse icon scrolling throughout a prior red or third party display instead of physically touching a touch screen?

Take 1?

No stabilization in the lens. Lots of sensors feeding metadata for post stabilization.. like the new Adobe 5.5 Stabilizer ( which is pretty incredible when used right.. and that isn't even using lens data... yet. :) )

I assume we may eventually be able to import all this sensor and lens data into Nuke and other vfx apps for camera tracking purposes, yes? :)
