Joseph hit me with another 10 Scarlet questions this week.. Thought I would share.

(1) Since the announcement of the S35 Scarlet being moved to the EPIC lineup (EPIC-S), there seems to be a lot of confusion regarding the removable lens-Scarlet. Am I right in my understanding that the removable lensScarlet is still supposed to come out? Can we end the rumors of the removable lens scarlet plans being thrown out the window?

Scarlet 2/3" removable and the Mini-Primes that go with it are still on track and is due to be released after the 8x fixed Scarlet ships.

(2) Upon first announcement of the Removable Scarlet, the mounting options listed were "Mini RED Mount, B4 Mount, C-Mount". I understand that in "IzzY", you used the Removable Scarlet with a 100mm RED PRO Prime. Are there plans for RED to offer a PL mount or any other lens options (such as Nikon/Canon mount) to the public?

The camera will ship with the RED Mini-PL mount. More lens mount options will come after release.

(3) I'm not asking for pricing, but what are the chances of having a "Package Price" for the C-Scarlet as was first mention for the F-Scarlet (Fixed Scarlet). Good, not-so-good, or bad chance?

It is veryhard for us to comment on pricing right now with the current supply situation in Japan. However, there will definitely be a Scarlet/ Mini-Prime Lens package available.

(4) I'm not asking for delivery dates of either Scarlet model, but does it look like the C-Scarlet & F-Scarlet will be released coincidentally? If not, would you mind sharing your current "guess" on the time difference and what might be the cause for discrepancy between the two?

The Scarlet 2/3" removable will be released after the 8x fixed lens Scarlet

(5) Will the C-Scarlet come standard with a Mini RED Mount, with people having the option to additionally purchase say a C-Mount? Or will people be able to choose their first mount without being required to get a 2nd mount in which they potentially may never need the first?

Standard with RED Mini-PL mount. No option to ship with a different mount installed.

(6) There's been an expression of desire for a 12mm RED Mini Prime by some. Would RED be open to going beyond the set of 6.5mm, 8mm, 16mm 25mm, 50mm, 75mm Mini Primes or will additional focal lengths need to be found by lenses already on the market? (You just can't please everybody, now can you? hehe.)

Currently we are focusing on producing the focal lengths we have already announced.

(7) Are there plans for a RED Mini Zoom lens with full manual capabilities (iris ring, zoom ring, focus ring) to complement the RED Mini Primes? I realize the 8X Electronic Zoom on the F-Scarlet doesn't come off and a version of that cannot be offered for the C-Scarlet. This is not what I am asking for.

A full manual zoom lens will not be released at launch.

(8) There was mention long ago of 1080p RGB recording which is scaled from the entire frame...no cropping the sensor. Ted once likened it as a specialized RED Rocket which does this in-camera, but takes away the RAW possibilities (and of course the 3K resolution) in post. What's the status on this?

Scaled REDCODE RGB is still on the list.

(9) Long ago, there was mention of using a "Wide Angle/Telephoto Converter lenses to enhance the possibilities for the F-Scarlet (FF35 Equivalent of 28mm-224mm). Is this something you foresee only 3rd parties to offer, or will RED be offering something of their own?

We are testing numerous 3rd party options right now.. many are very good at very fair prices. Currently we have no reason to introduce our own.

(10) Delivery. What's the current plan on Scarlet distribution? Through people like B&H, or strictly through RED? Will previously existing customers receive special "dibs" or are we starting off fresh? Pre-orders or only available after the "In Stock" listing on RED.com?

Direct from RED at the beginning. No Pre-orders. We hope to make alot of them very quickly so there shouldn't much of a waiting list.

I will answer 10 more... make them good... Just don't ask about pricing or delivery dates... :)

Assuming you've shot with both lenses(the zoom and mini-primes)..how do they compare..speed wise..image quality wise...?

what will come in the basic package for around $6k that youve been quoting at NAB this year? ( i.e. side handle, any CF/SSD cards? ect.)

Are there any plans to put a variation of the Dragon sensor into Scarlet?

Assuming you've shot with both lenses(the zoom and mini-primes)..how do they compare..speed wise..image quality wise...?

There are 5 mini-primes that will be available at launch.

6mm 1.5
8mm 1.5
16mm 1.5
25mm 1.5
50mm 2.9

In terms of sharpness.. The design of the Zoom is incredible, we were able to bring it well over 100 lp/mm to match the mini primes, so the two lenses will match very well in terms of sharpness. The speed however on the primes is a clear advantage as one would expect.

A question for us all: Would we rather pay $5,000 for any sort of sensor upgrade? Or would we want to pay $5,000 for an altogether new "brain". If I'm not mistaken, this kind of reasoning brought about the first inception of the DSMC. Why not make almost everything about the camera be totally modular for each sequential generation.

I am personally more than content with the options which the DSMC will bring me when a new generation comes out...

It'd be great to hear your recommendations on which wide and tele converters from third party manufacturers are suited the best for the fixed Scarlet, and which in your opinion give the best bang for buck. This would be extremel useful as there are so many of them out there in wildly different price categories.

And as always, thanks for the info and stay strong providing us with cameras that will allow many of us to live our dreams.

Will there be any APIs released to 3rd party developers that will allow for applications that communicate to Scarlet (especially fixed) and control the lens and the brain?

Is Red developing any tools specifically for "fly-by-wire" control of their own?

Thanks for taking the time out to field questions, Jarred. :}

How does the 2/3" sensor compare to the Red One/Epic sensor in terms of specs? I know that the photosites are smaller. What kind of performance have you been able to get in regards to signal/noise, DR, etc?

So far the Zunow is hard to beat on the wide side of things... It's pricey though. There are a ton of them though and we have gotten most of them we could.. but a general rule of thumb is that if its over $800 its excellent... if its over $300 most people will be very happy with it, and the $100 ebay single element specials will disappoint unless you are going for the high CA, high distortion, screwed-up-image look.

It was previously stated that R1 owners have first option which leaves the possibility that all scarlets in the beginning can be snapped up by rental houses. Is there a limit to the number of scarlets an R1 owner can order as part of their first option?

Depends on how quickly we are making them. We will try and ensure nobody abuses the system.

I have a timeline question that is more global than specific to Scarlet. Are the Epic/Scarlet lines shipping independently of eachother or will they follow a priority order say Epic-X, Epic-S, Scarlet-F, Scarlet-C with the next not shipping till the prior is finished etc...I've always been curious about the rollout plans for the 4 cameras. Or are the Epics shipping whey they are ready and the Scarlets when they are ready regardless of eachother? Confused yet?

Another quickie...will we get some advance notice on when cameras will be available for sale? Don't wanna go to bed early and wake up with no more in stock! LOL!

A little premature to answer this one... we have a milestone internal software build coming in 2 weeks with a proper sensor calibration for the Scarlet that will dramatically improve not only the color science but also SNR and Dynamic Range.

Sweet ... fair as you can be is all I expect. I would hate to see scarlets being sold on ebay at higher prices because of a shortage.

Another question if you have time ...

Going from 4k to 5k we saw the red's sensors increase in surface area. I'm wondering - Will the image circle projected from the fixed zooms and mini-primes cover the possibility of different or slightly larger sensor upgrades at later dates?
(ie is a >3k in the master plan)

absolutely..

a little hint... you will know when we are getting closer when you start seeing them out there shooting in other people's hands other than ours :)

You didn't specify which scarlet. :D

How is the FF35 "Scarlet" coming along? Has the Tsunami affected its development or was it too early in R&D to be noticeably affected?

We don't hold finished product back... that is a " normal " company thing to do. We will ship when the cameras are ready... but remember we are developing them at different times with different production timelines.. EPIC-S for example is new different hardware than the EPIC-X and EPIC-M is different hardware than Epic-X. its not like we are just putting different stickers on the same camera depending on the date :)

BTW.. I have no idea what a Scarlet-C is.
