  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

1.8" SSD Module

1500 for 128 GB? A bit pricey, eh?

Begging your pardon, compare that to the same capacity SSD (128 GB) RED-RAM in the store for $ 4500.
This is 1/3 the cost - and with a good explanation of the modifications over generic / consumer product. I'll take something I can trust footage to any day.

Awesome news. SSDs are the way of the future.

Ahh It's ALIVE!!!! Awesome work RED team!

How Fast is it?
Will it be abel to handle all the red codes at maximum speed?

Seriously can't wait for Epic. This is torture!

fibre

fibre

Great to hear the fibre module is still on the cards.
Will the module process menue control data as well as picture data?

Red light on the side of the module is one, therefore it's plugged all the way in. It sticks out.

so its this a RAID SSD - 2 drives like the REDRAM or just one single drive?
is this SSD the fastest media we'll have?

is there any way to offload a redmag without the 1.8" red station reader?

Of course I will eventually be getting one for faster offload times but if i want to get shooting sooner rather than later I will need to cut out things like a red station from my first round of purchases

I hate to be the guy who asks the same question twice... but the mag does go all the way in... right? If not, you guys ought to consider either a top-loading design [not ideal] or moving the connectors from the "end" of the mag to the "side" of the mag and load the magazine in a vertical orientation from the side of the camera. Since you're already building the magazine [rather than using blank media, thank goodness], it shouldn't be too hard to move the connectors around if that is the case.

I'm glad to see that you guys are building true magazines [read: something that doesn't look like what somebody might already own] instead of going with off-the-shelf [looking] media on steroids. On dozens of occasions over the past few years I've had producers show up on set with "really fast CF cards from Samy's" for me to use when they get sick of paying thousands of dollars per week to rent magazines [er, CF cards]. The greater the perceptive difference from a recognizable item, the less likely it is that somebody's going to try and cut a corner to save a buck.

Other things to consider on the magazine:

eInk-style persistent displays that show roll number and used/remaining capacity. A footage dial, if you will. You could go entirely overboard with it and put information like the date of exposure, number of clips, timebase/format information, etc. But if I had to choose, the roll number ["A001"] and a footage counter [even a vague bar graph] would be a fantastic addition to the magazine.

A write-protect switch![!!!!!!]

A retracting dust cover for the connection interface.

Can't wait for Tattoo. It's going to be such a fantastic opportunity for the working community to pass ideas and feedback that will be able to make it into the final products!

you guys ought to consider either a top-loading design

:(

Oooops. Brook, You also said it.

A retracting dust cover for the connection interface.

Dust and water would be very bad for a "top-loading" design.

I'd rather have it stick out the side rather than water and dust falling in from the top.

This is the one Module that should be just like the CF Module.

I think it's a viable replacement for the CF Module.

Why can't it be an option for people who do not wish to grow the camera longer?

DSMC/Stills people who still want high speed storage.

Thanks

Michael T.

eInk-style persistent displays ...

A write-protect switch![!!!!!!]

Love the e-ink idea on a Mag. Perfect use for simple B&W low/no voltage display with slow refresh. Will eliminate a lot of paper tape and sharpies on the tech bench.

Another thing I'd love displayed on it is where in the workflow each Mag is, i.e: "Empty" or "NEEDS BACK-UP" or "Downloading" or "Verified", etc.

I second the write protect switch suggestion!

Correct... mag sticks out.

Brook, top loading anything is horrible.. not only does it restrict rail systems etc. on top of the camera but just begs for moisture.

I do like the E-ink idea.. i have a few WD drives that have them and its great ( when they work ) Too late in the game to add those to these though.
