Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)
Everyone knows I have several personality disorders. That isn't a secret.
What may surprise you is that I have only read one book (cover to cover) in my life. True enough.
I glean, scan, pay attention, and keep my eyes and ears open... but I don't read books. Make no mistake, I can read...
When I 1st heard that PJ would shoot the Hobbit at 48fps... I was skeptical. To me, 24fps was "sometime". 48fps was "this morning".
I have to say that I am now a convert. The way this was shot (thank Andrew Lesnie), the VFX and Gollum... 48fps is "other worldly". In a good way. A way you...
I guess my post was a bit tongue in cheek. The caveat in the post was getting out Dragon and "the New Technology". The "New Technology" will take a bit of time... so apparently that means I won't be retiring tomorrow.
Sorry if my playful nature was taken wrong. There is still a lot to do...
It was a big day at REd today.
We loaded and projected the following trailers at RSH today:
The Hobbit (3rd trailer)
Oz
The Great Gatsby
Hitchcock
Flight
Parker
The Man with the Iron Fist
Stand Up Guys
I was truly blown away.

Many have asked how long RED ONEs with M-X sensors for 4,000 will last?
I don't know. That is up to you.
The RED ONE M-X sensor has shot a multitude of features, including The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Pirates 4. The idea that you can own a camera that could shoot this quality at this...
To me... any number of companies could change the world. It is about who wants to change the world, not who is just trying and keep up.
It is about vision for the future... it is about leading.
It is about caring for the consumer. It is about performance and price.
We aggressively throw...
As I said before, everything in the electronics world changes... usually for the better, cheaper and faster. EPIC and Scarlet just did. Right now.
We have built an incredibly efficient factory in Irvine, California and over time learned how to make EPICs in quantity, lowered our assembly...
I am going to give a tip of the hat to Sony tonight. These two camera announcements are significant.
While I do not see them as a threat to EPIC or Scarlet... I do see them as a threat to the conventional and outdated thinking of the industry that tried so hard to cling to "1080P and 2K are...
There is a reason we made a 5K camera.
The RED ONE was originally a 4K camera. With its Bayer pattern, it resolved 3.2K in a 4K package. Over 4 times the measured resolution of the best 1080P camera.
1080P is also a package size, not a measured resolution. The very best 1080P camera measures...
There is a conflict in my posts about when we will post the new pricing structure. In one post I said Nov. 1st and in another post I said Oct. 31st.
The correct date is Nov. 1st and at about 5pm PST.
Sorry for the confusion.

Just contemplating...
If you are looking at value in a camera... look to yourself.
Everything will get better and cheaper as time rolls on. It is up to you to make the most of this... especially when it comes to cameras.
Cameras are investments... an investment in you. Cameras alone do not...
Well... I have seen it for myself 1st hand. This combo is incredible. Truly.
Native ISO 2000. The tonality is incredible... as is the latitude. Wow.
The apparent resolution is off the chart due to using every pixel for luminance. Shooting 2K at 300 fps is a religious experience. 5K is...
Everything in the electronics world changes... usually for the better, cheaper and faster. EPIC just did.
We have learned how to make EPICs in quantity, lowered our assembly costs, found better suppliers and paid off our NRE.
That means we can continue to charge the same for an EPIC (and now...
I'm in Fiji shooting EPIC at 96 fps. This is what separates the men from the boys. If I ever wondered why we are doing this... 5k at 96 fps is the answer to all questions.
BTW... why I am not here in Fiji full time and giving all the RED keys to Jarred is a mystery to me. I've officially...
When I made the decision to start RED in 2005... complacency was the word of the day.
Canon had a virtual monopoly on the stills market. Arri owned film cameras and Sony was the defacto standard of just about everything professional and commercial digital. Remember tape? And 1080P was going...
Lots of captured resolution pays dividends.
Down-rezzing lowers noise. Up-rezzing magnifies it.
Down-rezzing also increases apparent sharpness. The converse is also true...
Shoot the best image you can capture in camera. That means the most resolution, most dynamic range possible. And...
Today I am totally excited. Watching the future unfold is thrilling. Being a small part of it is unreal.
I hope I am not over-stating when I say that RED seems to have been a key player in changing the industry over the past 5 years. Hold on... things are just about to get really...
RED footage has a TON of dynamic range. That pre-suposses that it is graded properly.
There are a million ways (apparently) to screw it up. It amazes me what some post houses can do to crush and clip RED footage.
Here is the litmus test. Open RED footage in REDCINE-X. Set REDcolor 3 and...
Sensors are the heart of every digital camera. The company that has the best sensor is most likely to have the best camera.
We at RED have put a tremendous amount of our resources towards sensor development. We do it in house. We do not have outside companies doing the work for us.
There...
