If a client pays you to film footage but specifies they are not buying rights, what right do you have to say how they use the footage? What say/rights do you have at all if no contract?

Trying to export brand new (Firmware) Helium footage on a UDF Redmag, to an external drive - Processing the R3D to Prores in Redcine (new and old versions). Get immediate error if attempting external drives. Only exports Prores QT to the Redmag itself. Is this an UDF issue or...??
