Hello all,

We finished this TVC late last year and I thought I'd share the outcome.

Shooting a person dressed in black, standing in snow in the middle of the day is a killer exposure test for any camera.

You need great (f-stop) range to retain detail in the snow as well the persons black wardrobe at the same time.

When I was first offered this project I did hesitate, I have shot 35mm in the snow a few times in the middle of the day and it came out with hot whites, great shots none the less but the sun hitting the snow is so white its hard to not have blown out whites. RED is no better than FILM with exposure latitude and to be honest I thought I'd end up with the same problem, if not worse.
I took the plunge and said to everyone, Lets go for it and shoot this thing on RED.

What we came back with was amazing, We had detail everywhere, So much so the we even crushed the finished grade a little bit to give it a bit of grit and extra contrast and still the whites and blacks hung in there.

The cameras did wig out when we were at 12,000 feet doing hand held aerial shots of the stunty jumping out of the heli. The hard drives were locking up momentarily at -20 degrees c , when we got to 0 c degrees all was okay again. Other than that the cameras worked flawlessly.

Once again what amazed me most was the detail in the snow and the blacks the actor was wearing. In our final 2k master you can literally see the actual snow crystals on the ground.
I went back to and old ad we shot on 35mm a couple of years ago and there was NO detail in the snow at all. Same conditions.

With the MX chip coming out, wow! seriously, like do we need it! yes...... we do.

Have a nice day all.

PS. Please excuse this quality of this small compressed H264 quicktime movie, detail is not there compared to the final master.
Id like to post the 4gig 2k version to show you all the amazing detail, but the download time would be ridiculous.

enjoy

WOW! Some incredible footage Mark!

Very high DR scenes. It looks like your exposure was really well placed to hold the white detail. I like the grade - although there were some shots where the contrast jumped a bit from the nice crushed looked, to slightly low con.

Looks like a very challenging shoot!

Nicely done.

Haha!! What a sweet commercial. Totally over the top and awesome. I can't believe you guys did the Vertical Limit "jump across a cliff with the climbing axe" bit. If you've ever watched Vertical Limit, it's one of the best popcorn flicks of the 00's. Anyway, loved the spot. I agree that it's a great example of the DR you can get on a Red when you're actually doing things right.

Nice shots - would be great to learn more on how you made the commercial.

Well, I started asking questions on the other thread so here goes again :).

What tools did you use to control the available light ? Did you also lit up some of the shots ?

Hi Mike,

To control available light all we used nothing other than a N1.2 & N9.
I wanted to shoot everything at 2.8.

No lights were use at all in this shoot.

Heres a funny one, We used only a 18 to 50 RED lens for the whole shoot.
Don't ask me why, it just ended up on the camera and I used it.
So under rated that little thing is.

Great stuff... love to get some of that footage (R3Ds) for an upcoming RED Reel... what say you?

Jim

Lens used? f-stops used? Any ND? Which REDCODE?

Graeme

I'm quite familiar with this cigarette commercial, however I only seen this on 30sec version. I didn't know it was shot on Red.

Congratulations ! very stunning !

Which firmware build did you use?
No problems with IR pollution? No IR filter used.
