I just got my MicroMattebox from EVS and its starting to grow on me. Seems to me from the design of the mattebox its geared more towards Nikon or Canon lenses. I put my RED 18-50mm lens on and at 18mm the mattebox is swallowing the lens. The edge of the lens is right up to the filter trays and that's the only way I can get the mattebox to disappear from the 4.5K area. Also the donuts that come with the mattebox are too small for the Red 18-50mm. Looks like I'll be making my own.

It looks like it's a pretty good deal for the $$. As long as it's fuctional and does the job.....

It looks like you've got the side wings attached improperly, in that first photo at least. There is a little slot in the hinge that they fit into that allows them to fit flush up against it. Just for reference, not trying to be rude or anything.

Also, have you tried removing the matte that comes with the mattebox to see if it gives you a little more FOV without vignetting on the 18-50?

Yeah, plug the side wings into the hinge slots and then tightened them up. To use the Red 18-50mm, make sure to remove the lens connector from the mattebox(remove the screws), which will give you a 155mm opening instead of 144mm.

Parisrem, thanks man...I feel like a total boner now for not figuring that one out. I'll also check out that matte in there to see if that solves the problem.

Dane, the filter stages seem to be cool. EVS was out of the ND's that I wanted so I haven't got a chance to play with them that much. They are built well and move nicely.

I attached the wings the same way because I tried first to get them in the slot and the wings wouldn't fit. After working off some of the finish, the wings fit like a charm, but that was after I took photos of the rig and posted them. Needless to say, Brian picked up on that quickly.

I do not mind product placement, or being proud of your work, but there is a bit too much, too big Redrockmicro all over the Mattebox.

Thank god for black camera tape ;)

Would you tape over a huge "ARRI" logo? You're just prejudiced. The fact is that the RedRockMicro mattebox is an excellent product, but the snob in some of us suffers from "but it's not an Arri" complex, and still regard RedRock gear as children of a lesser god.

I know what your saying Jaadgy. I too was trying to pick apart the Redrock when I first got it. But now that I've got it dialed in I really like this mattebox and I like the four grand I saved by not going with Arri.

I don't know why it happens all too often on Reduser that the moment someone makes a critical comment, someone else has to start a counter attack.

My comment has nothing to do with Redrock the company and everything with me liking my camerapackage to look uncluttered. Of course I'll buy the rr mattebox, and I'll use the black knobs. I don't feel snobbish about rr, I just don't want my camera to shout names.

I would do the same with an Arri or Chrosziel mattebox, except that they don't put a huge logo - or a small one for that matter - on their top eyebrow.

Let's not get emotional, its just a mattebox.

Nice.. thanks for the heads up. I'm likely to go the Canon/Nikon way so this is very helpful info!

Sarah, I kind of retract my earlier statement about the RR mattebox being more for Canon/Nikon lenses. It just took a little getting use to after using an MB20 for a week. It seems that this mattebox will work nice with both PL mount lenses and Canon/Nikon mount lenses.

My whole thing that I was bitching about earlier was that I could see the edge of the mattebox if I pulled the focus as close as it could get at 18mm. The edge of the mattebox sits just a little in the 4.5K area of the sensor at the distance I had it from the lens in the second set of pictures, with the focal distance of around 2ft?. I'm sure I could get it a little closer if I needed to but I would have to move the FF back a little because the adjustment on the mattebox was as far back as it gets.
